The five Zang organs of the human body are like the Five Sacred Mountains (Wuyue) of heaven and earth. The six Fu organs are like the Four Great Rivers (Sidu) of heaven and earth. The Eight Extraordinary Vessels (Qijing) are like other rivers and streams beyond the four great rivers. When pathogenic factors invade the extraordinary vessels, they cannot be treated according to the methods for the twelve regular meridians. Beyond the twelve regular meridians, there are specific methods for treating diseases of the extraordinary vessels. *Suwen: Miao Ci Lun* states: "When pathogenic factors invade the Foot Yang Qiao Mai, it causes eye pain, starting from the inner canthus." Wang Bing, known as Qixuanzi, annotated: "Because this meridian originates at the foot, ascends to the head, and connects to the inner canthus, disease manifests as eye pain starting from the inner canthus." *Zhenjing* states: "The Yin Qiao Mai enters the nasal cavity, connects to the inner canthus, and merges with the Taiyang meridian; the Yang Qiao Mai ascends. Therefore, when the Yang Qiao Mai is invaded by pathogens, the inner canthus becomes red, generating red veins like threads. At the root of these threads, stasis flesh grows; from the stasis flesh, yellow-red lipid membranes emerge. These membranes horizontally invade the cornea (Heijing), gradually eroding the Shen Shui (aqueous humor). This is the sequence of pathology in Yang Qiao Mai diseases." If the outer canthus (Ruican) is also involved, it is because it merges with the Taiyang meridian. Diseases of the outer canthus are necessarily milder than those of the inner canthus, because the spread to branches is less, while the primary site of invasion bears more severity. Commonly called "Panning" (pterygium-like growth), this refers to such diseases. They are primarily treated with *Huanyin Jiuku Tang* (Return-Yin Rescue-Bitter Decoction), *Boyun Tuiyi Wan* (Cloud-Pushing Cataract-Dispelling Pill), *Zhizi Shengqi San* (Gardenia Victory-Wonder Powder), *Wanying Chanhua San* (Universal Cicada-Flower Powder), *Mozhang Lingguang Gao* (Obstacle-Grinding Spiritual-Light Ointment), *Xiaoyi Fuming Gao* (Cataract-Dissolving Vision-Recovering Ointment), or *Piaoxiao Huanglian Luganshi Paosan* (Saltpeter-Coptis-Lodolite Soaked Powder). When the disease is severe and medicines cannot reach the affected area, manual therapy is appropriate. First, wash with cold water, similar to the method for puncturing cataracts. With the left hand, press firmly to prevent movement. Slightly use the tip of a small eyebrow knife to scrape off the lipid tissue. Wash clean with cold water again, and continue administering the aforementioned herbal medicines. This is the method for treating pathogenic invasion of the extraordinary vessels. Thus, the origin of their meridian diseases is listed together.
**Boyun Tuiyi Wan** (Treats Yang Qiao Mai pathogenic invasion, where the inner canthus generates red thread-like veins, roots generate stasis flesh, stasis flesh generates yellow-red lipid membranes, membranes horizontally invade the cornea, gradually eroding the aqueous humor. The same applies to the outer canthus. Commonly named Panning.)
*Baijili* (Tribuli Fructus), *Chuan Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), *Chuanxiong* (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1.5 liang), *Chuanjiao* (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (7 qian), *Gan Juhua* (Dendranthema Flos), *Digupi* (Phellodendri Cortex), *Jingjie* (Schizonepetae Spica) (each 8 qian), *Muzei* (Equiseti Herba, nodes removed), *Mimenghua* (Myopsidis Flos), *Manjingzi* (Viticis Semen) (each 1 liang), *Shetui* (Bombyx Batryticatus, roasted), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 qian), *Tianhuafen* (Trichosanthis Radix) (6 qian), *Chu Tao Ren* (Pruni Persicae Semen), *Chantui* (Cryptotympanae Perga, heads and feet removed), *Huanglian* (Coptidis Rhizoma), *Su Bohe* (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (each 5 qian).
Grind all into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey. Each liang of powder makes eight pills. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly after meals and before sleep, swallow with clear tea.
The above formula was created for pathogenic invasion of the extraordinary vessels. *Nanjing Chapter 81* states: "The Yang Qiao Mai originates at the ankle, follows the lateral malleolus upward into Fengchi (GB20). Fengchi corresponds to Naohu (DU16). Therefore, *Chuanxiong* is used to treat wind entering the brain, and *Juhua* is used to treat wandering wind in the four limbs. One treats the upper part, one calms the lower part, serving as the Sovereign drug (*Jun*). *Manjingzi* eliminates pathogenic factors of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. *Chantui*, *Shetui*, *Muzei Cao*, and *Mimenghua* eliminate nebulae/cataracts, serving as Ministers (*Chen*). *Bohe Ye*, *Jingjie Sui*, and *Baijili* treat various winds to clear the upper region. *Chu Taoren* and *Digupi* promote urination to clear the lower region, serving as Assistants (*Zuo*). *Huanglian* clears heat in the Stomach, *Tianhuafen* clears heat in the Intestines, *Gancao* harmonizes all herbs, and *Chuanjiao Pi* benefits the five Zang organs and brightens the eyes. Wherever Qi pathology exists, Blood pathology also exists; therefore, *Danggui* is added to harmonize the Blood, serving as an Envoy (*Shi*)."
**Zhizi Shengqi San** (Treats all conditions of red veins invading the eyeball, pain and itching due to Wind-Heat, pterygium growing over the cornea, excessive discharge, tearing, sensitivity to light, fear of sun, difficulty opening eyes.)
