Variations from rich and greasy food are caused by excessive richness of taste. Qi and blood are both abundant due to a robust constitution. Hyperactive Yang flares upward because Yin fails to restrain it. Pathogenic factors enter the meridians, and there is no internal defense. Consequently, changes occur, and heat arises from these changes.
Heat is Fire; the nature of Fire is to flare upward. The Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian belongs to Wood; Wood generates Fire. The Mother (Wood) nourishes the Child (Fire). When the Child (Fire) overcomes excessively, it counter-attacks the Mother (Wood), leading to pathological counter-restriction. Since the Liver opens into the eyes, when the Liver is restricted, the eyes also become diseased. Symptoms include excessive eye discharge, tightness and dryness, and red vessels traversing the eyeball. If accompanied by constipation of the Zang-Fu organs, it is a severe case, treated primarily with Shaoyao Qinggan San (Peony Decoction to Clear the Liver) or Tongqi Lizhong Wan (Pill to Unblock Qi and Benefit the Middle). If there is excessive eye discharge, tightness, dryness, and red vessels traversing the eyeball, but without constipation of the Zang-Fu organs, it is a mild case. For mild cases, reduce Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome) and Mangxiao (Mirabilite), treat primarily with Shaoyao Qinggan San (Peony Decoction to Clear the Liver) or Huanglian Tianhuafen Wan (Coptis and Trichosanthes Pill). If symptoms are slightly less severe, take Tongqi Lizhong Wan (Pill to Unblock Qi and Benefit the Middle). For ulceration of the eye sockets, take the above medicines internally, and externally apply Huanglian Luguanshi San (Coptis and Calamine Powder) to the ulcerated areas. Additionally, use Dianyan Chunxue Gao (Eye-Dropping Spring Snow Ointment) and Longnao Huanglian Gao (Borneol and Coptis Ointment) for eye application. Use Biyun San (Blue Cloud Powder) nasally to attack the exuberant heat. This is the method for treating exuberant heat counter-restriction. Do not use this if it is not a variation from rich and greasy food, if Qi and blood are not both abundant, if hyperactive Yang does not flare upward, and if pathogenic factors have not entered the meridians. Using this will damage the Stomach with cold-cooling herbs, causing the Stomach Qi to fail in ascending and descending, resulting in further harm. Physicians must understand this clearly. Alas, exercise caution.
Shaoyao Qinggan San (Peony Decoction to Clear the Liver): Treats excessive eye discharge, tightness and dryness, photophobia, red vessels traversing the eyeball, and constipation of the Zang-Fu organs.
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhen Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Huashi (Talcum) (each 3 qian); Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Su Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (each 2.5 qian); Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shanzhiren (Gardeniae Semen) (each 2 qian); Mangxiao (Mirabilite) (3.5 qian), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (4 qian).
Grind all into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with two zhong of water until one zhong remains, and take warm after meals.
The above formula was created to treat exuberant heat counter-restriction. It is used prudently for conditions where Wind-Heat is uncontrolled and heat is severe with constipation. As it consists of bitter-cold herbs that can damage the Stomach, Baizhu's sweet-warm nature and Gancao's sweet-neutral nature are used as Sovereign herbs to generate Stomach Qi. Next, Chuanxiong, Fangfeng, Jingjie, Jiegeng, and Qianghuo's acrid-warm nature serves as Minister herbs to ascend and clear. Shaoyao, Qianhu, and Chaihu's slightly bitter nature, along with Bohe, Shanzhi, and Huangqin's slightly bitter-cold nature, act as Assistant herbs to guide and attack. Finally, Zhimu, Huashi, and Shigao's bitter-cold nature, along with Dahuang and Mangxiao's greatly bitter-cold nature, serve as Envoy herbs to expel exuberant heat. For those without constipation, reduce Dahuang and Mangxiao. This is the treatment method of attacking against the reverse flow. Taking it hot is a contrary treatment method.
Tongqi Lizhong Wan (Pill to Unblock Qi and Benefit the Middle): Treats the same syndromes as above.
Ingredients: Jinwen Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (2.5 liang), Huashi (Talcum) (take powder separately), Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen) (take powder), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1.5 liang), Yuntou Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 liang), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 5 qian).
Except for Huashi and Qianniu which are ground separately into fine powder, mix the rest into a fine powder, combine evenly with the above powders, add drops of water to form pills the size of tung seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, increasing up to 100 pills, taken after meals and before sleep with tea liquor.
In the above formula, Baizhu's bitter-sweet-warm nature clears Stomach heat as Sovereign. Baizhi's acrid-warm nature resolves and benefits, and Qianghuo's bitter-sweet-neutral and slightly warm nature unblocks and benefits various joints as Ministers. Huangqin's slightly bitter-cold nature treats heat transformation, and Huashi's sweet-cold nature lubricates urination to clarify turbidity as Assistants. Dahuang's bitter-cold nature unblocks bowels and purges excess heat, and Qianniu's bitter-acrid-cold nature unblocks bowels and removes wind-toxin as Envoys. This is a method of reverse attack. For conditions where Wind-Heat is uncontrolled and heat is severe with constipation, it can also be used concurrently. However, Qianniu is toxic and not an ideal herb; combined with Dahuang here, its fierce and rapid action is utilized. Generally, it should not be used long-term as it damages Yuan Qi; it is a prudent medicine. Adjust dosage according to deficiency or excess.
