(The complexion is the external splendor of Qi and essence.)
In Liver disease, if the face is blue/green like the feathers of a kingfisher, or lustrous like dark jade, life is possible. If the face is blue/green like indigo, like moss on the ground, like overgrown grass, or like withered grass, and the eye sockets are sunken, death occurs in three days. If the face is swollen and cyan-black, the tongue is curled and blue/green, the four limbs are weak, the eyes are blind-like, and tears flow incessantly, death occurs in eight days. This indicates the exhaustion of the Liver organ. (Another account states: internal heat causing dry throat, frequent urination, irritability, curled tongue, and retraction of the testicles.)
If the patient's sinews are exhausted, with withered and black nails, death occurs in eight days.
If the face is blue/green and the eyes are yellow, death occurs in half a day. (Another account states five days.)
If the fingernails and toenails are blue/green, and the patient frequently calls out and curses, this indicates the exhaustion of the sinews, and death occurs in nine days.

If the face is dark, the patient breathes with raised shoulders, stares fixedly, the palms are swollen with disappeared creases, there is delirious speech and body heat, death occurs in one day. This indicates the exhaustion of the Heart organ.
If the face is red and the eyes are blue/green, death occurs immediately.
If the patient's pulse is exhausted, the mouth is open, lips are blue/green, hair is dry and standing erect, death occurs in five days.
In chronic illness, if the malar bones are red, the mouth is open, and breathing is straight/rigid, death occurs.
In Spleen disease, if the face is yellow, soft like a crab's belly, or bright like realgar wrapped in gauze, life is possible. If the face resembles zhi shi (immature bitter orange) in dullness, or like yellow earth, and the four limbs are swollen, death occurs in nine days.
If the face is puffy and yellow, the skin around the umbilicus is swollen and full, there is diarrhea and dysentery, the muscle is rough, and the lips evert, death occurs in twelve days. This indicates the exhaustion of the Spleen organ.

If the body is swollen, urine is red, and frequency is incessant, this indicates the exhaustion of flesh/muscles, and death occurs in six days.
If the mouth and eyes twitch, there is easily provoked fright, and delirious speech, this indicates the exhaustion of the Stomach.
If the eyes are yellow, the disease is about to heal, indicating the presence of Stomach Qi.
If the face is like earth color (dull gray/yellow) and there is no food intake, death occurs in four days. This indicates the exhaustion of Stomach Qi.

If the head droops and cannot be lifted, and the eyes are deep-set, this indicates that Jing-Qi (Essence-Qi) is being depleted. It means the neck cannot support the head, indicating fracture of the Tianzhu bone (cervical spine). Inability to twist the waist indicates Kidney Qi is exhausted. A curved back and drooping shoulders indicate the deterioration of Fu-organ Qi. Hoarseness indicates Qi failing to ascend to the Lungs; scattered voice indicates Lung damage. Any patient presenting these signs will not survive beyond three years.
