Infant drooling (saliva flowing involuntarily from the corners of the mouth and accumulating under the chin) is caused by Spleen Cold. The fluid of the Spleen is saliva (thin oral fluid). When the Spleen is cold, it fails to control the fluids; therefore, saliva often flows from the corners of the mouth, stagnating and soaking the chin. After prolonged exposure, sores may develop, a condition known as "Zhi Yi" (Stagnant Drool).
To treat infant drooling, where saliva flows from the mouth, soaks the chin, and causes sores below the corners of the mouth: Apply juice from *Morus alba* Cortex (Sang Bai Pi) inside the mouth.
Another prescription: Treat as described above. Apply the foam from the mouth of an ox walking eastward to the child's mouth and chin.
To treat yellow weeping sores below the corners of the infant's mouth: Burn sheep whiskers to ash, mix with lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month, and apply to the affected area. Alternatively, burn sheep horns to ash, mix with lard from the twelfth lunar month, and apply.
Wen Pi Wan (Warm the Spleen Pill)
Treats excessive saliva due to Spleen Cold, which flows down to the chin and causes sores.
Ingredients: Ding Xiang (Clove), Mu Xiang (Costus Root), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) (processed with six liang of Sheng Jiang [Fresh Ginger], pounded together and stir-fried until yellow, one liang each for Clove and Costus), Qing Pi (Citrus Peel without Albedo), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) (cut into pieces and lightly stir-fried, half a liang each for Costus and Dried Ginger).
Preparation: Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of millet seeds. Take ten pills per dose, swallowed with rice water, at any time.
Wen Pi San (Warm the Spleen Powder)
Treats as described above.
Ingredients: Ding Xiang (Clove, one liang), Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg) (roasted in flour paste), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) (soaked in Alum water to remove slipperiness, then stir-fried until yellow), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) (processed), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (rhizome removed), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (half a liang each).
Preparation: Grind all ingredients into powder. Take one qian per dose. Add eight parts water and two slices of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger). Decoct until five parts remain. Strain and take warm before meals.
Another prescription: Treats saliva flowing from the mouth and pooling under the chin without drying up. Place white sheep feces inside the mouth. Administer the previous medicine, and additionally wash the sore clean. Apply powder made from burnt maltose syrup to the area.
When infants have abscesses or sores in the intestines, it is caused by the clashing of Cold and Heat qi in the intestinal region, leading to stagnation and knotting of Qi and Blood. The symptoms include reduced appetite, abdominal pain and distension, and a weak yet rapid pulse in the Small Intestine channel.
To treat intestinal abscesses/sores in infants: Boil carp intestines thoroughly and feed them to the child.
If infants are accidentally injured by needles, bone splinters, bamboo, or wooden sticks during movement, causing penetration into the flesh, or if fragments break off and remain inside: The following prescriptions are provided.
Xiang Shi Fang (Elephant Stone Formula): Pound white plum meat until soft/mushy, mix with Ivory Powder, and apply to the wound. If injured by a needle, mix Ivory Chips with water and apply. Alternatively, apply Magnetite Powder. Additionally, take Qu Mai (Herba Dianthi) powder mixed with water, one cun bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a spoonful) at a time, or drink its decoction, three times daily.
Another prescription: Use Pine Resin (Song Zhi) resembling Frankincense in texture, grind into powder, and apply. Wrap with cloth for three to five days; the foreign body will naturally fall out as the wound heals.
