*Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang), Syndrome of Retained Food Not Digesting in Children: The reason for retained food not digesting in children is coldness of the Spleen and Stomach. When infants suckle or eat, if they take excessive cold, cold qi accumulates in the Spleen and Stomach, causing them to become cold. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain; the Spleen Qi grinds and digests it. When Stomach Qi is harmonious, milk and food are digested. If injured by cold, retained food will not digest. Palpating the three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) of the pulse, a deep pulse indicates undigested milk.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* (Comprehensive Essential Prescriptions from the Imperial Library): The so-called retained food not digesting in children is due to coldness of the Spleen and Stomach. Whenever infants suckle or eat, if they take excessive cold, cold qi injures the Spleen and Stomach. Because the Stomach is the sea of water and grain, and is exterior-interior related to the Spleen, Spleen Qi grinds and digests it. If these two Qi (Spleen and Stomach) are harmonious, milk is digested and food is transformed; if injured by cold, retained food will not digest.
Mr. Wang Handong's *Jia Bao*: For retained food not digesting in children, accompanied by body fever or vomiting and diarrhea, it is appropriate to use *Shui Jing Dan* (Water Essence Pill) to promote drainage (prescription see section on Cold Damage with Food Stagnation), followed by tonifying medicines for regulation. If the fever does not subside, diarrhea continues, and thirst and mental restlessness persist, it is appropriate to administer *Yu Zhen San* (Jade Treasure Powder) two to three doses. If symptoms still do not improve, *Yin Xian San* (Silver Saliva Powder) one to two doses should be taken, followed by alternating administration of medicines that regulate Stomach Qi. If only clear water is discharged, *Bai Long Wan* (White Dragon Pill) two to three doses are appropriate. (All three prescriptions are found in this section.)
Qian Yi discusses: Food not digesting is due to coldness of the Spleen and Stomach, thus unable to digest. One should tonify the Spleen, primarily using *Yi Huang San* (Benefit Yellow Powder). (Prescription see section on Disharmony of Stomach Qi.)
