(Febrile Diseases, etc.) Divided into eleven categories.
*Chishu Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang): Pediatric "Wenzhuang" (fever with a sensation of heat) is caused by dysfunction of the zang-fu organs, latent heat within, or cold retained from before, all clashing with the Stomach Qi. The Foot-Yangming Meridian is the meridian of the Stomach and governs the muscles of the body. When the Stomach is disharmonious, Qi movement becomes obstructed and stagnant, thus accumulating heat in the body, named "Wenzhuang". In infants, if the stool is yellow and foul-smelling, this indicates latent heat in the abdomen; *Longdan Tang* (Gentian Decoction) should be administered. If the stool is white and sour-smelling, it indicates retained cold causing indigestion; *Zishuang Wan* (Purple Double Pill) should be given. For mild cases, administer a small amount to silently resolve the pathogen; for severe cases, slightly increase the dose to induce mild purgation. During treatment, breastfeeding should be restricted for several days to harmonize Stomach Qi. If not restricted, the disease is prone to relapse. Relapse damages Stomach Qi, causing abdominal distension. Repeated purgation is tolerable, but excessive use will harm the infant. (*Longdan Tang* in *Qianjin Fang* is found in the section on Epilepsy. *Zishuang Wan* is found in the section on Accumulations.)
*Ge Shi Zhouhou Houfang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve by Ge Hong) treats multiple febrile excess conditions and various diseases.
*Dahuang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (4 fen), *Gancao* (Licorice Root) (roasted), *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), *Shaoyao* (Paeoniae Radix) (2 fen each).
Boil the above ingredients in 1 sheng 6 he of water until reduced to 8 he, divide into three doses. This is the ancient prescription *Siwei Yin* (Four-Ingredient Drink). *Yuanhe Jiyong Jing* mentions methods for modifying *Siwei Yin* to treat hundreds of pediatric diseases, and states that from *Siwei Yin* down to *Ziwan* (Purple Pill) and six other prescriptions are called the "Seven Treasures for Nurturing Infants". The *Baizi Qisheng Zhibao Fang* (Seven Sages' Supreme Treasure Prescription for Protecting Children) by the Purple Yang Daoist, which is dedicated to this single prescription, refers to this formula.
This drink regulates fetal cold abdominal pain, irregular feeding, Wenzhuang fever, irregular vomiting and diarrhea, various convulsions and spasms, twenty-five types of epilepsy; skin sores occurring at specific times, aphthous ulcers, lymphadenitis (Ehe), red eyes, jaundice and emaciation, and physiological fevers during growth (Bianzheng). Use equal parts white and red *Shaoyao*. For purging, use pure red *Shaoyao*, raw, 2 fen. For epidemic Wenzhuang, Lung pathogen obstruction, and alternating chills and fever, add 2 fen, totaling 4 fen. Use red variety for promoting urination. For mania, sores and scabies, red eyes, bloody diarrhea, select *Danggui* with more flesh, fewer branches, and fragrant aroma, raw, 2 fen. To promote smooth blood circulation, prevent sores and lymphadenitis, stop abdominal pain, and relieve crying due to fetal cold abdominal pain, add 2 fen, totaling 4 fen. To regulate chills and fever, break up accumulations, and resolve Wenzhuang, add *Dahuang*. If hard like ox tongue, use Sichuan variety; for purging and clearing heat, use Hexi Jinwen variety, raw, 2 fen. Ge Shi originally used 4 fen; Baizi prescription reduces by 2 fen; for diarrhea, reduce by another 1 fen, using only 1 fen. *Gancao* should be reddish-yellow, tight-grained, and easily broken when snapped; roasted and crushed, 2 fen; for deficiency heat, add 1 fen, totaling 3 fen. It resolves irritability and thirst, clears cold-heat pathogens, greatly calms the spirit and settles fright, is harmonious and non-cold, earning the title "Guolao" (State Elder). Boil the four ingredients in 3 sheng of water, strain. Infants under one month: dose equivalent to an apricot kernel, three times daily. Infants 100 days old: dose equivalent to a millet husk, three times daily. Infants 1-2 years old: dose equivalent to two millet husks per administration, three times daily. Infants over one year: increase dosage according to size. Administration to the nursing mother concurrently is especially beneficial. Besides adjusting the main herbs above, if there is fright and Wenzhuang with external cold invasion: remove nodes from *Mahuang* (Ephedrae Herba), 1 fen; boil in 3 sheng of water, skim foam, strain, and add to the main decoction. If treating original condition, and convulsions involve opisthotonos, upward gaze (Daiyan), and spasms: add *Xixin* (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 4 fen, to one portion of main herbs, add water to 4 sheng, boil to 1 sheng 5 he. If wind-stroke causes stiff body and upward gaze: add *Duohuo* (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), 2 fen, to one portion of main herbs, boil as per standard formula, highly effective.
*Ge Shi Zhouhou Houfang* Another prescription for Wenzhuang:
*Dahuang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), *Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix) (4 fen each), *Gancao* (Licorice Root) (3 fen, roasted), *Xixin* (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (2 fen).
Boil in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng 2 he, divide into three doses. This prescription does not cause epilepsy even with repeated use in children; for severe fright, add *Gouteng* (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), 2 fen. Hu Zhi stated: This prescription is highly effective for serious pediatric illnesses.
