The meridians of the Kidney channel connect to the Lung and are tied to the root of the tongue (Shéběn), circulating Qi and Blood, connecting Yin and Yang, and running internally to warm the Marrow. If congenital essence is insufficient, Kidney Water fails to ascend to nourish Heart Yang and unblock Lung Qi. The Classics state: "The Lung governs sound, and the Heart governs speech." The tongue is the sprout of the Heart; when the Heart and Lung are disharmonious, causing stiffness at the root of the tongue, one cannot produce speech. Treatment should focus on nourishing the Kidney, benefiting the Lung, and draining Heart Fire, so that Water ascends and Fire descends, Yin and Yang become harmonious and smooth, and speech naturally becomes clear.
Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) is indicated for delayed speech; this formula is the primary treatment.
Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu flesh), Poria (Fuling), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Danshen), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu), Asparagi Radix (Tianmendong), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong).
Grind these in equal proportions into powder. Mash Tianmendong and Maidong, mix with honey to form pills, and coat with 3 qian of Cinnabar (Zhusha). Take each dose with Decoction of Juncus Effusus (Dengxincao), taken two or three times daily.
(Attachment: Spasm of Hands and Feet)
The Kidney governs bones, and the Liver governs sinews. Bones become firm and strong when nourished by marrow; sinews flow smoothly when nourished by blood. Children with weak legs and delayed walking also suffer from insufficient congenital essence. It is advisable to use herbs that nourish Kidney Water, benefit Liver Qi, nourish blood, and tonify the Spleen. Why worry about inability to walk? Alternate taking Qipi Wan (Spleen-Initiating Pill) and Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill).
Hugu Wan (Tiger Bone Pill) treats weak legs and delayed walking.
Tibia Corvi Tigridis (Hujinggu), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren), Poria (Baifuling), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) (each 2 qian), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guangui) (2 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (4 qian).
Grind into powder, form pills with honey, and take with Decoction of Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua).
Lingyangjiao Wan (Antelope Horn Pill) treats the same condition as above.
Antelocera (Lingyangjiao, sliced), Tibia Corvi Tigridis (Hujinggu, roasted with butter), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren, stir-fried), Poria (Baifuling), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Coicis Semen (Yiyiren) (each 5 qian), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guangui) (3 qian).
Grind into powder, form pills with honey, and take with Salt Solution (Yantang).
Shenfang for Hongkong Foot (Gout/Charcot Joint): Cold invading the feet and knees causes spasm and inability to extend, with unbearable pain.
Nodes of Phyllostachys Bamboo (Shanjiejie) (1 sheng), Leaves of Citrus reticulata (Juye) (1 sheng; if leaves are unavailable, bark may be used), Arecae Semen (Binglang) (7 qian).
Decoct in 3 sheng of Urine of a Healthy Child (Tongbian) until reduced by half. Take frequently in warm doses.
Haitongpi San (Pepperbark Powder) treats foot spasm and inability to extend. The Classics state: "Those who bend but cannot straighten have disease in the sinews; those who straighten but cannot bend have disease in the bones." All result from cold binding the sinews, causing spasm and inability to extend. Medications should be warming, primarily focusing on dispersing cold qi.
Pepperbark (Haitongpi), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi) (each 5 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu), Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi) (each 1 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) (3 qian).
