If the foundation of the body is solid, the Eight Winds (pathogenic winds from eight directions) cannot find a gap to invade. If the root is dense and secure, how can the Five Zang Organs be affected by pathogens? Therefore, life is given by Heaven (innate constitution), but it is humans who summon disease through their actions. Although life is endowed by Heaven, if one does not actively invite pathogens, nothing can harm them. If harm occurs repeatedly, it is because one has summoned excessive pathogens. The *Suwen: Shengqi Tongtian Lun* states: "Wind is the beginning of all diseases." If one remains pure and tranquil, the flesh and pores will close and resist; even with great wind and severe toxins, they cannot cause harm. The *Suwen: Yinyang Yingxiang Dalun* states: "When pathogenic wind arrives, it is swift as wind and rain." Thus, those skilled in treatment treat at the level of the skin and hair. Since the flesh and pores are solid and the skin and hair are dense, where would the cause of harm come from? Now, having been injured by an object, there must be significant gaps between the skin/hair and the flesh/pores. At the time of injury, could there not be internal movement of the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, Fright), becoming the origin of weakened Wei Qi (Defensive Qi)? Both factors summon pathogens; how could Wind not enter?
Therefore, if the upper, lower, left, or right parts of the eye are injured by an object, the corresponding parts of the eye will all become diseased. One should generally use Chufeng Yisun Tang (Remove Wind and Benefit Deficiency Decoction) as the main formula. If injured on the brow bone, the disease manifests downward from the Eye System (connection between the eye and the brain), because there is a gap in the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), using Chufeng Yisun Tang as the main formula. If injured on the cheekbone area, the disease manifests upward from the orbital rim; if injured in the ear, the disease enters inward from the lateral canthus, because there is a gap in the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian. Add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), using Chufeng Yisun Tang as the main formula. If injured at the forehead junction with the vertex, the upper angle of the ear, and the brain, the disease manifests outward from the interior, because there is a gap in the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), using Chufeng Yisun Tang as the main formula. If injured behind the ear, at the ear angle, or in front of the ear, the disease manifests obliquely downward from the Kerenren acupoint (Tinggong, SI19); if injured on the forehead, the disease enters inward from the lateral canthus, because there is a gap in the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. Add Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), using Chufeng Yisun Tang as the main formula. If injured at the temporal angle, before and after the ear, and behind the lateral canthus, the disease enters inward from the lateral canthus, because there is a gap in the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Add Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), using Chufeng Yisun Tang as the main formula. If injured at the frontal angle and the vertex, the disease manifests downward from the Eye System, because there is a gap in the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), using Chufeng Yisun Tang as the main formula. For cases with heat signs, additionally add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and concurrently take Jiadi Dihuang Wan (Modified Rehmannia Pill). For severe injuries, one must temporarily double the dosage of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to purge the failing blood. The *Suwen: Liujie Zangxiang Lun* states: "The Liver receives blood and thus enables vision." This refers to herbs that nourish, tonify, and restore blood. This treats the root cause. There are also cases where sudden impact causes the Shen Shui (Eye Fluid/Aqueous Humor) to scatter, which cannot be treated further; this is recorded here for awareness.
Chufeng Yisun Tang (For treating eye injuries caused by objects):
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 0.7 fen).
Decoct these herbs in two zhong of clear water until reduced to 0.8 zhong. Strain and drink while very hot.
In the above formula, Shudihuang tonifies the Kidney as the Sovereign herb. The Black Pupil (cornea) is the child of the Kidney; deficiency is treated by tonifying the mother. Danggui tonifies Blood, as the eyes are nourished by Blood; injury leads to Blood pathology. Baishao tonifies both Blood and Qi, as Blood pathology affects Qi, serving as the Minister herb. Chuanxiong treats headache due to Blood deficiency; Gaoben unites the Blood and expels Head Wind, serving as the Assistant herb. Qianhu and Fangfeng treat Wind pathogens, preventing stagnation, serving as the Envoy herb. It also treats conditions of excessive blood loss.
If injured on the brow bone, disease manifests downward from the Eye System due to a gap in the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian; add Huanglian to treat it. If injured on the cheekbone, disease manifests upward from the orbital rim; if injured in the ear, disease enters inward from the lateral canthus due to a gap in the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian; add Chaihu to treat it. If injured at the forehead junction with the vertex, upper ear angle, and brain, disease manifests outward from the interior due to a gap in the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian; add Cangzhu to treat it. If injured behind the ear, at the ear angle, and in front of the ear, disease manifests obliquely downward from Kerenren; if injured on the cheek, disease enters inward from the lateral canthus due to a gap in the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; add Longdancao to treat it. If injured at the frontal angle and vertex, disease manifests downward from the Eye System due to a gap in the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian; add Wuweizi. For excessive discharge (eye boogers/tears), astringency, redness, and swelling, add Huangqin to treat it. For severe injuries, temporarily double the dosage of Dahuang to purge the failing blood.