Huanglian Tianhuafen Wan (Coptis and Trichosanthes Pill): Treats the same as above.
Ingredients: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Su Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (6 liang), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (2 liang), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (each 4 liang).
Grind all into fine powder, add drops of water to form pills the size of tung seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, increasing up to 100 pills, taken after meals and before sleep with tea liquor.
The above formula is for exuberant heat counter-restriction without Zang-Fu constipation. For Wind-Heat uncontrolled conditions with slight heat, it can also be taken. Huanglian and Tianhuafen's bitter-cold nature serves as Sovereign; Juhua's bitter-sweet-neutral nature as Minister; Chuanxiong's acrid-warm nature and Bohe's bitter-acrid nature as Assistants; Lianqiao, Huangqin's bitter-slightly-cold nature, and Huangbai, Zhizi's bitter-cold nature as Envoys. Combined, they clear heat and benefit, treating redness, swelling, and pain of the eyes.
Huanglian Luguanshi San (Coptis and Calamine Powder): Treats ulceration of eye sockets, photophobia, and other symptoms as above.
Ingredients: Luguanshi (Calamina) (1 jin), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (4 liang), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (appropriate amount).
First, place Luguanshi in a strong fire until red-hot. Prepare a basin of water in a porcelain vessel, submerge Huanglian in the water, then quench the red-hot Luguanshi seven times. Place the porcelain vessel in the sun to dry. Then grind together with Huanglian into a fine powder. When using, take 1-2 qian and grind again into extreme fineness, adding Longnao as needed. Mix a small amount with well water into a thick paste. Before sleep, dip the tip of a chopstick and apply to ulcerated areas. If not ulcerated, applying to the inner canthus is best; avoid entering the interior of the eye.
In the above formula, Luguanshi absorbs dampness and heals ulcers as Sovereign; Huanglian's bitter-cold nature as Assistant; Longnao removes heat-toxin as Envoy. It can be used for all eye diseases; suitable ones benefit, unsuitable ones are harmless. For diseases of the extraordinary vessels with pathogenic factors, add Poxiao (Natrii Sulfas) dissolved in water to drip on yellow-red lipid on the cornea.
Longnao Huanglian Gao (Borneol and Coptis Ointment): Treats red vessels in the eyes, feeling like flowing heat burning the person.
Ingredients: Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (8 liang), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (2 qian).
Remove the rhizome base of Huanglian, scrape off black skin, wash, and chop finely. Add three large bowls of water to a porcelain vessel and boil. Add Huanglian and decoct using medium-low heat until reduced by half a bowl. Filter out dregs, re-boil the dregs, filter cleanly and clarify. Store in a thin porcelain vessel, steam in a double boiler until it becomes an ointment, about half a cup. Filter cleanly again, wait several days to remove "fire toxicity". Add Pian Nao just before use, standardizing at 1 qian, adjusting as needed. Apply a small amount to the outer canthus anytime. Another method: add Xiongdan (Ursi Fel) and Ranshedan (Bungarorum Fel) each in small amounts for better effect.
In the above formula, Huanglian treats eye pain and resolves toxins as Sovereign; Longnao removes heat-toxin as Minister. These are Sovereign and Minister herbs. All cases of eye pain are suitable for use.
Bi Yun San (Blue Cloud Powder): Treats swelling, redness, dimness, photophobia, itching, dryness, pain, Wind-Heat nasal congestion, sourness in the brain, external pterygium growing onto the cornea, and sticky eye discharge and tears.
Ingredients: E Bushi Cao (Centipedae Herba) (2 qian), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Zhen Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Use an amount the size of a soybean. First, fill the mouth with water, then spray into the nose until tears flow. Time is not restricted.
In the above formula, E Bushi Cao resolves toxins as Sovereign; Qingdai removes heat as Assistant; Chuanxiong's great acridity dispels evil and breaks stagnation as Envoy. It is an ascending and penetrating herb. Generally, it acts like opening a pot lid, ensuring pathogenic toxins do not close in but have an exit. Its power is small but sharp, effective immediately upon use. It is suitable for gathering force. It can be used for all eye diseases.
Rui Ren Chunxue Gao (Vitamin A Ointment / Prunus Glandulosa Spring Snow Ointment): Treats Liver Meridian deficiency, internal Wind-Heat invasion, attacking head and eyes, dimness, itching, pain, difficulty opening eyes, dizziness, redness and swelling, photophobia, inability to see far, tearing in wind, and frequent appearance of black spots.
Ingredients: Rui Ren (Pruni Glandulosae Semen) (skin, shell, and heart removed, oil pressed out, 4 qian), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (5 fen, ground).
First grind Rui Ren finely, mix with Longnao evenly. Add 1.2 qian of fresh, high-quality Sichuan white honey, grind and mix evenly. Dip the tip of a hairpin and apply to the inner canthus.
In the above formula, Longnao removes heat-toxin as Sovereign; raw honey resolves toxins and harmonizes hundred herbs as Minister; Rui Ren removes sudden heat and treats eye pain as Envoy. This medicine is used concurrently with Huanglian Luguanshi San and Longnao Huanglian Gao.
