Wang Jingquan's wife suffered from phlegm-cough (cough with sputum), abdominal fullness, diarrhea with borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), tenesmus (urgent need to defecate with a feeling of incomplete evacuation), fever, and a sensation of fire blocking the breath from the mouth and nose. She was prescribed Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) supplemented with Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha), Malt (Maiya), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), Kochia Herb (Qinjiao), Artemisia Annua Herb (Qinghao), White Peony Root (Baishao), and Chinese Yam Rhizome (Yizhiren), taken concurrently with Xianglian Wan (Fragrant Coptis Pill). After two doses, her qi flow became smooth, cough decreased, and stool solidified, though nasal congestion persisted. Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) was added to the previous formula, and Baishao was reduced, leading to recovery.
Wen Nanxi's wife usually suffered from constipation, flushed face, loss of appetite, and occasional dizziness. Her pulse at the right Guan and Chi positions was slippery, large, and forceful, indicating Phlegm-Fire Syndrome (a condition where phlegm and fire pathogenic factors combine). Trichosanthes Root (Gualou) 4 qian was used as the sovereign drug, Polytropis Talcum (Huashi) 3 qian, Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi) 2 qian, and Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) 1.5 qian as minister drugs, while Radish Seed (Luobozhi) and Turmeric Rhizome (Jianghuang) each 1 qian were used as assistant drugs. She recovered after two prescriptions. She was also advised that if constipation recurred, she should take Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Sinensis and Scutellaria Barrelieri Pill) with one qian of Cow Gallbladder Phlegm (Niudannanxing) for immediate effect.
The second daughters of Chen Chunye, a Xiaolian degree holder, suffered from Dingxi Ganli (a type of chronic malnutrition with dysentery in children), presenting with edema of the four limbs. Taking Budai Wan (Cloth Bag Pill) together with Da'an Wan (Great Peace Pill) caused severe diarrhea. The prescription was changed to Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) added with Alisma Rhizome (Zexie), Shanzha, and Maiya, but diarrhea continued. Her spirit and qi were severely weakened; she could not eat even a grain of rice, urination was difficult, and she still had three to five bowel movements daily without clearing the stagnation. The formula was changed to Shenling Baizhu San added with Myristica Seed (Rouguo). Diarrhea slightly stopped, and she could drink a bowl of porridge. In the afternoon, after eating several red dates, phlegm suddenly arose late at night, creating a critical situation. Suhe Wan (Styrax Pill) was urgently administered, resulting in recovery. Subsequently, Shenling Baizhu San added with Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu), Agastache Herb (Huoxiang), Prepared Ginger (Paojiang), and Rouguo was used for conditioning until full recovery.
Pan Jingzhai's daughter-in-law originally had amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and was treated with An Tai (fetus-stabilizing) agents by other physicians. Seven months later, menstruation suddenly started heavily, expelling blood clots and membranes as large as a hand, amounting to one or two buckets. She suffered from severe fainting, confusion, fatigue, and exhaustion. I was consulted. Her pulse at the right Guan position was surging and slippery, left Cun was surging and rapid, and both Chi positions were surging and large. At midnight, she exhibited teeth grinding, delirious speech, hot palms, trismus (lockjaw), cold hands and feet intermittently, chest distension and discomfort, and a bluish complexion. Initially, all physicians considered it incurable. I said: "Do not fear. This is turbid phlegm stagnating in the Blood Sea (Chong Mai/Uterus), exacerbated by the mistaken use of fetus-stabilizing agents. Due to excessive blood loss, the soul lacks a foundation; due to phlegm obstructing the heart orifices, there is mental confusion and disordered speech. Urgently regulate qi, resolve phlegm, calm the spirit, and nourish blood, and she will survive." I prescribed Wendan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) added with Shichangpu, Jiuhuangqin (Scutellaria Root processed with wine), Gastrodia Tuber (Tianma), Sour Jujube Seed (Suanzaoren), and Salvia Root (Danshen). By the Zi-Chou hours (11 PM - 3 AM) that night, her teeth grinding and delirium were halved. The next day, the same medicine was given, adding Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru) 5 qian per dose. Before sleep, several pills of Heihu Dan (Black Tiger Pill) were administered. All symptoms disappeared, and she recovered. Jingzhai asked: "Thanks to your skill, the illness is cured, but why does it flare up at midnight?" I replied: "This is because there is phlegm-heat in the Pericardium Collateral and Gallbladder Meridian, causing flare-ups at these specific times. Treating only these two meridians eliminates the phlegm, thereby calming the spirit and soul." Jingzhai said: "Excellent."
