Wang Xiansheng of Handong's *Jiabao* Inner Platform Secret Theory states:
For boys and girls under the age of ten, whenever there is discomfort, one must observe their complexion. If the face appears covered by a green gauze, extending from the hairline to Yintang (the point between the eyebrows), regardless of the severity of the illness, such a complexion indicates death within sixty days. If the green color extends to the nasal bridge, death will occur within one month. If it further reaches the philtrum (the groove below the nose), death will occur in no more than ten days. If this green color covers the entire face, death due to fright will occur on that very day. Even if Bian Que (a legendary divine physician) were present, he would find it difficult to treat.
Figure 1
Liver Affected by Fright Syndrome: The green color starts at the hairline; if the color is pale white, and extends to Chengxiang (the depressions on either side of the root of the nose), it transforms into Convulsive Wind (Jing Feng), accompanied by whole-body fever and frequent crying at night. It is appropriate to administer medicines for expelling wind from convulsions. If the green color recedes, the condition can be regulated and treated; if the color does not recede and extends downward to Dongyue (beside the alae nasi), there are signs of impending death. Blackness at the acupoint in front of the ear indicates Metal overcoming Wood. If external signs are present, the nose is dry, and the eyes roll upward. The Liver governs the sinews; when sinews contract, the eyes lose luster, indicating Kidney Exhaustion. Inability to move the pupils indicates Liver Exhaustion, as does blackening of the fingernails.
Liver Affected by Accumulation Syndrome: Starting from Shicang (the tip of the nose), the color is slightly yellow; if it invades downward to Chenmei (below the eyebrows), it indicates accumulation. Yellowish-red dark pupils, fever morning and evening, and excessive sleepiness indicate a fatal prognosis. Crying without tears is also a sign.
Liver Affected by Cold Syndrome: The face is pale blue-white, tears flow from the eyes, gums are pale white, clear water flows from the mouth, stool has a sour odor, the child sleeps much during the day, and suffers from restlessness at night.
Liver Affected by Heat Syndrome: A thin red aura begins at Zhengmei (middle of the eyebrow) and rushes toward Chengxiang. The Heart Pericardium surrounds the Liver; both eyes become red with much eye discharge. Infants vomit milk, older children vomit food. Phlegm generates wind, causing fever morning and evening, frequent crying, and little sleep.
Figure 2
Heart Affected by Fright Syndrome: Starting at Yintang, the color is slightly black; extending downward to the inner ends of the eyebrows, if it turns red, wind is generated. If it reaches the nasal bridge, there are signs of death. The skin lacks blood color, and black spots appear, indicating Water overcoming Fire. The ominous signs manifest on rainy days, particularly difficult during Hai-Zi hours (9 PM to 3 AM). With external signs, there is extreme thirst, inability to suckle properly, and the tongue protrudes beyond the lips.
Heart Affected by Accumulation Syndrome: Starting from the forehead corners and hollow temples, the whites of the eyes are reddish, urine resembles rice washings, the child lies face down, and vomits hot air when extremely distressed; this is an ominous sign.
Heart Affected by Cold Syndrome: Starting from the temples, black veins invade Yintang. The face is pale red, eyes lack luster, there is a desire to change milk/food, mouth produces clear water, and daytime irritability and thirst are prominent.
Heart Affected by Heat Syndrome: Starting from the cheeks, the redness intensifies. There is much fright, little sleep, dry hair, frequent thirst, redness and ulceration below the nose, foul breath, bad-smelling gums, sleeping with mouth open, much irritability, and vomiting worms in external cases.
Figure 3
Spleen Affected by Fright Syndrome: Starting at the hairline, the color is slightly blue, transmitting to the Liver. If it reaches the inner ends of the eyebrows and turns red, it transmits to the Heart; if it reaches the nasal bridge, the color becomes white. If black qi connects towards both ears, Convulsive Wind arises. If this does not recede, death occurs within a week. This syndrome is characterized by lips failing to cover teeth and absence of saliva, indicating Spleen Exhaustion. Limp, cold limbs indicate Spleen Exhaustion because the Stomach governs the limbs, which is contrary to normal logic; death occurs five days later during Yin-Mao hours (3 AM to 7 AM). External signs include passing black blood.
