[Diagram of the Functions of the Five Zang Organs and Their Correspondence to the Five Elements]
In spring, the "Xu" (Hissing) sound clarifies vision by regulating the Liver. At summer solstice, the "He" (Ah) sound naturally calms Heart Fire. In autumn, the "Si" (Sighing) sound moistens the Metal Lungs. In winter, the "Chui" (Blowing) sound ensures the peace of Kidney Water (Kan). The "Xi" (Giggling) sound eliminates irritability and heat from the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). Throughout the four seasons, long exhalation via the "Hu" (Purring) sound aids the Spleen in digesting food. One must avoid making audible sounds that reach the ears; its efficacy surpasses even that of the Shenbao Pill.
Heart He Sound: Hands crossed above the head (raise hands while exhaling "He", turn palms back while inhaling). Exhaling "He" unblocks the Heart, removing all excessive heat from the Heart system. This heat may attack the eyes, cause facial redness, sores on the tongue, or mouth ulcers. Thus, the Heart is the master of the five sense organs, issuing commands that coordinate them. Therefore, in ancient times, people were tranquil and void of desire, allowing True Qi to follow, spirit to remain inwardly guarded, and diseases to have no origin. This is because their will was calm with few desires, their hearts were at peace without fear, and their bodies labored without exhaustion. During autumn and winter, one should warm the Yongquan (KI 1) acupoint to prevent injury to the Heart Monarch. The *Su Shu* states: "Cold feet injure the Heart." Clarifying the mind leads to clear spirit, which causes Fire to descend; thus, Fire descends due to the clarity of the Spirit. The Heart connects with the tongue, which is the official organ of the Heart, the sprout of the Heart, the residence of the Spirit, and the sea of Blood. Therefore, when Blood is deficient, the Spirit becomes erratic and sleep is restless. In winter, a red face indicates being overcome by Water (Kidney), so excessive salt damages Heart Blood. During the 72 days of winter, reduce salt and increase bitter flavors to nourish the Heart.
Liver Xu Sound: Open the eyes wide. Exhaling "Xu" unblocks the Liver, removing all stagnant heat from the Liver system. The Gallbladder is born from the Liver; if Gallbladder Qi is unclear, it is due to accumulated heat in the Liver attacking the eyes. Perform thirty forceful "Xu" exhalations, alternating tonification and sedation, to brighten the eyes and prevent eye discharge. The eyes connect with the Liver, which is the residence of the Hun (Ethereal Soul). When sleeping at night with eyes closed, the Hun returns to its residence. The Liver is the official organ of the eyes. In autumn, a greenish face indicates being overcome by Metal (Lung), so excessive pungent flavors damage the Liver. During the 72 days of autumn, reduce pungent flavors and increase sour flavors to nourish Liver Qi.
Kidney Chui Sound: Embrace the knees flat. Exhaling "Chui" unblocks the Kidneys, removing all deficiency-heat from the Kidney system, such as dim vision or deafness. With proper tonification and sedation, Kidney Qi regulates itself. The Kidneys connect with the ears, which are the official organs of the Kidneys. Listening consumes Essence; one should not listen to licentious sounds. Perform thirty forceful "Chui" exhalations and rub the Kidney area (lower back) until warm. During the eighteen days of each season transition, a black face indicates being overcome by Wood (Liver), so excessive sweet flavors damage the Kidneys. Therefore, during the eighteen days of each季月 (seasonal transition month), reduce sweet flavors and increase salt to nourish Kidney Qi.
Lung Si Sound: Raise both hands. Exhaling "Si" unblocks the Lungs, removing all accumulated Qi from the Lung system, whether due to wind-cold cough, runny nose, nasal heat with sores, or severe nasal congestion. Alternating tonification and sedation allows Lung Qi to ascend and descend naturally. The Lungs are the canopy over the Heart, preferring clarity; thus, clear Lungs do not generate disease. The Lungs connect with the nose, which is the official organ of the Lungs, and the Lungs are the residence of the Po (Corporeal Soul). In summer, a pale face indicates being overcome by Fire (Heart). Bitter belongs to Fire, Lungs belong to Metal. During the 72 days of summer, reduce bitter flavors and increase pungent flavors to nourish Lung Qi.
Spleen Hu Sound: Pucker the mouth. Exhaling "Hu" unblocks the Spleen, removing all turbid Qi from the Spleen system. This addresses bad breath, sores on limbs, yellow complexion with Spleen accumulation, or indigestion from cold foods. Thus, the Spleen is the official of the granaries and participates in blood generation. If diet is irregular, blood is not generated; if limbs do not move, the Spleen becomes sluggish. Eating little at night prevents the Spleen from being inactive during sleep, avoiding food stagnation and disease. The Spleen is the official of the four seasons and the residence of the Yi (Intellect). Therefore, the Yi should not move recklessly, as this clouds the Hao Ran Zhi Qi (Noble Breath). In spring, a yellow face indicates being overcome by Earth (Spleen) imbalance or Wood overcoming Earth; during the 72 days of spring, reduce sour flavors and increase sweet flavors to nourish Spleen Qi.
Sanjiao Xi Sound: Lie down and giggle. Exhaling "Xi" unblocks the Gallbladder (Note: Text attributes Xi to Gallbladder here, though traditionally Sanjiao), removing all pathogenic heat from the Gallbladder. Lying down and giggling removes pathogenic heat from the whole body. With proper tonification and sedation, Gallbladder Qi clears, eyes do not produce discharge, and since the Gallbladder fears heat, one should eat less hot food throughout the four seasons to prevent upper Jiao accumulation and keep Gallbladder Qi fresh.
