The daughter of Mr. Liangqing presented with redness and swelling of the right eye, accompanied by a sensation of fullness in the eye, which was required for her to open it; when hungry, she could not open her eyes. This is a case of Gan accumulation (nutritional deficiency syndrome) with deficiency-cold. Prescribed: Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao) 2 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) and Speranskiae Semen (Gujingcao) each 1 qian, Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) 1.5 qian, decocted and taken orally. The condition stabilized after four doses.
Shaozhu, my nephew, a university student, suffered from redness and swelling of the eyes. Yu Yungu administered bitter-cold formulas intended for treating epidemic febrile diseases (Shi Ji). Consequently, the eye swelling worsened, and pain increased in both Taiyang regions (temples). Adding Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) to the previous prescription failed to reduce the eye swelling or headache; instead, it caused generalized abdominal distension and stuffiness, leading to loss of sleep and appetite. Upon pulse diagnosis, the pulse was wiry, large, yet forceless. I prescribed Vitex Fruit (Manjingzi), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), and young tea leaves. Pain ceased after one dose, swelling subsided after two doses, and complete recovery occurred after four doses.
A female servant, following childbirth, had incomplete lochia discharge, abdominal pain, and contracted wind, resulting in cough, vomiting, dizziness, numbness in the legs with loss of pain and temperature sensation, and inability to turn over. She was given Tangqiuzi (likely a local herb name, possibly referring to a specific fruit or seed preparation), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Inulae Flos (Xuanjinhua), Lysichitii Rhizoma (Wuyao), Trogopterori Faeces (Wulingzhi), Poria (Fuling), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Landolphiae Caulis (Zelan Ye - note: standard term usually refers to Panax Notoginseng rootlet or similar, here likely Zelan Ye/Leonurus Carpus Herba leaf contextually but kept as literal translation for accuracy to source), Corydalis Rhizoma (Yanhusuo), added with brown sugar, decocted and taken orally. Abdominal pain stopped after the first administration; upon further dosing, lochia flowed normally, and cough and vomiting resolved.
The grandson of Master Cheng Haowu, a Shangshe official, developed a toxic sore behind the right ear, characterized by swelling and pain. Large vesicular sores appeared all over the body, accompanied by aversion to cold and fever. Prescribed: Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua), Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail (Danggui Wei), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Red Peony Root (Chishao), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiangcan), Arctii Fructus (Niu Bang Zi / Dalizi), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen). The condition resolved after two doses.
Madam Huayue, over fifty years old, had always experienced scanty urine. Currently, she experiences sharp pain at a point beside the right clavicle (salt spoon bone), worse at night, persisting for half a month. Previous treatments were ineffective, and the condition worsened with tossing and turning. Subsequently, swelling and pain spread to the right arm and joints, tendons became prominent, and red spots appeared on the muscles. Both hands showed slippery and rapid pulses, while the right Chi position was weak and soft. This was diagnosed as Bi syndrome (painful obstruction) caused by damp-heat injuring the tendons. The primary formula was Dongyuan’s Shujin Decoction, supplemented with Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Persicae Semen (Taoren), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Carthami Flos (Honghua), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duohuo), Polyporus (Zhuling), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian). After two doses, pain decreased and swelling subsided, with no recurrence thereafter.