Spleen Affected by Accumulation Syndrome: Lips are yellow, eyes are puffy, facial edema occurs morning and evening, temples are relaxed. External signs include headache, abdominal distension, indigestion, frequent waking at night. Cold injury causes white stool. Heat in the zang organs causes red stool; imbalance of cold and heat causes dysentery with red and white mucus.
Spleen Affected by Cold Syndrome: Starting from Zhongyue (below the inner ends of the eyebrows), pale white color invades the nasal bridge and Yuanzhu (pupil). External signs include white stool, indigestion, constant diarrhea, white lips, vomiting, and yellow-red complexion.
Spleen Affected by Heat: Starting from the temples, white thin skin rises like bamboo supports. Lips are dry, accompanied by bad breath. External signs include red stool and nighttime irritability with screaming.
Figure 4
Lung Affected by Fright Syndrome: Starting from the hairline near the temples, the color is slightly red. Transmission to Sikong (outer corner of the eye) generates Convulsive Wind. External signs include panting, weakness, and frequent crying. Extension to Yintang indicates death, characterized by abnormal sounds, rattling in the throat, crying without tears, and dry, black, crusty nose.
Lung Affected by Accumulation Syndrome: Starting from the hairline, the color is slightly red, extending to the inner ends of the eyebrows, causing abdominal distension and nausea. Extension to the nasal bridge and Zhuntou (tip of the nose) indicates death. Panting that does not resolve indicates difficulty during Wu-Wei hours (11 AM to 5 PM) for three days.
Lung Affected by Cold Injury: Starting from the philtrum, extending to Chengjiang (center of chin) and lower jaw. Color follows seasons: blue in Spring, red in Summer, white in Autumn, black in Winter. External signs include runny nose, red and dim eyes, red cheeks, panting with rattling sound. Ominous signs include black face, biting, black nose, fever, and irregular panting.
Lung Affected by Heat Syndrome: Starting from the cheeks, the color is blue-white, rushing toward Chengjiang. External signs include nosebleeds, frequent crying at night, severe irritability and thirst, indicating Guan disease (infantile malnutrition).
Figure 5
Kidney Affected by Fright: Starting at the acupoint in front of the ear, the color is slightly yellow, invading Chakou (corners of mouth). External signs include grinding teeth in sleep. Invasion of Xiage leads to ominous signs: black face, fearful screaming, sweat like glue, and blackness at the preauricular acupoint.
Kidney Affected by Accumulation: Starting from deep-set eyes, color is slightly black, eyes slightly red. External signs include deafness, sores on the fontanelle, recurring after initial healing.
Cold Entering Kidney: Starting from the forehead, color is purple-blue, invading Zhongyue. Face is blue-white, with much sticky phlegm (spitting). Sleeps much, lacks spirit.
Heat Entering Kidney: Starting from Shicang, color is slightly red, reaching Zhuntou and returning. Long-term results in rotting eyes. External signs include heavy ears, much eye discharge, and red urine.
Mr. Mao discusses the colors of the five zang organs in children:
Heart Color in Children: The left cheek should show red like cinnabar threads; the Heart belongs to Fire in the South (Li trigram). Restless heart indicates excess heat. Do not worry about wind obstruction.
Lung Color in Children: White on the right cheek corresponds to Autumn Geng; the Lung belongs to Metal in the West. If the cheek shows patterns like horse tails, it indicates abundant lung qi.
Liver Color in Children: Blue around the eyes indicates flourishing Wood in Spring; the Liver belongs to Wood in the East. Sudden blue eyelids like indigo indicate impending convulsive epilepsy.
Spleen Color in Children: The Spleen and Stomach belong to the Center in all four seasons; Earth color is yellow. Yellow around the lips like orange juice indicates accumulation and heat.
Kidney Color in Children: Black corresponds to Ren-Gui in the North; thick fluid flows to both ears. Black hair hanging by the ears indicates kidney disease.
Mr. Mao discusses the auspicious and inauspicious colors of children in the four seasons:
Blue in Spring, Red in Summer, White in Autumn are normal; Black in Winter is also normal.
Yellow in Spring, White in Summer, Blue in Autumn, Red in Winter are peaceful.
Red in Spring, Yellow in Summer, Black in Autumn, Blue in Winter bring light disaster (Son).
