After childbirth, the Qi and Blood suddenly exhaust, leading to a lack of blood nourishment for the sinews and bones. This results in sudden jaw stiffness (trismus), clenched teeth, and spasmodic contraction of the sinews and vessels in the hands and feet. The symptoms resemble stroke (Zhong Feng) and also resemble epilepsy (Xian). Although there may be deficiency fire flaming upward and phlegm, treatment should prioritize addressing the root deficiency. One must not adhere to biased approaches or use formulas for dispelling wind and resolving phlegm, which would further deplete the postpartum woman's constitution. By regulating the turbulence of the meridians and ensuring the smooth flow of the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), the sinews and bones will become strong, and the joints clear and free. Currently, due to the lack of blood moistening and nourishing, the patient presents with jaw stiffness, trismus, and spasms of the limbs, resembling epilepsy and stroke. Treatment should first involve administering Shenghua Tang (Life-Restoring Decoction) to generate and invigorate new blood. If critical symptoms appear, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) should be added after three doses to tonify Qi and rescue from blood collapse. If there is phlegm and fire, small amounts of Exocarpium Citri Grandis (Juhong) and stir-fried Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), along with a little Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi), may be added. Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), and Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) should not be used simultaneously; caution is advised!
Zirong Huoluo Tang (Nourishing Blood and Unblocking Collaterals Decoction): Treats postpartum blood deficiency presenting with trismus, neck stiffness, and sinew spasms, resembling stroke.
