前六般,卢医扁鹊见之亦拱手难言。
(These also govern the hair follicles and interstices; if Qi flow is obstructed, overflowing into the pores, body fluids will all transform into Gan-Lao [Gan disease with consumption].) Five-center heat is a manifestation of Gan-Lao. (The palms, soles, and fontanelle are called the "five centers." This type of Gan-heat is the sign of Gan disease.) Ear discharge is Kidney Accumulation Wind. (The ears belong to the Kidney; when external wind invades the Kidney and stagnates, it transforms into pus and discharges from the ear, thus indicating Kidney Accumulation Wind.) Abdominal distension and nausea indicate accumulation in the Lungs. (The Lung has a fishy odor and contains accumulation; if there is intermittent vomiting or diarrhea, it indicates lung accumulation.)
Craving to eat cloth feet indicates worms in the Lungs. (Cloth is what the Lung favors.) Craving bran and charcoal indicates worms in the Liver. Craving salt indicates worms in the Kidneys. Craving tea dregs indicates worms in the Heart. Craving sour foods indicates worms in the Gallbladder. (Each represents the preference of the respective Zang-Fu organ.)
Qian Yi on Miscellaneous Disease Syndromes:
Red eyes with a bluish tint suggest impending convulsions. Eyes staring straight with a bluish hue, accompanied by opisthotonos and rigidity, indicate impending fright. Severe teeth-grinding suggests onset of fright. Spitting foam and water from the mouth predicts subsequent worm pain. Sleeping with frequent sneezing and palpitations suggests impending eruption of sores and rashes. Vomiting and diarrhea with lethargy and half-open eyes indicate Stomach Deficiency Heat. Vomiting and diarrhea with lethargy and tightly closed eyes indicate Stomach Excess Heat. Vomiting and diarrhea with undigested milk indicate food injury. Post-defecation spitting of foam and phlegm, white or green in color, indicates Stomach Deficiency Cold. Spitting thick saliva and blood indicates Lung Heat, which becomes deficient over time. Yellow, red, crimson, or black stools indicate Heat; red also signifies toxicity. Green and white stools with undigested grain indicate Stomach Cold. Fever without thirst indicates Heat at the exterior. Fever with thirst indicates Heat at the interior. Appearance of pustules followed by macules/papules is a adverse progression (Ni). Inability to walk in adulthood, or thin legs when walking, indicates deficiency. Delayed tooth eruption or loose teeth indicate deficiency. Delayed hair growth results in lack of pigmentation. Blood deficiency with weakness invaded by cold causes cyanotic lips. Deep yellow urine progressing to hematuria or urinary retention leading to abdominal distension requires promoting urination. Failure of the umbilicus to dry after bathing, with wind invasion causing sores and severe infant lockjaw, indicates Spleen Deficiency. (Some say this leads to epilepsy.) Spitting phlegm-saliva with heat signs requires purgation; with cold signs requires warming. Persistent trismus leads to aphonia; delayed speech recovery is similar. Appearance of pustules followed by rash is favorable (Shun); appearance of vesicles followed by rash is adverse. Appearance of pustules followed by abundant vesicles is favorable, scarce is adverse. Appearance of vesicles followed by abundant macules/papules is adverse, scarce is favorable. Appearance of rash followed by macules/papules is favorable. Eruptions presenting only one morphology are auspicious. Strong fetal essence manifests as red face, dark eyes with large pupils, and frequent laughter. Weak fetal essence manifests as yellow face, small pupils with large sclera, and frequent crying. For diseases preceded by deficiency, or when purgation is indicated but not yet applied, first strengthen the mother (Spleen/Stomach), then purge. If Lung is deficient but phlegm is excess, purgation may be used, but first tonify Spleen Qi, then drain Lung. Eating after extreme joy often leads to epilepsy and fright; eating after extreme crying often leads to vomiting and diarrhea. Heart pain with spitting water indicates worm pain; heart pain without spitting water indicates cold heart pain; spitting water without heart pain indicates stomach cold. Severe illness with five-colored, dull complexion indicates death. Yawning with red face indicates wind-heat; yawning with blue face indicates fright-wind; yawning with yellow face indicates Spleen deficiency fright; yawning with excessive sleepiness indicates internal heat; yawning with hot breath indicates wind-cold. For heat syndromes, use draining or resolving methods; if no deficiency remains after resolution, do not use warming tonification, or heat will re-emerge.
Qian Yi on Incurable Syndromes:

The above fourteen signs are incurable.
"Wuguan Guanzhenzhunang": Within seven days of birth, termed "before the first fast," three diseases are taboo: 1. Suojin (Locking Constriction), 2. Qifeng (Umbilical Wind), 3. Taijing (Fetal Fright). Verse says: Suojin presents with fixed eyes; Qifeng presents with lockjaw and sounds; Taijing presents with cyanotic lips; these three signs share names.
"Yujue" Song on Five Zang Collapse in Children:
Staring eyes and tendon contraction indicate Liver-Kidney damage. Stomach deficiency with fright reversal shows yellow-green face. Heart collapse prevents speech, presenting as fish-mouth trismus. Panting and long sighs indicate Lung affliction. (This assesses damage and collapse to distinguish life from death; careful examination ensures correct treatment.)
"Yujue" Song on Ominous Signs in Children:
Silent crying with fixed gaze, scorched lips, black nose, and bluish face. Saliva adhering to teeth, frequent biting, fish-mouth trismus. Legs hooked like hooks, hands stiff like nails.
"Yujue" Song on Critical Conditions in Children:
Fixed gaze with abnormal sounds, teeth-grinding, head-shaking, fixed eyes. Collapsing with cyanotic face, fish-mouth trismus. Acupuncture and moxibustion over the whole body yield no cause for improvement.
"Fengsui Jing" Song on Fatal Signs of Miscellaneous Diseases:
Vomiting/diarrhea generating wind with eyelid membranes; wind in palms causing scratching unawareness. After acute fright, continuous panting; chronic fright with soft neck and thin skin. Intestinal colic pain (or worm pain) with chest scratching, coughing/vomiting with sunken heart region. Cold damage with intersecting red vessels, accumulated heat with black face and falling hair/rash entering abdomen with closed eyes, heat-diarrhea with expelled worms and dry mouth disgust. Lockjaw with low back, cyanotic lips/nose, autumn dysentery with spleen toxin and curled lips. These diseases arise from fright and accumulation; surely immortals left miraculous remedies.
"Zhuang Family Collection" on Forms of Pediatric Diseases:
Children have six fatal states beyond medical treatment, appearing when timing is lost.
First, severe illness with profuse pearl-like sweating indicates certain death. Second, purple spots with dry, cold breath indicate certain death. Third, severe illness with supine posture like bound ropes and limb paralysis indicates certain death. Fourth, head touching feet with limb weakness indicates certain death. Fifth, excessive eating with unceasing dysentery, scorched lips, and delirium seeing spirits indicates certain death. Sixth, crying weakly towards the shade despite potent medicine indicates certain death.
Even Lu Yi Bian Que would be helpless upon seeing these six states.
