The pulse presents as weak and soggy in the Yang position, and wiry and tight in the Yin position. If exposed to dampness, it transforms into plague (Yi Wen).
In warm disease (Wen Bing), if there is no sweating, or if sweating does not reach the feet, death ensues. In cases of cold extremities (Jue Ni) with spontaneous sweating, if the pulse is strong, firm, and rapid, survival is possible; if the pulse is deficient and soft, death ensues.
On the transmission of seasonal plague:
In households where plague has occurred, steaming the patient's clothes on a steamer basket prevents infection within the family. When visiting relatives or neighbors suffering from plague, apply clear sesame oil inside the nostrils to allow the qi to enter. Upon returning, insert a twisted paper wick into the nose to induce three to five sneezes, thereby preventing infection.
Regarding methods to prevent mutual transmission of plague qi: For treating warm disease and cold damage (Shang Han), use Tusu Wine. (Note: Tusu refers to a feather tent. Wealthy families gather their households within these tents during the first month to drink this wine to ward off plague pathogens.)
Ingredients: Rhubarb Root (Da Huang, 15 zhu), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Bai Zhu, 10 zhu), Platycodon Root (Jie Geng, 15 zhu), Sichuan Pepper Fruit (Chuan Jiao, 15 zhu, stir-fried until moisture evaporates, approx. 6 qian 2 fen), Saposhnikovia Root (Fang Feng, 6 zhu), Aconite Lateral Root Preparata (Wu Tou, 6 zhu), Cinnamon Twig (Gui Zhi, 15 zhu), Smilax Glabra Rhizome (Ba Qian, 6 zhu; note: ancient measurement 2.5 qian = 24 zhu = 1 liang).
Chop the herbs, place them in a red silk pouch, and suspend the pouch at the bottom of a well in the mud early on the last day of the twelfth lunar month. On the morning of the first day of the new year, retrieve the herbs and place them in wine. Drink the Tusu Wine facing the eastern door, starting with children; the quantity is flexible. After drinking for three days, return the bottle to the well. All members of the household should consume this medicine to ward off plague. Avoid pork, raw green onions, plums, peaches, and sparrow meat.
Sage Xuanyuan's Plague-Repelling Formula:
Use well water drawn at dawn on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. Place it in a clean vessel and soak Frankincense Resin (Ru Xiang) according to the number of people. On New Year's Eve at the fifth watch, warm the liquid slightly. From youngest to oldest, each person drinks one small piece held in a teacup, swallowing one or two sips, ensuring immunity from epidemic diseases for the year.
On the nature of plague diseases: Plagues are all severe heat syndromes; hot-natured medicines must not be used recklessly.
To prevent mutual transmission of plague: Use small red adzuki beans. Place them in a new cloth bag and soak in a well for two days. Each family member takes 21 pills of "Bi Hui Dan" (Plague-Repelling Pill).
Ingredients of Bi Hui Dan: Frankincense Resin (Ru Xiang), Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu), Asarum Root (Xi Xin), Nardostachys Root (Gan Song), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Agarwood (Zhen Jiang Xiang).
Grind into powder. Burn fiercely with fire to repel epidemic pathogens.
Jiu Wei Qiang Huo Tang: Treats initial contraction of plague. Administer within one to two days to induce sweating and cure. The effect is miraculous.
On symptoms affecting many people similarly: This is seasonal plague (Tian Xing Shi Yi). Symptoms include swelling of the head and face, throat obstruction, dry tongue and mouth, aversion to cold with high fever, and spread of seasonal qi. This formula is universally applicable regardless of the season.
