A woman, aged thirty-two, suffered from severe alternating chills and fever (Da Fa Han Re), phlegm accumulation in the chest and diaphragm, and diarrhea. She was treated with Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) augmented with Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), and Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine). One dose stopped the symptoms. Later, due to anger, she experienced recurrent morning fever, hemoptysis (vomiting blood) of about one cup, thirst, profuse sweating, and a very rapid pulse (Shu Mai). She was prescribed Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Chai Hu, Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Jiu Qin, Bai Zhu, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Wu Mei (Mume Fructus), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), and Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), decocted in water and taken orally. With this regimen for regulation, the rapid pulse gradually subsided; only the left pulse remained wiry (Xian Mai). The chills and fever had ceased, and the phlegm sound in the throat had settled. Subsequently, due to improper convalescence, she suffered from pain in both hypochondria, excessive phlegm, and difficult expectoration. Her pulse was not as rapid as before. She was given Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen), 1.5 qian; Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus) and Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen), each 1 qian; Luo Bo Zi (Raphani Semen), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Hua Shi (Talcum), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), and Shan Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), each 0.7 fen; Qing Pi, Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), each 0.4 fen. These were decocted and taken. The bleeding stopped completely, and the cough and fever resolved after rest and sleep.
Cheng Shi, the wife of my younger brother's cousin, suffered from right hypochondriac pain preventing sleep and pain in the back corresponding to the heart area. She experienced afternoon tidal fever (Chao Re), a sensation of obstruction and stuffiness in the chest and diaphragm, blood-tinged sputum, and constipation. Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) was processed by mixing it evenly with Jiu Cai Zhi (Allii Tuberosi Juice), Luo Bo Zhi (Raphani Juice), and Zhu Gen Zhi (Boehmeriae Radix Juice), then moistening and stir-frying until dry. This process of moistening and frying was repeated three times until the color turned black. The dosage was 3 qian of this processed Da Huang, combined with Gua Lou Ren (2 qian), Bei Mu, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shan Zhi Zi, and Mu Dan Pi (each 1 qian), Qing Pi, Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), and Chuan Shan Jia (Manis Squama) (each 0.6 fen), and Gan Cao (0.3 fen). It was decocted in water and drunk. After three doses, she recovered completely, and the condition never recurred.
Huang Huaixu suffered from coughing, vomiting, loss of appetite (not knowing hunger), irregular qi rebellion, inability to lie supine, and inability to place his left hypochondrium on the bed. He had previously experienced hemoptysis and had recently suffered from food stagnation (Shang Shi). Initially, Bao He Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill) by Zhu Danxi was administered. Subsequently, he was treated with Gu Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Bai Zhu, Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Ban Xia Qu (Pinelliae Fermentatum), Gan Cao, Luo Bo Zi, Fu Ling (Poria), Xing Ren, and Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex). He recovered through proper nourishment and care.
A clan sister, nearly sixty years old, suffered from cough, thirst, and frequent expulsion of roundworms (Tu Hui Chong). She was prescribed Qian Hu, Zhi Mu, Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Bai Shao Yao, Dang Gui, Gan Cao, Chen Pi, Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Wu Mei, and Sang Bai Pi, decocted and taken orally. All symptoms ceased. Half a year later, she developed redness, swelling, and pain in the popliteal fossa (knee bend) and constipation. She was treated with Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Dang Gui, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), Wei Ling Xian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Cang Er Zi (Xanthii Fructus), Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen). Four doses resulted in complete recovery.
