Wind stirring generates heat. It is like a fierce flame that must be blown by wind. This is the mutual induction among categories of things, which cannot be violated. Attracted by external heat, it is called "external origin"; prolonged heat not dissipating, generating wind-heat from internal sensation, is called "internal origin". Whether the pathogenic factors are external or internal, the resulting disease manifestations are identical. The disasters of excessive heat have been detailed previously; adding the harm of wind pathogens, how could it be merely minor ailments? Wind causing headache, wind causing nasal congestion, wind causing swelling, wind causing tearing and runny nose, wind causing heaviness in the crown of the head, wind causing soreness and pain in the brow bones. If any of these occur, Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang (Notopterygium Decoction to Overcome Wind) is the primary prescription. If wind causes itching, wash with Xingren Longdancao Paosan (Almond and Gentian Soaking Powder). If patients have these syndromes but do not take medicine or take incorrect medicine, nebulae (cataracts/opacities) will inevitably follow. Nebulae may appear like clouds and mist, like silk threads, or like star scales. "Nebulae like star scales" may be one spot, three or four spots, or even dozens of spots. "Nebulae like snail covers" result from long-standing illness without resolution, improper treatment reaching its extreme, often due to excessive consumption of cold-natured medicines damaging the Spleen and Stomach, preventing the rising of vital energy, gradually forming. However, one must clearly understand the meridians to achieve effective results. Any nebula originating from the inner canthus outward indicates pathogenic invasion of the Hand-Taiyang and Foot-Taiyang meridians; treatment should focus on the Small Intestine and Bladder meridians, adding Vitex Fruit (Man Jing Zi) and Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu), primarily using Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang. Any nebula entering from the outer canthus through the Kezhuren acupoint indicates pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Shaoyang, Hand-Shaoyang, and Hand-Taiyang meridians; treatment should focus on the Gallbladder, Sanjiao, and Small Intestine meridians, adding Gentian Root (Long Dan Cao) and Ligusticum Rhizome (Gao Ben), with a small amount of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen), primarily using Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang. Any nebula extending downward from the eye connection (Mu Xi) indicates pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Jueyin and Hand-Shaoyin meridians; treatment should focus on the Liver and Heart meridians, adding Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian), doubling the dosage of Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu), primarily using Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang. Any nebula growing upward from the inner canthus indicates pathogenic invasion of the Hand-Taiyang meridian; treatment should focus on the Small Intestine meridian, adding Akebia Caulis (Mu Tong) and Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi), primarily using Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang. In cases of severe heat, combine with medicines treating excessive heat, as well as Biyun San (Green Cloud Powder), both capable of treating the above syndromes. Generally, the treatment method is like lifting a pot lid; apply according to symptoms for immediate effect. However, the medicinal force is mild yet sharp, suitable for intermittent use to accumulate efficacy. Although so, initial stages are easy to treat while chronic stages are difficult; gradual recovery and repeated regulation are appropriate. Rushing recovery leads to non-healing. Some modern physicians use corneal abrasion methods, others use manual techniques to remove opacities. Alas! Opacities are like ulcers; how can they heal immediately? Quack doctors using these methods bring no benefit but increase harm, causing fools to suffer without realizing it, truly lamentable. Therefore, the treatment methods for diseases of uncontrolled wind-heat are placed here.
Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang (For those with dominant wind pathogens, also treats excessive eye discharge, tight and light-sensitive eyelids, red vessels crossing the pupil, headache, nasal congestion, facial swelling, heaviness in the crown, soreness in brow bones, external opacities like clouds, silk, stars, or snail shells.)
Chai Hu (7 fen) Huang Qin Bai Zhu (each 6 fen) Jing Jie Sui Zhi Ke Chuan Xiong Bai Zhi Chuan Qiang Huo Fang Feng Du Huo Qian Hu Su Bo He (each 5 fen) Jie Geng Gan Cao (each 3 fen)
Crush the ingredients into a decoction packet. Add two zhong of water, boil until reduced to eight fen, remove dregs, and take hot after meals.
The above formula was established for conditions caused by uncontrolled wind-heat. Obstruction of orifices is generally a syndrome of Spleen and Stomach deficiency. Thus, Zhi Ke and Bai Zhu are used first to regulate Stomach Qi as the Sovereign drug. Qiang Huo, Chuan Xiong, Bai Zhi, Du Huo, Fang Feng, Qian Hu, and other wind-dispelling drugs act as Ministers, primarily promoting ascending and dispersing actions. Jie Geng removes cold and heat; Bo He and Jing Jie clear and benefit the Upper Jiao; Gan Cao harmonizes all drugs as an Assistant. Chai Hu resolves heat and circulates through the Shaoyang and Jueyin meridians; Huang Qin treats upper heat and main redness and swelling of the eyes as an Envoy. It also treats residual illnesses after recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage). Taking it hot is because heat nature rises, allowing the medicinal power to disperse in the upper body rather than flowing downward. For generated opacities, add herbs according to the involved meridians. Opacities originating from the inner canthus outward: add Man Jing Zi. Treating Taiyang meridians: add Cang Zhu to remove dampness from the Small Intestine and Bladder. The inner canthus belongs to the Hand-Taiyang and Foot-Taiyang categories. Entering from the outer canthus through Kezhuren obliquely downward: use Long Dan Cao, as its bitter taste matches the Gallbladder flavor. Add a little Ren Shen to boost Qi of the Sanjiao. Add Gao Ben, a wind-drug of the Taiyang meridian. The outer canthus and Kezhuren belong to the Foot-Shaoyang, Hand-Shaoyang, and Hand-Taiyang categories. Extending downward from the eye connection: double Chai Hu to move Liver Qi, add Huang Lian to drain Heart Fire. The eye connection belongs to the Foot-Jueyin and Hand-Shaoyin categories. Growing upward from the inner canthus: add Mu Tong to guide heat from the Small Intestine, Wu Wei Zi uses sourness to astringe. The inner canthus belongs to the Hand-Taiyang category.
Xingren Longdancao Paosan (Treats wind-heat attacking upward, redness and itching of the eyes.)
Hua Shi (separately ground to powder) Long Dan Cao Huang Lian Dang Gui Wei Xing Ren (peeled and core removed) Chi Shao Yao (each 1 qian) Soak in boiling white water, dip and wash as desired, temperature flexible, time unrestricted.
In this formula, Long Dan Cao and Huang Lian use their bitter-cold nature to remove heat toxins as the Sovereign drug. Dang Gui Wei moves blood, Xing Ren moistens dryness as Assistants. Hua Shi is sweet-cold and drains Qi; Chi Shao Yao is bitter-sour and relieves itching as an Envoy. This is only applicable for wind-itch syndromes.
