The wife of my clan nephew Sun Wuzhongshan, Ye Shi, was thirty years old. Her body, face, and four limbs were edematous, which gradually extended to the abdomen, causing severe abdominal distension that was indescribable. Her eyelids were swollen without wrinkles, her dietary intake decreased significantly, and urination was difficult. This is Qi stagnation leading to water swelling (edema due to Qi stagnation). After taking Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel), Fu Ling Pi (Poria Peel), Jiang Huang (Turmeric Rhizome), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Mu Xiang (Costus Root), Wu Yao (Linderae Radix), and Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium) for four doses, her eyes could open, and her diet slightly improved. However, she became edematous again due to food injury (damage from improper diet). I then changed to using Qi Shang Wan (Seven Injuries Pill) for regulation until she fully recovered.
My clan nephew Sun Wuzhongli enjoyed drinking and excessive sexual activity, suffering from hematuria with dysuria (blood in urine accompanied by pain). I prescribed Hua Shi (Talcum), Gan Cao Shao (Tip of Licorice Root), Hai Jin Sha (Lygodii Spora), Hu Po (Amber), Shan Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), and Mao Gen Cao (Imperatae Rhizoma), decocted into a paste and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Each time, taken on an empty stomach and before meals with Deng Xin Tang (Juncus Decoction), three qian per dose. She was cured before finishing one dose. Five years later, due to late conception of her son, she took too many herbs tonifying the lower Yuan Qi (Original Qi), causing the hematuria to recur. The pain in urination was extreme; she could not stand to void but had to squat like a woman urinating to pass urine, expelling large blood clots, about one or two bowls each time. This lasted for half a month. All agents for promoting diuresis and clearing heat were tried without success. The pulse was flooding and rapid. I prescribed Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopteri Dung), Pu Huang (Typhae Pollen), and Gan Cao Shao, each 2 qian, along with Xiao Ji (Cirsii Herba) and Long Ya Cao (Agrimoniae Herba), each 3 qian, decocted in water and taken on an empty stomach. After two doses, the pain halved, but bleeding persisted. I changed to Qu Mai (Diantherae Herba), Shan Zhi Zi, and Gan Cao, each 2 qian, Mao Gen, Du Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), and Che Qian Cao (Plantaginis Herba with leaves), each 3 qian, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), and Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), each 1 qian. After four doses, the pain completely subsided, and bleeding stopped, though urination remained incomplete. The six pulses became harmonious and moderate, unlike before. Later, she was regulated with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Qing Hao, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao, Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Huang Bo, and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) to achieve complete recovery.
Your respected wife, the daughter of Shi Feng Gong, Prefect of Chenzhou, suffered from hematemesis (spitting blood) and fever. Her menstruation occurred every twenty days or twice a month. Leukorrhea was profuse. There was fullness and distension in the chest and diaphragm. The pulse was flooding and rapid. I prescribed Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang, Shan Zhi Zi, Bai Shao Yao, Xiao Ji, and Lu Jiao Jiao (Colla Cornu Cervi), decocted in water. Just before taking the medicine, one cup of Tong Bian (Child's Urine) was added. After twenty doses, she recovered.
