A case of a child suffering from pain in the coccyx (tailbone). This is caused by Yin deficiency accompanied by Phlegm-Fire.
Ziyin Huatan Decoction (Nourish Yin and Resolve Phlegm Decoction)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, stir-fried with wine), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried with good wine), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried with wine), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, stir-fried with wine), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum, stir-fried with ginger), Baifuling (Poria, peeled), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) — all in equal parts.
Crush the above herbs. Use a small amount of Guigui (Cinnamomi Ramulus) as a guiding herb. Alternatively, use Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) or Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) as a guiding herb. If the pain persists, add Ruxiang (Olibanum) and Moyao (Myrrha).
Another discussion regarding scrotal swelling and hernia in children. This is due to the stagnation of Cold pathogen. Burn Wubeizi (Galae Chinensis) until it retains its medicinal properties (charred on the outside but retaining internal efficacy), grind it into powder, and take it mixed with good wine. Recovery occurs after sweating.
For treating hernia causing unilateral testicular descent with severe swelling and pain that is unbearable: Stir-fry Huaizi (Stemonae Rhizoma) until charred, grind into powder. Take one qian per dose, add three fen of salt, and swallow with yellow wine. The pain will stop immediately.
For treating pediatric hernia presenting with lower abdominal pain radiating to the waist and spine, causing spasms and curvature, making the body unable to straighten. This is a formula circulated in the capital.
Qingpi (Tangerine Green Peel), Chenpi (Tangerine Orange Peel), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma, processed), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Chuanlianrou (Toosendan Fructus), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos, vinegar-fried, each 5 qian), Lagui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen, raw powder taken, each 3 qian), Badouren (Crotonis Semen, oil not removed, 1 qian).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Make pills using wheat paste, sized like hemp seeds. Take three pills at a time. One dose on an empty stomach, another dose before noon. Swallow with Ginger Decoction.
For treating sudden swelling of the infant's scrotum, possibly due to sitting on the ground for a long time, exposure to Wind pathogen, or insect/ant bites: Take half a liang of Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), add one large bowl of water, decoct to make a soup, and wash the swollen area with it. The pain stops immediately. If it does not subside, decoct again and wash again. Internally administer Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), taken with Dengcao (Junci Medullae) decoction. (See the section on Heatstroke for the formula).
Another prescription: Use earthworm excrement from onion gardens. Mix with Licorice juice and apply to the swollen and painful area. Alternatively, mixing with Mint juice for application is also effective.
Another discussion on "Pan Chang Qi Tong" (Coiled Intestine Qi Pain) in children. Symptoms include a curved waist, dry crying without tears, and sweating on the forehead. This is caused by the attack of Cold Qi on the child. Signs include closed mouth, cold feet, green and unformed stools, and a dry upper lip. This often results from delayed bathing after birth and exposure to Wind-Cold. Urgently wash the abdomen with Scallion Soup, rub scallions and apply heat (ironing/moxibustion-like technique) to the umbilical and abdominal area for a prolonged period. Urine will then flow freely, and the pain will cease spontaneously.
Ruxiang San (Frankincense Powder) for treating Pan Chang Qi Tong.
Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha) — equal parts.
Grind together into fine powder. Take mixed with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) decoction.
