Dental diseases in children are caused by wind-heat pathogenic factors and toxic pathogens invading the Hand-Taiyang meridian, following the meridian into the gums and tooth roots. The pathogens contend with blood and qi, leading to gingival ulceration (gingival rot). Another view states that excessive consumption of sour, sweet, fatty, greasy, fried foods, and wheat products causes fine sticky residues to adhere to the tooth roots. If these are not brushed or rinsed away for a long time, they can also cause gum ulceration associated with gan syndrome (childhood malnutrition syndrome). In such cases, the gums emit a foul odor and discharge foul blood. If wind-dampness contends together, it forms a dental abscess (ya yong); if wind-toxin enters the teeth and contends with healthy qi, it causes wind-toothache; if worms move within the teeth, it results in dental caries (chu chi). Additionally, there is a type of gan syndrome manifesting as lesions in the mouth, nose, and teeth, known as "Zou Ma Gan" (Horse-Gangrene). This condition is discussed separately under the section on Gan sores; relevant prescriptions are listed below.
Prescription for treating gingival ulceration, bad breath, and bleeding: Take one stick of Gleditsiae Fructus (Zaojiao), preferably large and fat, retaining the skin, and one stick of Os Tibiae (Yangjinggu). Burn them together in charcoal until smoke ceases. Cover with a basin to cool. Place the medicine on a sheet of paper laid on wet ground to remove fire toxicity overnight. Grind into powder. Use as usual for brushing teeth. Three applications will cure the condition.
Another prescription, treating as above: Take 0.5 liang of Terminalia chebula Retz. (Wuyi) stir-fried until black, and 0.5 liang of Alum (Baifan) raw. Grind into fine powder, add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang), and mix well. First rinse the mouth and teeth clean with water, then use a small amount to brush the teeth.
Yet another prescription, treating as above: Take a piece of Calcined Alumen (Fenghua Duanshi), heat strongly in a fire until red hot, remove, let cool, and grind into powder. Use a small amount each time, immediately adding a little Moschus (Shexiang), and apply to the gum ulcers.
