The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, accepting all things. If one consumes damp noodles, fishy foods, raw or cold fruits, as well as improperly cooked, sticky, and difficult-to-digest substances, and indulges in eating without restraint, causing morning injury and evening damage, clear phlegm and thick fluid retention will form and stagnate in the middle jiao (Middle Burner). Thus, it leads to *zaochao* (a sensation of hunger mixed with pain and inner restlessness), belching, acid regurgitation, and fullness. In severe cases, it develops into *fanwei* (vomiting immediately after eating) or *geye* (dysphagia). This is precisely the cause. The symptom of *zaochao* feels like hunger but is not hunger, like pain but is not pain, characterized by a state of inner vexation and inability to find peace. This symptom may be accompanied by belching, nausea, or fullness, gradually progressing to epigastric pain. It is caused by excess Phlegm-Fire. The treatment method involves using herbs such as *Nanxing* (Arisaema Rhizoma) and *Banxia* (Pinellia Rhizoma) to resolve phlegm; *Huangqin* (Scutellaria Root), *Huanglian* (Coptis Rhizome), *Zhizi* (Gardenia Fruit), *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum), and *Zhimu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) to descend fire; and *Cangzhu* (Atractylodis Rhizoma), *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and *Shaoyao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba) to strengthen the Spleen, promote diuresis to remove dampness, and bolster the root qi. One must also observe dietary restrictions and moderate sexual activity to ensure health.
One discussion states that *zaochao* is caused by Phlegm stirred up by Fire. The appropriate formula is Huatan Qinghuo Tang (Phlegm-Resolving and Fire-Clearing Decoction):
* Nanxing (Jiangchao Er Qian) [Processed Arisaema Rhizoma with Ginger, 2 qian]
* Banxia (Jiangchao Er Qian) [Processed Pinellia Rhizoma with Ginger, 2 qian]
* Chenpi (Er Qian) [Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 qian]
* Huanglian (Liu Fen) [Coptidis Rhizoma, 6 fen]
* Huangqin (Er Qian) [Scutellariae Radix, 2 qian]
* Zhizi (San Qian) [Gardeniae Fructus, 3 qian]
* Zhimu (Yi Qian Wu Fen) [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian]

* Shaoyao (Chao Er Qian) [Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried, 2 qian]
* Gancao (Ba Fen) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 8 fen]
Decoct these ingredients with fresh ginger and take warm.
Another discussion states that *zaochao* arises from Blood deficiency. The appropriate formula is Yangxue Siwu Tang (Blood-Nourishing Four Substances Decoction):
* Danggui (San Qian) [Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian]
* Chuanxiong (Yi Qian Wu Fen) [Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1.5 qian]
* Shaoyao (Chao Er Qian) [Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried, 2 qian]
* Shudihuang (Jiangchao Si Qian) [Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, processed with ginger, 4 qian]
* Renshen (Er Qian) [Ginseng Radix, 2 qian]
* Baizhu (Qu Lu Yi Qian Wu Fen) [Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, de-rhizomatous, 1.5 qian]
* Baifuling (Qu Pi Er Qian) [Poria, peeled, 2 qian]
* Banxia (Jiangchao Er Qian) [Processed Pinellia Rhizoma with Ginger, 2 qian]
* Huanglian (Jiangchao Liu Fen) [Coptidis Rhizome, processed with ginger, 6 fen]
* Zhizi (San Qian) [Gardeniae Fructus, 3 qian]
* Gancao (Ba Fen) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 8 fen]
An alternative prescription removes Renshen and adds Xiangfu (2 qian) and Beimu (2 qian).
Decoct these ingredients with fresh ginger and take warm.
One theory suggests that chest *zaochao* in women is mostly due to Phlegm, or sometimes called Blood *zaochao*. Eating stir-fried residual blood from pigs can cure it. This works by using blood to guide blood back to its origin.
This formula treats cold-phlegm in the Zhongwan area and abdomen, subcardiac *zaochao*, salivation of clear fluid, hypochondriac tension, abdominal distension and pain, and loss of appetite. It indicates deficient-cold of Stomach Qi with a deep, slow, wiry, and fine pulse. The appropriate formula is Xuanfuhua Tang:
* Chenpi [Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium]
* Banxia (Jiangchao) [Processed Pinellia Rhizoma with Ginger]
* Chifuling [Polyporus with Red Mycelium]
* Xuanfuhua (Qu Pi) [Inulae Flos, peeled]
* Renshen [Ginseng Radix]
* Shaoyao (Chao) [Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried]
* Xixin [Asari Radix et Rhizoma]
* Jiegeng [Platycodonis Radix]
* Guangui [Cinnamomi Cortex]
* Gancao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma]
Decoct these ingredients with seven slices of fresh ginger in water and take warm.
Another discussion states that for chest *zaochao* in women, use Fuling Buxin Tang (Poria Heart-Nourishing Decoction), which is Siwu Tang combined with Rensu Yin.

Decoct one dose with ginger water and take warm on an empty stomach.
A person who overthinks suffers from Blood deficiency, manifesting as *zaochao* at dawn (Wugeng). The appropriate treatment is Siwu Tang added with Xiangfu, Zhizi, Huanglian, and Beimu.
For a obese person with *zaochao*, use Erchen Tang with small amounts of Chuanxiong, Cangzhu, and stir-fried Zhizi. Decoct in water and take.
One discussion states that *zaochao* is caused by internal movement of Phlegm-fluids, obstructing the diaphragm like food, causing discomfort. Use Tanhuo Yueju Wan (Phlegm-Fire Yueju Pills):
