When a child sleeps in thick clothing and sweats on the forehead, Zhihan San (Stop Sweat Powder) is indicated.
Spontaneous sweating during sleep indicates deficiency of the muscles; Zhihan San (Stop Sweat Powder) is indicated. Generalized sweating is treated with Xianggua Wan (Melon Pill).
Pain caused by cold in the Spleen organ should be treated with warming medicines and appropriate exorcistic rituals; Huahuo Gao (Flower Fire Ointment) is indicated.
When pathogenic heat invades the Heart, the mind should be calmed; Anshen Wan (Calm Spirit Pill) is indicated.
Slight heat in the Spleen causes the tongue collaterals to tighten slightly, resulting in frequent protrusion of the tongue. Treatment should avoid cold medicines and purgatives. Instead, Xiehuang San (Drain Yellow Powder) should be administered in small amounts gradually. Some cases involve drinking water; if physicians mistakenly suspect heat and administer cold purgatives, this is incorrect. Drinking water occurs due to deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach and scanty body fluids. If accompanied by sallow complexion, emaciation, and five-palm heat, it constitutes Gan Emaciation (Infantile Malnutrition); Hu Huang Lian Wan (Coptis Pill) or similar formulas are suitable. If severe illness persists and the child exhibits tongue-playing, the prognosis is ominous.
When toxic heat lodges in the cou li (interstitial spaces), contends with blood and qi, and manifests on the skin as redness resembling cinnabar above, Baiyu San (White Jade Powder) should be applied topically.
If the fontanelle remains open at an advanced age, it indicates incomplete development of Kidney Qi; the child will likely laugh less when grown. Additionally, excessive white sclera and pale, emaciated appearance suggest a disposition of much sorrow and little joy. I observe this as Kidney Deficiency.
Sweating extending from the head to the neck but not exceeding the chest requires no treatment.
Sweating extending from the neck to the umbilicus indicates Stomach Deficiency; the Stomach should be tonified using Yihuang San (Benefit Yellow Powder).
Children's bones, sinews, blood, and vessels are not yet fully formed; frequent crying is common in infants.
At birth, if muscles are thick and the body has a rosy color, but after one month the muscles gradually become thin, the sclera turns pinkish-red, there is five-palm heat, difficult defecation, and frequent salivation, the Bathing Method is indicated.
At birth, if the face lacks luster, muscles are thin, stools are watery, the body lacks color, there is frequent choking and hiccups, and the eyes lack brilliance, the Bathing Method is indicated.
At birth, if there is abundant qi and blood, frequent crying, high fever with a tea-colored hue, red eyes, dark yellow urine, thick stools, and urgent desire to nurse, the Bathing Method is indicated. One must also consider the parents' constitutions: fat parents do not typically produce thin children, nor do thin parents produce fat children.
When external wind-heat enters the infant's umbilicus and flows into the Heart and Spleen meridians, it causes a swollen tongue and dry lips, preventing the mouth from grasping the nipple. The Heart and Spleen should be cooled.