Black in Spring, Blue in Summer, Yellow in Autumn, White in Winter are equal (Mother).
White in Spring, Black in Summer, Red in Autumn, Yellow in Winter do not weaken (Thief Evil).
Mr. Mao discusses the five facial colors in children:
Red face indicates Heart disease: fright, high fever, or injury.
Yellow face indicates Spleen disease: bloated belly, belly pain, loss of appetite, spleen cold, or vomiting.
White face indicates Lung disease: cough or panting.
Black face indicates Kidney disease: night sweats, night fever, urine initially red then white.
Blue face indicates Liver disease: large sores on body hair.
Mr. Mao discusses miscellaneous disease colors in children:
White on right cheek indicates abundant Lung qi; slight white on left cheek indicates evil affecting the Heart. White around lips indicates stagnant qi; deep accumulation in philtrum indicates Spleen issues. Pale yellow indicates Stomach disharmony. Blue eyelids indicate only fright. Left cheek palpitations indicate Heart fright; right cheek blue indicates wind in Lung causing cough and panting. Full black face indicates Kidney cold, often with black stool.
Mr. Mao discusses red colors in the five zang organs of children:
Red on left and right cheeks indicates Heart and Lung heat. Red around eyes and liver signs are similar. Only the four lips and areas before/after ears share the same origin for Kidney and Spleen heat.
Mr. Mao discusses miscellaneous facial colors in children:
Golden-yellow face indicates accumulation. Western blue indicates fright. Red face with fever indicates Cold Damage (Shang Han). Cold ears with sores indicate measles/smallpox (red face, full body heat, blue face, cold ear tips and hands). Guest awe (Ke Wu) presents with black-blue face and white foam. Yellow eyes indicate hard-to-remove accumulation. Unexplained black face with frequent crying indicates fright. Yellow face with red cheeks indicates fright-Guan accumulation. Blue-yellow face with itchy nose and dim eyes indicates Wind-Guan. Black-blue-red-hot face with crying indicates internal cold/water affliction.
Qian Yi's Facial Signs (Different from Mr. Mao's five locations):
Left cheek is Liver, Right cheek is Lung, Forehead is Heart, Nose is Spleen, Chin is Kidney.
Red indicates Heat; treat according to symptoms.
Qian Yi's Eye Internal Signs:
Red indicates Heart Heat; treat with Dao Chi San (see Fever Chapter). Pale red indicates Heart Deficiency Heat; treat with Sheng Xi San (see Deficiency Fever Chapter). Blue indicates Liver Heat; treat with Xie Qing Wan (see Fright Heat Chapter). Pale blue requires tonification. Yellow indicates Spleen Heat; treat with Xie Huang San (see Stomach Heat Chapter). Lack of luster indicates Kidney Deficiency; treat with Di Huang Wan (see Deficiency Cold Chapter).
*Yingtong Baojian* discusses form and color:
Before the age of two, infants undergo bianzheng (metamorphic steaming); pulse diagnosis is not yet applicable, so illness is known through form and signs. When observing signs, the physician should calm their mind and avoid confusion. Avoid examining immediately after waking or when crying just stops, as the complexion will be inaccurate. Observe in the morning (Chen-Si hours) when summer heat is not intense and winter is mild, ensuring external color is not obscured by sweat.
*Yingtong Baojian* observes colors of five zang organs (Same as Mr. Mao, different from Qian Yi):
Heart belongs to Fire, color Red (South). Prosperous in Summer, externally reflected on left cheek. Red chaotic lines on left cheek indicate Heart excess heat or wind-heat.
Lung belongs to Metal, color White (West). Prosperous in Autumn, externally reflected on right cheek. White horse-tail patterns on right cheek indicate abundant Lung qi.
Liver belongs to Wood, color Blue (East). Prosperous in Spring, externally reflected on eyes. Blue bursting patterns inside eyes indicate Liver wind or impending convulsive epilepsy.
Spleen belongs to Earth, color Yellow (Center). Prosperous in all four seasons, externally reflected on mouth. Orange-like yellow around lips indicates Spleen accumulation heat.
Kidney belongs to Water, color Black (North). Prosperous in Winter, reflected in front of ears. Flowing black like bird threads in water indicates Kidney disease.
