Yin and Yang take harmony as their foundation. Excess or deficiency gives rise to disease. "Ji" (Urgency/Tightness) refers to contraction that cannot be resolved; "Chi" (Laxity/Relaxation) refers to looseness that cannot be gathered. Contraction belongs to Yang, while looseness belongs to Yin. Inability to resolve or gather constitutes pathology.
The Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian corresponds to Xin Metal in the Heavenly Stems and governs the skin and hair of the entire body. The outer aspects of the upper and lower eyelids also belong to it. The Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian corresponds to Ding Fire, and the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian corresponds to Bing Fire. Since Bing and Ding both belong to Fire, they are exterior-interior pairs, dividing the upper and lower regions. The inner aspects of the upper and lower eyelids also belong to them. The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian corresponds to Yi Wood. Its meridian channel circulates along the inner aspect of the upper eyelid. As Wood is the "Son" of Fire (Wood generates Fire), it harmonizes with the Heart. If the Heart, Liver, and Small Intestine meridians are invaded by pathogenic factors, internal Yang-Fire becomes excessive. Consequently, the inner aspects of the upper and lower eyelids contract and remain unresolved.
Metal of the Lung is controlled by Fire; thus, the controlled party inevitably weakens. Weakness allows Yin Qi to move outward. Therefore, the outer aspects of the upper and lower eyelids become loose and fail to gather. Since the upper and lower eyelids exhibit inner urgency and outer laxity, the eyelashes turn inward and pierce the interior of the eye. Once the eyeball is pierced, it becomes deeply red and develops nebulae (corneal opacities). These nebulae result from damage to the eyeball. Thus, all eye diseases manifest: photophobia, gritty sensation, aversion to wind and sunlight, erosion, pain or itching, increased discharge, and tearing.
If medicinal clamps are applied to the outer side of the upper eyelid to make lax parts urgent and urgent parts lax, aiming to prevent harm from inverted eyelashes, this is not the correct treatment. It only resolves immediate distress but fails to cure the disease ultimately. Why? Because it does not examine the causes of excess and deficiency, nor does it eliminate the root cause of the disease. The treatment method should involve everting the inner eyelid outward and rapidly puncturing with a three-edged needle to bleed. Use the thumbnail of the left hand to guide the needle tip. Subsequently, treat primarily with Huangqi Fangfeng Yin (Astragalus and Saposhnikovia Decoction). Alternatively, use Wubi Manjingzi Tang (Peerless Vitex Decoction), Mingming Yiyin Wan (Cassia Seed Nourishing Yin Pill), or Juhua Mingming San (Chrysanthemum and Cassia Powder). Biyun San (Green Cloud Powder) administered nasally is also suitable for concurrent use. In this manner, urgency will naturally relax, and laxity will gradually tighten. Whether excess or deficiency, harmony will be restored. Do not employ clamp therapy; it only causes suffering. Wise individuals should scrutinize this.
Huangqi Fangfeng Yin (Treats tightness at the eye corners leading to inverted eyelashes and curled hairs, damaging the eyeball and causing nebulae, as well as redness and erosion of the upper and lower eyelids, difficulty opening due to soreness, and thick sticky discharge.)
Vitex Fruit (Manjingzi) and Scutellaria Root (Huangqin): 1.5 qian each.
Astragalus Root (Huangqi): Honey-processed.
Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng): 8 fen.
Asarum Root (Beixixin): 2 fen.
Licorice Root (Gancao): Roasted, 5 fen.
Kudzu Root (Gegen): 1 qian.
Crush the ingredients. Add two zhong of clear water, decoct until one zhong remains, strain, and drink while very hot.
In this formula, Vitex Fruit and Asarum serve as the Sovereign herbs to expel pathogens from the Hand-Taiyang and Hand-Shaoyin meridians. The Liver is the "Mother" of these two meridians (Wood generates Fire); calming the Son stabilizes the Mother. This applies the principle of "draining the Son when there is excess." Licorice and Kudzu serve as Minister herbs to treat weakness in the Foot-Taiyin and Foot-Yangming meridians. The Lung is the "Son" of these two meridals (Earth generates Metal); tonifying the Mother addresses the emptiness of the Son. This applies the principle of "tonifying the Mother when there is deficiency." Astragalus consolidates the skin and hair; Saposhnikovia disperses stagnant Qi; these serve as Assistant herbs. Scutellaria treats damp-heat and removes redness and swelling in the eyes; this serves as Envoy herb.
Wubi Manjingzi Tang (Treats the same symptoms as above)
Astragalus Root (Huangqi): 1.2 qian.
Coptis Rhizome (Chuanhuanglian): 7 fen.
Codonopsis Root (Renshen) and Licorice Root (Gancao): 1 qian each.
Bupleurum Root (Chaihu): 7 fen.
Vitex Fruit (Manjingzi), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), Kudzu Root (Gegen), and Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng): 5 fen each.
Asarum Leaf (Xixin Ye): 3 fen.
Crush the ingredients. Add two zhong of clear water, decoct until one zhong remains, strain, and take warm.
In this formula, due to Lung Qi deficiency, Astragalus and Codonopsis are used to consolidate them, serving as Sovereign herbs. If the Heart meridian is affected, Coptis expels it. If the Liver meridian is affected, Bupleurum expels it. If the Small Intestine meridian is affected, Vitex expels it; these serve as Minister herbs. Angelica Sinensis harmonizes blood; Kudzu releases the muscle layer; these serve as Assistant herbs. Saposhnikovia treats wind and disperses stagnation; Raw Licorice strongly clears heat and fire; Asarum unblocks the nine orifices. The leaves of Asarum are used to exploit their ascending properties; this serves as Envoy herb.
