Discusses elderly individuals. If they present with Yin deficiency, weak and powerless bones and tendons, lusterless or dull complexion, poor appetite with excessive phlegm, wheezing or coughing, frequent or difficult urination, impotence, and weakness in the feet and knees, these conditions all belong to emaciation and weakness of the body, mostly caused by long-term deficiency of Kidney Qi. If accompanied by emaciation, night sweats, fever, and thirst, they are also treated together.
Baxian Changshou Wan (Eight Immortals Longevity Pill)
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, eight liang, steamed in a clay pot with wine for one day until black, broken, and dried over slow fire) Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, four liang, steamed with wine, pitted) Bai Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood, skin and woody core removed) Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, woody core removed, three liang each) Liao Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, two liang, stems removed) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, two liang, moistened and heart removed) Gan Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus, two liang each, shelled and stir-fried with salt water)
Avoid iron vessels during processing. Grind into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take on an empty stomach with warm wine, or mix with stir-fried salt water. In summer and autumn, take with boiling water.
For lower back pain, add Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), and Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). For Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome), add Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), two liang each. For elderly individuals with coldness in the Lower Yuan causing Bao Zhuan (bladder torsion/dysfunction) leading to inability to urinate, abdominal distension, urgent pain for four to five days, and critical condition approaching death, use Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), remove Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus). For various types of Lin syndrome (dysuria) with dribbling, frequent urges but obstruction, double the amount of Fu Ling (Poria) and add Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), removing Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus). For frequent nocturnal urination, add Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) one liang, reduce Fu Ling (Poria) by half. To treat floating toothache due to deficient fire, tinnitus, and deafness due to Kidney deficiency: separately take Quan Xie (Scorpio), forty-nine pieces, stir-fry until slightly yellow, grind into powder. Take three qian per dose, delivered with wine. Take in the morning on an empty stomach.
This paste fills essence and supplements marrow, strengthens bones and tendons, ensures the presence of all spirits, overflows the Five Zang organs, fills marrow and blood, elevates consciousness and spirit, and prevents vivid dreams at night.
Qiongyu Gao (Jade Essence Paste)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, twelve liang, select good quality, remove rhizome) Zhen Huai Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix, ten jin, washed and crushed to extract juice) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, twenty-four liang, best if firm and white, remove skin and fascia) Bai Sha Mi (White Sand Honey, five jin)
First, grind Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Fu Ling (Poria) into fine powder, avoiding iron vessels. Filter honey through raw silk. Extract natural juice from Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix), remove dregs. Mix evenly with the medicinal powder, seal in a porcelain jar, wrap tightly with more than twenty layers of clean paper, and boil in a double boiler. If boiled continuously overnight, cook for three days and nights. Remove, wrap the bottle mouth with multiple layers of wax paper, and submerge in a well to remove "fire toxicity" for one Fu period (approximately 24 hours). Then boil again in old water for one day to remove moisture. Take three spoons divided into three servings. Each morning, mix two spoons with warm wine. Those who do not drink alcohol may dissolve it in plain water.
The Immortal said: The formula I created, adding Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) and Hu Po (Fossilized Amber), each five qian, has effects different from those circulated in the world. Dry cough is characterized by sound without phlegm. Fire pathogen attacks the Lung, causing itching in the throat, thus inducing cough. If the disease originates in the Spleen, there is phlegm; if not originating in the Spleen, there is no phlegm. The I Ching states: Nothing dries the myriad things like fire. When Ministerial Fire moves, the five fluids dry up; this is the cause of dry cough. Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) can nourish Yin and descend fire; honey can moisten dryness and generate fluids. To benefit Qi when the Lung is damaged, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) is used. To tonify the mother organ when deficient, Fu Ling (Poria) is used. Furthermore, Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) and white honey both moisten dryness, while Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Fu Ling (Poria) are sweet and belong to Earth, used to assist the former two. This embodies the principle of "Earth qi overcoming below Water position," which is the way of formulating prescriptions.
Discusses Yang Chun Bai Xue Gao (Spring White Snow Cake). (Formula see Internal Injury chapter) For elderly individuals, the primary approach should be nourishing Original Qi and strengthening the Spleen and Stomach. Daily meals must not lack this cake. It is a gentle therapeutic product, most beneficial for the elderly.
