Mr. Yao Huizhai suffered from frequent nocturnal diarrhea, defecating three to five times each time, and up to ten or more times in severe cases. His lower abdomen often ached, and the pain persisted upon pressure. He had no thirst, and his urine was clear and long in volume. Despite half a year of treatment, he did not recover. Upon examination, I found his left Cun (cun position on the radial artery) pulse slippery, while the remaining five positions were soggy and weak. This indicated extreme deficiency of Yang Qi with cold within the deficiency. The treatment should focus on warming and tonifying the Lower Yuan (lower original qi), combined with lifting and raising. Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 1.5 qian, Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 qian each, Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) stir-fried with wine 3 qian, Da Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) 0.5 qian, Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1 qian, Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) and Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus) 1.5 qian each, Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 0.7 fen each. Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus). That night, the frequency of stool decreased by half. The next morning, although diarrhea continued, the excreta consisted entirely of white mucus resembling raw bean curd juice, and the lower abdominal pain ceased. On re-examination, the Right pulse showed slight improvement. After taking four doses consecutively, the illness was cured. The old gentleman joyfully said, "I have been ill for half a year, taking medicine every day without fail. Now, it is resolved in just four doses. How swift! It is because the disease was identified accurately and the prescription was precise. How could I not engrave this in my heart?"
Madam Yao Hua, the Grand Administrator of the Capital (Nanjing), was nearly seventy years old. Her right hand hurt so much that she could not raise it above her head. Other physicians treated her as having Gout (Tongfeng), but to no avail; instead, her thirst and irritability worsened. She then invited me to examine her. Her Right hand pulse was floating and slippery, while the Left was normal. I stated that this was caused by damp-phlegm generating heat, and heat generating wind. The treatment should involve resolving phlegm and clearing heat, combined with unblocking the meridians to achieve recovery. Prescription: Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with doubled dosage, plus added Wei Ling Xian (Syneilesis Radix), Jiu Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix). After four doses, the illness disappeared as if shed.
A servant suffered from fever, headache, thirst, abdominal pain, red urine, and diarrhea, unable to sleep day or night for six days. Upon examination, I said, "According to the pulse, after sweating, the pulse remains floating and rapid, and the heat has not subsided. This is an Epidemic Disease (Yi Zheng)." Prescription: Hua Shi (Talcum) 3 qian, Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), and Pian Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix slice) 1.5 qian each, Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) and Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 0.5 fen each. After one dose, he was able to sleep, the heat reduced by more than half, and the headache completely vanished. Only red urine, dizziness, and weakness in the legs and knees remained. This was due to Blood deficiency following the illness. Prescription: Si Wu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction) added with Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Jiu Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), and Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen). After taking it, he recovered stability.
