*Shenghui Fang* records: Excessive phlegm-saliva in children is caused by wind-heat pathogens stagnating and knotting in the Spleen, accumulating to form phlegm-saliva. If there is excessive phlegm-saliva, it leads to an inability to take milk and food, and the condensation of phlegm-foam generates high fever.
Qian Yi discussed "Heat syndromes should not be purged" stating: The son of Supervisor Zhu was five years old, with fever at night and returning to normal in the morning. Many physicians treated it as Taiyang disease (Disease of the Taiyang channel) or heat syndrome, using cooling herbs to resolve the exterior without success.
The symptoms presented as excessive phlegm-saliva and a preference for sleep. Other physicians used Tiefen Wan (Iron Powder Pill) to purge the phlegm-saliva, but the condition worsened. By the fifth day, the child exhibited extreme thirst and desire to drink. Qian Yi said, "Purging is contraindicated." He then took Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) (see section on Disharmony of Stomach Qi), one liang of powder, decocted in three sheng of medicinal liquid, allowing the child to drink freely until satisfied. Mr. Zhu asked, "Will drinking too much cause diarrhea?" Qian Yi replied, "Without raw water, diarrhea will not occur; even if diarrhea occurs, it is not surprising, but purging must absolutely be avoided." Mr. Zhu asked, "Which disease should be treated first?" Qian Yi said, "Stopping diarrhea, treating phlegm, reducing fever, and clearing the spirit are all achieved by this medicine." By evening, after finishing the dose, Qian Yi examined the child and said, "You can take another three sheng." Another three sheng of Baizhu San were decocted and consumed, leading to slight improvement. On the third day, another three sheng of Baizhu San were taken; the child no longer felt thirsty nor had phlegm-saliva, and after taking two doses of Ejiao San (Donkey-hide Gelatin Powder), the condition stabilized (Ejiao San see section on Wheezing and Coughing Upper Qi).
Qian Yi's Supplementary Formula: For treating pediatric convulsive disorder (Jing Feng) with hard accumulation of phlegm-heat, it is best not to use mercury or calomel. If unavoidable usage is necessary, stop immediately once the disease is removed. This is because the intestines and stomach are easily damaged, and it also harms the teeth and gums.
*Wuguan Guanzhen Zhunang* records: In pediatric diseases, rapid drinking causes water and food to stagnate in the chest and diaphragm, knotting into phlegm. Excessive phlegm prevents milk and food intake, causing vomiting of phlegm-saliva and high fever; if the fever does not cease, it triggers convulsive epilepsy.
*Tujing* states: Mint (Bohe, 薄荷) is an essential herb for treating pediatric wind-phlegm.
*Xianren Shuijian* Qingxu Wan: Treats excess yang with abundant phlegm-saliva, diaphragmatic obstruction, and pediatric convulsive disorder with abundant phlegm-saliva; suppresses all summer-toxicity, calms the heart, expels evil, and stabilizes the spirit.