Red on left cheek: Heart Heat. On right cheek: Lung Heat. On eyes: Liver Heat (including surrounding area). Around mouth: Spleen Heat. Before/behind ears: Kidney Heat.
White on right cheek: Abundant Lung qi. Left cheek: Slight evil affecting Heart. Around mouth: Qi stagnation.
Yellow on mouth and philtrum, bilateral: Spleen disease. Slight yellow: Stomach disharmony.
Blue on eyes (whites or eye pits): Impending fright. On left cheek: Heart fright/palpitations. On right cheek: Wind entering Lung causing cough/panting.
Full black face: Kidney cold, likely passing black stool. Distinguishing zang organ colors requires understanding the four seasons to judge accurately.
Yellow-white face: Accumulation. Blue-white face: Fright. Red face with fever: Cold Damage. Red face with cold ear tips and fever: Measles/Smallpox. Blue-black face with occasional white foam: Guest Awe. Unstable red face changes: Fright. Yellow eyes: Accumulation. Yellow face with small red cheeks: Fright-Guan. Blue-yellow face with itchy nose and dim eyes: Wind-Guan. Blue-black sallow face with crying: Internal Cold.
Newborns with yellow face/nose/mouth: Blood Jaundice. Blue under philtrum: Milk indigestion. Green stool: Thin clothing/Cold.
Yang meridians converge on the face. Yang deficiency with wind-cold causes blue face. Redness on both sides below nose: Red Nose.
Blue-white face with body crying: Pathogen received in utero. Blue face: Liver Epilepsy. Red face: Heart Epilepsy. White face: Lung Epilepsy. Yellow face: Spleen Epilepsy. Black face: Kidney Epilepsy.
Heart Wind: Red lips, sweating, red face.
Liver Wind: Blue eyes connecting to forehead and lips, yellow face.
Spleen Wind: Abdominal fullness, whole body yellow.
Kidney Wind: Flank masses, black face.
Lung Wind: Chest fullness, white color below nose and eyes.
Red face or high fever, limb irritability, hot palms/soles: Heart/Abdominal Heat Pain.
Blue/white/black face, blue lips/mouth/nails: Heart/Abdominal Cold Pain.
Redness on nose: Wind-Guan.
Pediatric Cold Damage with dry nose, panting, noisy breathing: Likely nosebleed.
Normal colors correspond to seasons: Blue Spring, Red Summer, White Autumn, Black Winter, Yellow in transition periods.
Spring Yellow, Summer White, Autumn Blue, Winter Red: Minor Evil. Illness heals without treatment, indicating recovery.
Spring White, Summer Black, Autumn Red, Winter Yellow, Transition Blue: Evil Colors. Highly inauspicious even if asymptomatic.
*Yingtong Baojian* Abnormal Facial Colors:
Blue like horizontal needle under eye: Death. Blue above nose: Abdominal pain, Death. Blue face, black eyes: Liver qi damage, Wei/Qi blockage, hard to cure. Blue connecting eye to ear: Death. Red entering mouth: Death in 3 days. Red entering brows/eyes: Death. Black circling eyes from brows: Death in 7 days. Black entering mouth: Death in 2 days. Black circling mouth: Death. Black on nose: Edema. Black philtrum: Death. White nose: Hematemesis death, or post-trauma bleeding death. White circling brows: Lung disease. Yellow on nose/navel: Extreme Cold.
*Yingtong Baojian* Year/Age Colors (Tip of nose is Year, above is Longevity):
Slight elevation at nose tip is "Year" (judging annual fortune). Higher point is "Longevity" (judging lifespan). Blue, White, Black, Red here are incurable. Golden-yellow is normal.
Also: Spring White, Autumn Inauspicious. Summer White, Winter Inauspicious.
*Yingtong Baojian* Four Tomb Colors (From glabella to hairline: Left Father, Top Mother, Below mouth Male/Female):
Normal seasonal colors on tombs are peaceful.
Spring Blue peaceful; White on tombs: Death in 7 days.
Summer Red peaceful; Black on tombs: Death in 4 days.
Autumn White peaceful; Red on tombs: Death in 4 days.
Winter Black peaceful; Yellow on tombs: Death.
Transition Yellow peaceful; Blue on tombs: Death.
