The *Seven-Water Ice* (Qishui Ling) from the *Qianjin Yi Fang* (Supplement to the Thousand Golden Formulas) is indicated for severe heat and the activation of toxicity from mineral drugs (Jinshi), specifically for conditions where mineral qi is obstructed; it is also suitable for children suffering from fever.
Ingredients: Puxiao (Mirabilite, 朴硝) (halogen-saline, resembling ice, five jin each), Mangxiao (Thenardite, 芒硝) (three jin, white as snow), Huashi (Talcum, 滑石) (one and a half jin), Yuquanshi (Jade Spring Stone, 玉泉石), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏), Ningshuishi (Congealed Water Stone, 凝水石) (white as snow, one jin each).
The above seven ingredients are separately pounded and coarsely sifted.
Dongling water (Frozen Ice Water, 冻凌水), Hanquan shui (Cold Spring Water, 寒泉水) (five sheng each), Shuangshui (Frost Water, 霜水), Xueshui (Snow Water, 雪水), Yushui (Rain Water, 雨水) (one sheng each), Luoshui (Dew Water, 露水), Donglianshui (East-Flowing Stream Water, 东流水) (five and a half sheng each).
The above seven types of water are clarified until clear. The aforementioned seven powdered ingredients are placed in a copper vessel. They are decocted over extremely low heat until seven sheng remain. After settling overnight to clarify, the liquid is poured into a porcelain jar and stored in a clean place. The mouth is tied tightly with thick silk cloth. After one hundred and twenty days, the entire content solidifies into an ice-like state, forming crystals resembling white quartz with eight edges. Some may be as large as chopsticks, or up to one chi long. This substance is named *Seven-Water Ice* (Qishui Ling). For those who develop fever due to taking mineral drugs, mix five fen of the powder with well-head water (Jinghua shui) and take in divided doses. A single dose will immediately subside severe heat. For febrile disease from cold damage (Shanghan), use a dose of one dao gui; for pediatric fever, use a dose the size of a hemp seed. Do not use excessively; this formula is miraculous. When purchasing medicinal materials, do not haggle over price; ensure only superior quality materials are used. The best time to prepare the medicine is on the last day of the twelfth lunar month. Preparation should occur in a pure environment. One must fast for seven days prior, avoiding places of filth, mourning households, and postpartum women. Chickens, dogs, livestock, postpartum women, individuals with physical disabilities, and talkative people must not witness the process. Those who lack faith and reverence should not be given this medicine. After the fever subsides following administration, one must cautiously avoid alcohol, meat, and the "Five Pungent Spices" (Wuxin) for seven days, and refrain from harsh speech or punitive actions. Continue fasting for another seven days, maintaining a pure mind.
The *Purple Snow* (Zixue) from the *Qianjin Yi Fang* is indicated for Hongxiangjiao (Podagra/Gout-like swelling of the foot) with toxin spreading internally and externally, irritability and heat, oral ulcers, manic shouting and running, and for resolving toxicity triggered by various mineral and herbal heat-clearing drugs, acute yellow fever (Zhu Re Huang), etc. It is the best formula for treating toxic miasma and epidemics. It treats heat toxins in both the elderly and the young.
Ingredients: Jin (Gold, 金) (one jin), Hanshuishi (Aqua Marina, 寒水石), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏), Cishi (Magnetitum, 磁石) (three jin each, crushed).
The above four ingredients are boiled in one dan of water until four dou of liquid remain. Strain out the dregs, then add the subsequent herbs.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 升麻) (one sheng), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参) (one sheng), Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, 羚羊角) (cut into chips), Qingmuxiang (Vetiveriae Radix, 青木香), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角) (cut into chips), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 沉香) (five liang each), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 丁香) (four liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) (eight liang, honey-fried).
The above eight ingredients are cut into pieces and decocted in the liquid until one dou remains. Strain out the dregs. Add Suxiao (Natrii Nitras, 硝石) four sheng and refined Puxiao (Mirabilite, 朴硝) four sheng. Decoct until seven sheng remain. Pour into a wooden vessel. Add Zhusha Fen (Cinnabar Powder, 朱砂粉) three liang and Shexiang Fen (Moschus Powder, 麝香粉) half a liang. Stir thoroughly to mix. Cool for two days until it forms a frosty, purple snow-like solid. Strong adults take three fen per dose, divided. Administration should promote the discharge of heat toxins. Dosages for the elderly and children should be adjusted according to their condition. One preparation can be used for ten years.
The *Yuan Shuang* (Original Frost) from the *Qianjin Yi Fang* is indicated for wind-heat, rising heat, heat miasma, heat-related strangury (Re Long), malignant sores, toxin attacking the heart causing heat oppression, toxicity activated by various mineral drugs, epidemic Qi entering the fu-organs leading to jaundice, and bites from snakes, tigers, foxes, or wild wolves where venom enters the abdomen and attacks the heart with heat. To expel the pathogen through excretion, mix one xiao liang of the powder with three or four he of water, stir until dissolved, and take in two divided doses over time. Rapid defecation two or three times indicates recovery. For pediatric febrile diseases, administer a dose the size of a jujube pit for recovery.
Ingredients: Jin (Gold, 金) (fifty liang), Cishi (Magnetitum, 磁石) (three jin, crushed), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏) (five jin, crushed), Hanshuishi (Aqua Marina, 寒水石) (six jin, ground into powder).
The above four ingredients are boiled in two hu of water until six dou of liquid remain. Clarify.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 升麻), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参) (one jin each), Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, 羚羊角) (eight liang), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角), Qingmuxiang (Vetiveriae Radix, 青木香) (four liang each), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 沉香) (five liang).
The above six ingredients are finely cut and added to the liquid. Decoct until two dou remain. Clarify.
Puxiao (Mirabilite, 朴硝) (powder), Mangxiao (Thenardite, 芒硝) (six sheng each), Shexiang (Moschus, 麝香) (one liang, added later).
The above three ingredients are soaked in the liquid overnight. Clarify and take the clear liquid. Decoct in a copper vessel over low heat until one dou and two sheng remain. Observe with a spoon; when it congeals, it is ready. After one night, it should solidify into a blackish-white snow-like substance. If still moist, spread on cloth to dry in the sun. The remaining water can be re-decocted until it congeals. Store in a sealed container. This medicine is non-toxic. It also treats toxic wind, Hongxiangjiao, heat oppression with red swelling, and skin heat sores. Apply a small amount moistened with water using cotton to the affected area; application leads to recovery. Administer twice frequently. For heat above the diaphragm, take after meals; for heat below the diaphragm, take on an empty stomach. For sudden heat strangury with urinary and fecal retention, take one or two pills. Patients with heat conditions are generally suitable for this medicine.
