Malaria disease is caused by summerheat injury in summer, where pathogenic factors lodge in the skin and muscle layers, causing the interstices of the muscles and pores to become deficient and loose. In autumn, cold-dampness takes advantage of this deficiency to invade, stirring up the latent summerheat, leading to a struggle between pathogenic factors and healthy qi. The yin and yang energies contend with each other, meeting at specific times and alternating in victory and defeat. When yang prevails, fever occurs; when yin prevails, chills occur; when yin and yang alternate in prevailing, alternating chills and fever manifest. Fever is accompanied by restlessness, chest tightness, and mental confusion; chills are accompanied by clenched teeth, trembling, and shivering. When the encounter between yin and yang concludes and the contention ceases, the pathogenic factors separate from the healthy qi, and both chills and fever subside temporarily. If the pathogenic factors move again and the healthy qi responds, malaria will recur; thus, malaria is characterized by regular intervals of attack and remission. Attacks occurring later indicate a delayed encounter between pathogenic factors and healthy qi; attacks occurring earlier indicate an early encounter. Intermittent attacks (occurring every other day) occur because the pathogenic factors have penetrated deeply and move slowly, unable to attack daily, hence appearing only every other day. The following prescriptions are described:
