According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) regarding the condition of pediatric "Moon Eclipse Sores" (Ulcers appearing in infants, believed to correlate with lunar phases): Ulcers appear around the ears, nose, and mouth of children. The world calls this "Moon Eclipse Sore," as it rises and falls with the moon, hence the name. Folklore states: If a child points at the newly born moon with their finger, it causes ulcers to grow under the ear, thus named "Moon Eclipse Sore."
*Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) discusses: During solar or lunar eclipses, one must avoid eating and drinking. Violating this taboo leads to intestinal parasites and incomplete development of offspring conceived during intercourse; one will inevitably suffer from Moon Eclipse Sores. One must also not breastfeed the infant until the sun and moon return to normal. Symptoms such as bad breath, broken teeth, receding gums with frequent bleeding, and ulcers on the tongue are all caused by violating this taboo. It is necessary to perform the "Rescue the Moon" ritual during an eclipse; failing to do so and going out into a rainstorm brings disaster. The staff used for rescuing the moon must be collected, and divine medicines for treatment should be prepared in advance to administer to those suffering from this condition.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* (Imperial Grace Formulary of the Taiping Era) discusses Moon Eclipse Sores: These sores arise between the two ears and the nose/face, as well as on the sides of various lower orifices. They erode deeply, reaching bone and muscle. The sores peak at the beginning of the lunar month and wane at the end, changing with the moon's phases, hence the name. Additionally, ulcers growing under a child's ear are also called Moon Eclipse Sores. Folklore claims that pointing at the moon causes this disease. If sores develop within various orifices, it indicates the presence of parasites; if untreated for a long time, they transform into malignant conditions.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept at the Elbow of Ge Hong) records that early-stage pediatric Moon Eclipse Sores mostly occur in the two ears and seven orifices (eyes, ears, mouth, nose), rising and falling with the moon. Common belief attributes this to children pointing at the moon. Formula: Burn earthworm feces until red, mix with ointment/fat, and apply. *Qianjin Fang* suggests mixing with pig fat.
Another formula from *Ge Shi Zhou Hou Fang*: Use toad powder collected in May, mixed with ointment/fat for application. *Wai Tai Mi Yao* (Prescriptions from the Imperial Library) suggests using pig fat.
*Qianjin Fang* formula for treating pediatric Moon Eclipse Sores, varying with the moon: Mix lead white (Hu Fen) with butter/suet and apply. Cures in five days.
*Qianjin Fang* formula for Moon Eclipse Sores affecting all nine orifices: Mix rice flour with water and apply.
*Qianjin Fang* formula for treating malignant Moon Eclipse Sores with necrotic flesh: Sulfur (Liu Huang), Ru Cao (a type of herb), and Mylabris (Ban Mao) in equal parts. (*Sheng Hui Fang* specifies half liang each of Liu Huang and Ru Cao, and one fen of Ban Mao. Roast Ban Mao with glutinous rice until slightly yellow, remove legs and wings.) Grind the three ingredients into powder. Apply to the sore; if dry, reapply mixed with pig fat, three times daily and once at night.
Another *Qianjin Fang* formula: Evodia root (Wu Zhu Yu Gen), Rose root (Qiang Wei Gen), and Sanguisorba root (Di Yu Gen) in equal parts (3 liang each). Grind into powder. Wash the sore with salt water before applying, three times daily. (*Sheng Hui Fang* uses half liang per dose, added to warm water for washing.)
*Wai Tai Mi Yao* citing *Ji Yan Fang* for curing pediatric head sores, Moon Eclipse Sores, perioral fatty sores, and snail sores: Huang Lian Hu Fen Ointment. Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian, 2 liang), Lead White (Hu Fen), and Mercury (Shui Yin, ground in; each 1 liang). Grind the three ingredients into powder. Mix with water and grind with mercury until uniform. Apply to sores. Even if yellow fluid flows forming a new sore, dusting with powder cures it. Another version adds calcined Alum (Bai Fan, 1 liang) and Cnidium seed (She Chuang Zi, 1 liang, powdered); this is also excellent. Apply from the ear to the neck.
*Zi Mi Mi Lu* formula for pediatric post-auricular Moon Eclipse Sores: Powdered Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian) applied topically.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula for pediatric Moon Eclipse Sores on the upper ears with continuous pus discharge, recommending Mercury Ointment: Mercury (Shui Yin), Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian, heads removed, powdered; each 2 liang), Pine Rosin (Song Zhi), and Lead White (Hu Fen, mixed with a little water and ground with mercury until mercury stars disappear; each 1 liang). Grind all ingredients evenly in a mortar. Dust powder onto sores. If sores are dry, use refined pig fat to make a paste. Before each application, wash sores clean with salt water, dry, then apply.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* highly effective formula for pediatric Moon Eclipse Sores: Old drum skin (Bai Gu Pi, 1 liang, burned to ash), Toad (Xia Wa, 1 unit, burned to ash). Grind finely into powder. Mix with refined pig fat to form a paste; apply to cure.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula for stubborn pediatric Moon Eclipse Sores: Dried Toad (Gan Chan, 1 unit, collected on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, burned to ash), Sulfur (Liu Huang, 1 liang, finely ground), Alum (Bai Fan, 2 liang, burned until fire extinguishes; another version uses 1 liang). Grind together finely into powder and apply to sores.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula for pediatric Moon Eclipse Sores: Sow's hoof nail (Zhu Mu Ti Jia), Dragonfly (Qing Ting; each 1 unit), Rescue Moon Staff (Jiu Yue Zhang, 3 fen). Burn to ash, grind finely into powder. Mix with honey and water for topical application.
Another *Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula: Tiger skull bone (Hu Tou Gu, 2 liang), ground fine. Fry in 1 sheng of pig fat until yellow. Pour the resulting ointment into a non-porous container. Cool and apply.
Another *Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula: Water wheat (Shui Mai), ground into powder and applied.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* Nifen Powder for Moon Eclipse Sores: Calomel/Nifen (Ni Fen), Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian, whiskers removed, powdered), Lead White (Hu Fen, stir-fried until slightly yellow), Pine Rosin (Song Zhi; each 1 liang). Grind all finely. First wash sores clean with warm salt water, dry, then apply powder. If sores are dry, mix with raw oil for application to cure.
Another *Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula: Naturally dead frog (Zi Si Qing Wa), Sow's hoof shell (Zhu Mu Ti Qiao; each 1 unit, burned to ash), Rescue Moon Staff (burned to ash). Grind uniformly fine. Use a small amount, mix with honey, and apply.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula for sudden onset of pediatric Moon Eclipse Sores: On the night of the full moon, collect rabbit feces, place inside a toad's abdomen, burn together to ash, grind fine, and apply.
Another *Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula: Milkwort grass (Luo Bu Cao), crushed to extract juice, and applied.
Another *Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* formula: Take a piece of Rescue Moon Eclipse Drum Skin about the size of a hand, soak in vinegar overnight, extract juice, and apply. *Wan Quan Fang* burns it to ash, grinds fine, and mixes with flour and fat for application.
Zhang Huan's Qiang Wei San Formula for treating Moon Eclipse Sores: Rose root (Qiang Wei Gen, 1 liang, finely cut, dried), Sanguisorba root (Di Yu Gen, finely cut, dried), Tiger skull bone (Hu Tou Gu; each half liang). Grind into fine powder. Take one "zi" (a small measure) per dose. First wash sores clean with warm salt water, dry, then apply.