*Baijili* (stir-fried), *Chantui*, *Gu Jingcao* (Caryopsidis Semen), *Gancao*, *Muzei Cao*, *Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix), *Caojueming* (Casuarinae Fructus), *Juhua*, *Shanzhizi* (Gardeniae Fructus), *Chuanxiong*, *Jingjie Sui*, *Qianghuo* (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), *Mimenghua*, *Fangfeng* (Saposhnikoviae Radix), *Manjingzi* (equal parts).
Grind all into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Mix with hot clear tea and take after meals and before sleep.
In the above formula, the salty-cold nature of *Chantui* and the salty-bitter-cold nature of *Caojueming* serve as the Sovereign drugs. Substances with thin flavors penetrate and unblock; unblocking refers to unblocking the meridians. The acrid-warm nature of *Chuanxiong* and *Jingjie Sui*, the bitter-acrid-warm nature of *Baijili* and *Gu Jingcao*, the bitter-sweet-ping nature of *Juhua*, and the sweet-acrid nature of *Fangfeng* serve as Ministers. Acrid aromas induce warmth/ascending; inducing warmth refers to raising Yang Qi. The bitter-sweet-warm nature of *Qianghuo*, the sweet-mild-cold nature of *Mimenghua*, the sweet-ping nature of *Gancao*, and the sweet-mild-cold nature of *Manjingzi* serve as Assistants. Thin aromas vent and release; venting refers to clearing and benefiting the joints. The sweet-mild-bitter nature of *Muzei*, and the mild-bitter-cold nature of *Shanzhizi* and *Huangqin* serve as Envoys. Dense flavors purge; purging refers to attacking excess stagnation.
**Mozhang Lingguang Gao** (Indications same as above)
*Luganshi* (Calamina), processed separately: place 1 liang of chopped *Huanglian* in water, heat *Luganshi* until red-hot, quench seven times (total 6 liang), *Huangdan* (Lithargyrum, water-ground, 3 liang), *Naosha* (Ammonium Chloride, ground separately), *Baixingding* (Streptopeliae Faeces, taken as powder), *Haipiaoxiao* (Sepiae Endoconcha, taken as powder), *Qingfen* (Calomelas, each 1 liang), *Chuan Huanglian* (Coptidis Rhizoma, chopped bean-sized, 1 liang, soaked in child's urine overnight, dried, and powdered), *Shexiang* (Moschus, ground separately), *Ruxiang* (Olibanum, each 5 qian), *Danggui Shen* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian, powdered), *Longnao* (Borneolum Syntheticum, a small amount).
First, take 10 liang of high-quality white beeswax honey. In a silver vessel or clay pot, boil five to seven times. Filter off the wax surface with clean paper. Excluding *Huangdan*, add the remaining herbs. Stir evenly with a willow branch. Then add *Huangdan* and stir again. Slowly stir over low fire until purple. Mix *Shexiang*, *Ruxiang*, *Qingfen*, and *Naosha* evenly, then incorporate into the above mixture. Stop stirring when it does not stick to hands. Quickly form pills the size of soap beans. Wrap in paper. Use one pill per application. Dissolve in fresh well water, add a little *Longnao*, and apply frequently to the nebula.
In the above formula, *Huanglian* removes pathogenic heat and primarily brightens the eyes, serving as the Sovereign drug. *Huangdan* removes toxicity and heat; *Luganshi* treats dampness and promotes drying/dispersal, serving as Ministers. *Danggui* harmonizes blood vessels; *Shexiang* and *Ruxiang* (aromatics) promote Qi circulation; *Qingfen* kills sores/toxins, serving as Assistants. *Naosha* dissolves obstructions; *Haipiaoxiao* grinds away nebulae; *Baixingding* eliminates fleshy growths; *Longnao* dissipates red veins and removes external obstructions, serving as Envoys.
**Xiaoyi Fuming Gao** (Indications same as above)
*Haipiaoxiao* (taken as powder, 3 qian), *Huangdan* (water-ground, 4 liang), *Hezi* (Terminalia Chebula Retusa, 8 fruits, de-seeded and powdered), *Baisha Mi* (White Beeswax Honey, 1 jin), *Qingyan* (Green Salt, ground separately, 1 liang).
First, boil the honey several times. Filter off the wax surface with clean paper. Then add *Huangdan*. Stir evenly with a stick. Immediately add the remaining herbs. Remove when turned purple.
*Longdan Cao* (Gentianae Radix, 2 liang), *Huanglian* (10 liang), *Xingren* (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 75 pieces, peeled and deseeded), *Muzei Cao* (1 liang), *Riren* (Prini Fructus, shelled and peeled, 5 qian).
Place all herbs in a porcelain vessel and soak in one dou (approx. 10 liters) of water. Soak for five days in spring/autumn, three days in summer, ten days in winter. Place in a pot and decoct with moderate heat until reduced to slightly less than half a sheng (approx. 0.5 liters). Filter out the dregs. Further concentrate via double-boiling to form an ointment. Then add the previously prepared ingredients and continue boiling/stirring until purple. Add 1 qian of *Longnao*. Apply a small amount topically. When dry, dissolve in clean water for use.
In the above formula, *Huanglian* serves as the Sovereign drug because it treats pathogenic heat. *Riren*, *Xingren*, and *Longdan Cao* serve as Ministers because they eliminate redness/pain, moisten dryness, and resolve heat-toxicity. *Huangdan*, *Qingyan*, *Longnao*, and *Baisha Mi* serve as Assistants because they absorb dampness/drain sores, benefit Kidney Qi, treat redness/swelling, and harmonize all herbs. *Hezi*, *Haipiaoxiao*, and *Muzei Cao* serve as Envoys because astringency keeps the medicine in place, facilitating the elimination of obstructions and grinding of nebulae.
