It is so. Salty flavors can moisten and direct downwards. Cold nature can overcome heat. Therefore, it is sufficient to eliminate damp-heat in the kidney region. Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) are bitter and moistening substances. Moistening nature can nourish Yin fluids. Bitter nature can assist Fire (regulate Heart Fire). Therefore, it is sufficient to subdue the ministerial fire resembling dragon and thunder. By eliminating the fire that burns Yin fluids and nourishing the water that assists Fire (Kidney Water), the essence and blood in the kidney region will naturally generate.
One discussion addresses shortness of breath with phlegm-fluids, red and astringent urination, pain in the heel, and a Chi pulse that is floating and large but becomes choppy upon heavy pressure. This is Kidney deficiency accompanied by phlegm-fluids. Use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to deliver Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia).
One discussion on Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia): It is a medicine specifically for tonifying the Kidney Water at the left Chi position. Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) both tonifies the Kidney Water at the left Chi position and simultaneously tonifies the Ministerial Fire at the right Kidney position. In youth, when Water is deficient and Fire is hyperactive, it is suitable to take Liuwei Dihuang Wan. In old age, when both Water and Fire are deficient, it is suitable to take Bawei Wan. Moreover, since the True Water of the Kidneys in the elderly is already deficient, pathogenic Water takes advantage to transform into damp-heat, causing symptoms such as lower back pain, flaccidity of the legs, excessive sputum, Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst), urinary incontinence, strangury, and retention. Without the warming and dispersing properties of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), how could these conditions be treated?
One discussion on Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill): It treats deficiency and exhaustion of the Lower Yuan, flaming-up of Heart Fire, thirst with desire to drink; or Kidney Water failing to control and nourish, leading to excessive spitting of phlegm-saliva; as well as Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) in men with increased urination, and Zhuang Pao (bladder torsion/retention) in women with inability to urinate.
A health preservation book states: After the Start of Autumn, it is suitable to take Zhang Zhongjing's Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) to treat various diseases of emaciation and deficiency in men, those that others cannot cure.
One discussion on Mingmen Fire Decline (Decline of Fire at the Gate of Life): When it fails to generate Earth, leading to Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold, resulting in conditions like Liuzhu (flowing deposits) and He Xi Feng (crane knee wind), which cannot dissipate, suppurate, or heal. Or there is little appetite, indigestion, abdominal pain, and frequent nocturia. The Classics state: "Tonify the source of Fire to eliminate Yin shadows." This refers to this formula. It also treats bladder torsion in women with urinary retention, with remarkable efficacy.

Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 3 liang)
Avoid iron vessels. Grind into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, size of Sophora seeds. Take 80 pills per dose, fasting, with boiling water.
One treatment for Kidney deficiency: dark complexion, cold and swollen feet, tinnitus and deafness, emaciated limbs, weak knees and feet, difficult urination or variable volume, lower back and spine pain. Use Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) added with Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum) and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), named Shibu Wan (Ten-Tonification Pill).
One discussion: Anyone who cannot endure labor, cannot eat cold food, experiences abdominal distension and loose stools after eating, bitter taste with oral ulcers worsening with cold medicines, night sweats, frequent urination, weak waist and legs, swallowing saliva, feeling cold air entering the abdomen upon breathing, wet and itchy scrotum, cold hands and feet, pale or dark complexion, aversion to cold and shortness of breath. All these symptoms belong to extreme deficiency. Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) is the primary treatment. This pill relies on the merit of Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). Fu Zi is extremely acrid and hot, removing entrenched cold from the Triple Burner and deep-seated cold from the Six Fu Organs. Its qi and flavor are potent, possessing the power to restore Yang. For decline of Mingmen Fire, nothing else can tonify it. Although Fu Zi is toxic, if processed correctly, or stir-fried with Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), or soaked long-term in child's urine to remove toxicity, and then used with Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) etc. to restrain its heat, moisten its dryness, and moderate its urgency, leveraging its swift action while controlling its fierce nature, long-term use will be beneficial and harmless. It depends on skilled usage. If one sticks to the idea that it is toxic and abandons it despite severe cold-entrenched diseases, how can it be cured? Looking at Li Dongyuan's discussion on Bawei Wan makes this clear.
One discussion on various deficiencies and hundred damages, five labors and seven injuries: Nourishes Kidney Water, descends Heart Fire, tonifies Spleen Earth, adds essence and tonifies marrow, benefits Qi and harmonizes Blood, strengthens sinews and bones, moistens skin and flesh, brightens eyes and ears, opens the mind and stabilizes wisdom, strengthens Yin and tonifies Yang, prolongs life. This medicine is warm but not hot, clearing but not cold. Long-term use leads to Kan-Li mutual intersection (Heart-Kidney interaction), harmony of Yin and Yang. Fire does not flare up, so spirit is naturally clear; Water does not leak, so essence is naturally secure. It is the holy medicine for balanced tonification.

One discussion on Wuren Banlong Jiao (Five-Nut Deer Dragon Glue): Specifically treats deficiency of True Yang and Primordial Essence, leading to weak Stomach Qi, deficiency-exhaustion of the Lower Jiao, seminal emission, spontaneous sweating, dizziness, and limb weakness. This glue generates essence and nourishes Blood, benefits intelligence and calms Spirit, smooths the Triple Burner, fills the Five Viscera, tonifies Kidney Essence, beautifies complexion, prevents disease and prolongs life. It is the holy medicine for deficiency damages.
Method for Wuren Banlong Jiao (Five-Nut Deer Dragon Glue)
Deer antler connected to the skull cap is best. Do not use naturally shed ones. Remove the cap, use raw material, net weight 50 liang. Cut into 3-inch segments. Wash with fresh well water to remove dirt. Blow out all bloody and foul water from inside the horn. Combine with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 liang), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix, heart and skin removed, 5 liang), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, 5 liang), Gan Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus, stems removed, 8 liang), Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathulae Radix, radix tip removed, 5 liang). Place the five herbs and the horn into a clean jar. Fill water to the shoulder of the jar. Seal the mouth tightly with bamboo shell oil paper. Place in a large pot filled with water. Boil gently over medium-high heat for three days and nights. Frequently add boiling water to compensate for evaporation. Remove, filter out residues. Return the liquid to a wide-mouthed clay pot. Boil down into glue. Set aside. Mix with herb powders. The horn, after removing outer rough skin, is ground into fine powder, called Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Antler Ash).
