Jiawei Pingwei San (Modified Pingwei Decoction): This formula is used to treat spleen and stomach disharmony in men, women, and children, fullness and distension in the chest and hypochondrium, qi stagnation in the Triple Burner (San Jiao), poor appetite, as well as wind-cold causing unilateral hernia, mountain miasma, and acclimatization issues.
It can be prepared as a decoction, or made into pills or powders to treat various diseases, with modifications based on symptoms. (Lun) It is effective for daily use in saving people. (According to Bencao: To seek longevity, one may look for "mountain spirits," which refers to Cangzhu.)
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1 liang, stir-fried). Sweet in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Benefits the spleen and removes dampness. Like Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), it tonifies the middle jiao, but its ability to leach out dampness is inferior to Baizhu; however, its functions of inducing sweating, driving out dampness, resolving depression, and widening the middle are superior to Baizhu. The variety from Maoshan is best. Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 7 qian). Bitter in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Widens the middle and regulates qi. Retaining the white pith tonifies the stomach and harmonizes the middle; removing the white pith resolves phlegm and drains qi. Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 6 qian, stir-fried with fresh ginger juice). Bitter and sweet in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Bitterness directs qi downward, removing excess fullness and eliminating abdominal distension; warmth benefits qi, removes damp-fullness, dissipates nodules, and harmonizes the middle. Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 4 qian). Use sparingly for abdominal distension; contraindicated for swelling. Raw form acts on the extremities to drain fire; honey-roasted form strengthens the spleen and stomach and harmonizes the middle, detoxifying effectively. It cooperates with other herbs without conflict due to its sweetness that relieves urgency, hence the title "Guolao" (State Elder). Fresh ginger (3 slices), Jujube (1 piece), decocted in water; or made into coarse powder, take 5 qian per dose.
1. For spleen-stomach disharmony, vomiting, anorexia, discomfort in the heart and diaphragm, or chest/hypochondriac distension, add Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Sharen (Amomi Fructus).
2. For food stagnation damaging the spleen causing persistent diarrhea, add Siling San (Four-Ling Powder), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus). In summer, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Xiangru (Elsholtziae Herba); in winter, add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma). For abdominal pain, add Ganjiang, Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix).
3. For dysentery with abdominal pain, first promote bowel movement, then use this formula plus Siling San, Huanglian, Binglang (Arecae Semen), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Muxiang. For chronic dysentery, remove Siling San and Ginger, use Yucha (Pre-rain Tea) as a guide. If ineffective and abdominal pain persists, remove Siling San, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shaoyao, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried), Huanglian (ginger-juice fried), Zhike (bran-fried), Binglang, Muxiang.
4. For chronic dysentery not stopping, add this formula plus Sukeshell (Cornu Corni Fructus? Note: Text says 粟壳 likely Poppy Capsule Sangpiao or similar contextually, but literally millet shell - assuming Opium Poppy Capsule contextually for chronic dysentery though rare in modern TCM, sticking to text: Sukeshell/Wheat Shell?), Wumei (Mume Fructus), Huanglian, Danggui, Shaoyao, Muxiang. For tenesmus not relieved, the method involves moving blood and regulating qi.
5. For emotional stagnation and anorexia, add Xiangfu, Sharen, Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, fried), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Zhike, Zisuzi (Perillae Fructus), Luobozǐ (Raphani Semen), Huanglian.
6. For external wind-cold, add Zisu (Perillae Folium), Gange (Puerariae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (Ginger as guide). To induce sweating, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (Ginger and Scallion White as guide).
7. For unilateral hernia descent, aversion to cold and fever, muscle spasms, add Zisu, Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Chuanliannou (Toosendan Fructus), Banxia (5 stalks of Scallion White, decocted in hot wine. Sweating indicates cure; if ineffective, take two more doses.)
8. For epidemic diseases, add Zisu, Qianghuo, Chuanxiong, Baizhi, Douchi (Sojae Semens Praeparatum) a handful. For constipation, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas). Also applicable for Datozheng (Big Head Plague).
9. For summer heat epidemics, remove Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas) and Dahuang from the previous formula, add Xiangru (Douchi as guide).
10. For wind-cold transforming into malaria, add Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Zisu, Gange. Morning onset belongs to Qi deficiency, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu. Afternoon onset belongs to Yin deficiency, add Danggui, Chuanxiong. For chronic cases, combine this formula with Xiao Chaihu Tang plus Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (Binglang, Wumei as guide).
11. For swelling and Gu-zhang (abdominal distension with fluid accumulation), remove Gancao from this formula, add Siling San, Zhike, Binglang, Baijiezi (Brassicae Semimum), Sugeng (Perillae Caulis), Muxiang. For rapid breathing, add Sangbipi (Mori Cortex), Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen), Zisu.
12. For edema, follow the previous formula adding Luobozǐ, Jieyancao, Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba) (Ginger peel as guide). Swelling above the waist should be treated by inducing sweating (Zisu, Qianghuo). Swelling below the waist should be treated by removing dampness (Ganjiang, Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus)).
13. For wind-swelling with fever, induce sweating using Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Zisu, Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) (Ginger and Scallion as guide).
14. For vomiting and anorexia, add Erchen Tang, Baudoukou (Amomi Fructus), Sharen, Pipaye (Loquat Leaf).
15. For Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome), follow the previous formula removing Pipaye, Sharen, Baomidou, adding Huoxiang, Mugua (Salt as guide). Summer: add Gange, Xiangru, Huanglian. Winter: add Ganjiang, Guigui (Cinnamomi Cortex).
16. For vomiting with cold limbs, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed), Ganjiang (processed, each 1 qian. Severe cases 1.5 qian). Chronic diarrhea and dysentery also respond to the previous formula.
17. For lower body damp-swelling and foot weakness, add Mugua, Zisu, Yiren (Coicis Semen), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos). For Hongkong foot (Tinea pedis) or flowing abscesses, or cold qi condensation causing unbearable knee pain and day/night crying, add Fuzi and Ganjiang to this formula, externally apply Yulong Gao (Jade Dragon Ointment).
18. In winter, for cold invading Yin meridians causing abdominal pain, add Lizhong Tang (Middle-Warming Decoction), remove Renshen.
19. For Jue-ni abdominal pain, add Lizhong Tang, add Wumei 5 fen.
20. For pain caused by parasites where other drugs fail, add Kulianpi (Meliae Cortex), Binglang, Ganjiang, Shijunzi (Quisqualis Semen) (each 1 qian except Kulianpi 3 qian), decoct in water (add 1 liang honey).
21. To treat all Pi-kuai (masses) and Ji-ju (accumulations) knotting in the heart and abdomen, use this formula with less Gancao, add Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Pengzhu (Curcumae Rhizoma) (both vinegar-fried), Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Yuanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma) (both fried), Qingpi, Luobozǐ (fried), Qizha (Laquer residue, fried until smoke ceases), equal parts. Reduce Muxiang by half, double Xiangfu (vinegar-fried). Make pills with wine paste, take with plain boiled water.
22. Pingwei San powder mixed with Shenqu paste as pills treats all pediatric conditions; using guides according to symptoms is very effective.
23. Pingwei San powder treats various swellings, sores, and carbuncles; mix with scallion decoction and honey for topical application, also effective.
