(Treatment of the Five Epilepsies Differently) In Total, Five Categories
*Chao Shi Bing Yuan (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang)*: Pediatric wind epilepsy arises from improper nursing and rearing, leading to disharmony of blood and qi, allowing wind pathogen to strike. It may occur because clothing is too thick causing sweating, opening the couli (skin pores and interstices). (*Sheng Hui Fang* adds here: one should avoid undressing in a draft.) The wind pathogen then enters. At the onset, the child first curls fingers as if counting, followed by twitching and contraction; this is wind epilepsy, and one should administer Zhu Xin Tang (Pig Heart Decoction). Additionally, if the illness begins with body heat, convulsions, and startled crying before the attack, it is called Yang Epilepsy. (*Sheng Hui Fang* interprets "crying" as "laughing"). A floating pulse indicates Yang Epilepsy; the pathology is internal within the Six Fu Organs and external on the skin and muscles, making it relatively easy to treat. If the illness begins with a cold body, without convulsions or startled crying, before developing into the disease, it is Yin Epilepsy. (*Sheng Hui Fang* also interprets "crying" as "laughing"). A deep pulse at onset indicates Yin Epilepsy; the pathology is internal within the Five Zang Organs and external in the bone marrow, and severe cases are difficult to treat. During an attack, if the body is flaccid and the child occasionally regains consciousness, it is called Epilepsy; if the body is rigid, arched backward like a corpse, and does not regain consciousness intermittently, it is called Spasm. Palpating a full and large heart pulse indicates epilepsy with convulsions and tendon spasms. A small and urgent liver pulse also indicates epilepsy with convulsions and tendon spasms. If the cun, guan, and chi pulses are all floating, rising and falling straightly, this indicates Du Mai (Governing Vessel) involvement, inevitably resulting in rigidity of the waist and back, preventing flexion and extension. For pediatric wind epilepsy, if the three pulse positions are tight/urgent, the epilepsy is treatable. Children's pulses often resemble the pecking motion of a sparrow. (*Sheng Hui Fang* says: Sparrow-pecking pulse). Diagnosis must focus on the three pulse positions; if the pulse is tight, it is definitely wind epilepsy. Whenever any type of epilepsy attacks, causing hand and foot convulsions, do not forcibly restrain them, as doing so will cause deformity and loss of movement.
*Qian Jin Fang (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold)* treats pediatric wind epilepsy, accumulation, abdominal pain, twisting movements, and twenty-five types of epilepsy. Da Huang Tang (Rhubarb Decoction):
Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Gan Pi (Willow Bark - *Ying Ru Fang* uses Gan Cao/Licorice Root). (Each 3 zhu).
The above six herbs are chopped, boiled in one sheng of water to yield four ge, administered in doses the size of a jujube pit, three times daily.
*Qian Jin Fang* treats pediatric wind epilepsy with phlegm in the chest. Bai Yang Xian Tang (Shepherd's Purse Decoction):
Bai Yang Xian (Shepherd's Purse Herb), Zha Chan (Cicada Slough), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Gou Teng Pi (Uncaria Stem Bark), Xi Xin (Asarum Root). (Each 2 zhu, except Zha Chan which is 2 pieces, Da Huang which is 4 zhu, and Niu Huang which is 4 beans-sized portions, separately ground). She Tui Pi (Snake Slough, 1 cun).
The above eight herbs are chopped, boiled in two and a half sheng of water to yield one sheng and two ge, divided into five doses, taken three times daily. If the epilepsy persists after finishing the dose, add one more zhu each of Da Huang and Gou Teng, soak the herbs in water for half a day, then boil. (This formula's dosage differs slightly from *Sheng Hui Fang*).
*Tu Jing (Illustrated Classic)* records: *Qie Zhong Fang (Prescriptions in the Box)* treats pediatric wind epilepsy.
Take five scorpions, cut off the top of two large pomegranates and remove the seeds to form a vessel-like container. Place the scorpions inside, cover with the top. Seal with mud mixed with paper fibers. Roast over a mild fire until dry; gradually increase the fire until red hot. Leave for a long time, then remove from fire. After cooling, remove the mud, take the charred interior, and grind finely. Mix with milk and administer half a qian bi (measure) orally to stop the seizure. For older children, mix the powder with Fang Feng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) and administer.
*Wai Tai Mi Yao (Important Prescriptions of the Outer Cabinet)* records: *Guang Ji Fang (Universal Aid Prescriptions)* treats adult and pediatric wind epilepsy with sudden collapse, vomiting froth, and unconsciousness.

Another method: Boil one fang cun bi of powder in two sheng of water to yield one sheng, strain, and take. Infants under 100 days take one ge; those with excess heat take twice daily; taking it once every three to five days is also acceptable. The original formula lacks Ma Huang, Long Chi, and She Tui Pi. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum), Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage), raw Cong (Scallion), hot noodles, Qiao Mai (Buckwheat), pork, Suan (Garlic), greasy, and sticky foods.
