Mr. Wang of Handong's *Jiabao* treats pediatric dysentery caused by intestinal deficiency, stomach coldness, or the accumulation and retention of toxic qi. If the large intestine is deficient, it transforms into bloody dysentery; the stool appears bloody, with clotted blood resembling chicken or duck liver, discharged along with the dysentery. It is suitable to take decoctions or pills (see formula in this section).
The rhyme from *Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun* regarding the forty-eight types of five-colored dysentery:
Five-colored dysentery has the most diverse causes; seeing this indicates there are five types. Green color is solely due to fright causing qi stagnation and accumulation; yellow color mostly indicates food retention in the spleen. White color is a disorder of cold deficiency in the intestines and stomach; red color is due to accumulated heat, which is hardest to soothe. Dysentery resembling chicken liver implies hidden accumulation often in chunks; black blood mixed together is difficult to stabilize. If accompanied by skin twitching, chest protrusion, and exposed teeth, along with red cheeks and visible meridians, these are often precursors. Urgently settle the zang-fu organs and harmonize the tang-san (powder/decoction); physicians must pay attention and follow the ancients' wisdom.
Another rhyme states:
Do not consider five-colored dysentery strange; it begins before the age of four. Green color is solely due to fright causing qi stagnation; yellow is due to food retention toxins in the spleen. Red and black indicate heart and kidney diseases; white color excessively harms the spleen. Before three-seven [months/units], there are no changes; do not allow excessive sleep, and delay in feeding/drinking should be avoided.
This disease requires first harmonizing the five zang organs, using formulas to tonify Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi), so that gradual recovery occurs. If eyes swell and the child refuses food, only administer Tiaowei San (Stomach-Harmonizing Powder) to tonify (see formula in the Food Retention section).
Yang Daye, Hanlin Daizhao, on the prognosis of pediatric five-colored dysentery:
The causes of dysentery colors have five types; treating the patient requires careful observation. Green color is solely due to fright causing qi stagnation; yellow color often has toxins in the spleen. Red color indicates heart and kidney diseases; white color suggests lung cold. Before two-seven [months/units], if there are no changes, do not let the child fast, lest life be endangered.
This condition requires settling and harmonizing the five zang organs, regulating Ying and Wei, to achieve peace. If eyes swell and the child does not eat, it is a malignant sign. First regulate Ying and Wei, then medicate according to specific symptoms. Do not let misdiagnosis lead to error; one must apply oneself diligently, as among ten cases, three or five may survive, and regeneration is rare.
Mr. Wang of Handong's *Jiabao* treats pediatric diarrhea and dysentery where five-colored pus and blood resemble rotten fish intestines, with no normal stool, only pus and blood, and churning pain in the intestines. Pill Formula:
Fenshuang (Lead Subcarbonate), Qingfen (Calomel), Sha (Realgar, each weighed 1 qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar, stir-fried, 1 qian bi), Baidingxiang (Vomit Stone, stir-fried with spoon, 4 qian), Ruxiang (Frankincense, weighed 0.5 qian, separately ground), Badou (Croton Seed, 7 grains, peeled, core removed, without oil release).
Grind the above into powder, mix with steamed jujube pulp to make pills. For infants, take 3 pills the size of millet seeds. For 2-3 years old, the size of hemp seeds. For 4-5 years old, the size of sesame seeds. Make fresh pills, swallow with decoction, twice a day, intermittently administering Stomach-Harmonizing Qi medicines alongside.
From *San Shi Liu Zhong*, a formula for lower dysentery with five-colored foul matter and incessant mental restlessness and heat:
Diyu (Sanguisorba Root), Baifuling (Poria with Hostwood), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, processed with fire. Each 1 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct with one cup of water until reduced to half a cup, remove dregs, divide into three doses.
Zhang Family Tradition, Three-Frost Pills for pediatric red-white dysentery or five-colored accumulated dysentery:
Badou (Croton Seed, peeled, select white and plump ones, weigh 3 qian, grind finely, wrap first in white silk 30-20 layers, then outer layer of white paper, press with heavy stone until oil is gone, take 2 qian of the light substance), Zhenqingfen (True Calomel, also known as Mercury Powder or Ni Fen), Fenshuang (Lead Subcarbonate, each weighed 1 qian).
Grind the three ingredients together extremely finely. Separately take 3 qian of good yellow beeswax, boil in wine for 30-20 boils, remove and drain the wine completely, melt again, add medicine and mix. Wine-boiled wax can also be used. Form into paste, store in oiled paper. When taking, form fresh pills the size of small mung beans. For under 3 years, size of millet seeds. Take 3-5 pills per dose, wash down with warm cooked water. This formula was carved on the south wall stone of the Zhenzhu Spring in Master Wen Tai's Medicine Pavilion at Longmen Mountain, Xijing. Adjust dosage according to the son's size.
Ji Family Tradition, for five-colored dysentery with incessant thirst:
Fuling (Poria), Xuanlian (Scutellaria Baicalensis), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, equal parts).
Take the Huangbai powder, soak in fermented rice water like batter for a long time, mix with the other two ingredients to form pills the size of mung beans. For 3 years old, take 7 pills with rice drink. To treat Gan syndrome (childhood malnutrition/digestive disorder), take 5 pills with cooked water.
Ji Family Tradition, Supreme Holy Pills for five-colored dysentery:
Houpo (Magnolia Bark, peeled, ginger-processed), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, slightly peeled, coated with egg white, roasted until yellow and cooked, re-coat if dry), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, soaked in wine overnight).
Grind the three ingredients equally into fine powder, refine honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. For children, make smaller pills, take with Houpo decoction. Take 40 pills per dose, adjust as needed.
Zheng Yu, a physician from Changsha, passed down Dingfen San for Gan dysentery and five-colored dysentery:
Dingfen (Minium/Red Lead), Longgu (Fossilized Bone), Huangdan (Red Lead, calcined. Each 2 qian), Hezi (Chebula Fruit, 3 pieces, roasted and flesh taken).
Grind into powder. Take 0.5 qian per dose, wash down with porridge drink. For over 3 years, take 0.5 qian.
