(Deficient Heat Steaming Jaundice) Total of nine sections.
Qian Yi discussed lung deficient heat: The lips appear deep red. Treatment should involve dispersing lung deficient heat, administering a small dose of Xiebai San (Bai Du San). (Formula see section on Asthma and Cough.)
Qian Yi discussed deficiency and excess heat syndromes: The son of Supervisor Zhu was five years old and suddenly developed fever. The physician said: This is heart heat. The child had red cheeks and red lips, restlessness, and excessive thirst. Three doses of Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) were administered, followed by Yiwu Xiexin Tang (One-Ingredient Heart-Purging Decoction). The next day, the condition did not improve; instead, weakness increased and appetite was lost. The physician used purgatives again, resulting in yellow frothy stools. Qian Yi said: The heart meridian is originally deficient with lingering heat inside. It must have been injured by cold and purgative medicines, leading to this consumptive disease. Qian Yi first used Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) to generate stomach fluids (Formula see section on Stomach Qi Disharmony), then treated it with Shengxi San (Raw Rhinoceros Horn Powder). Zhu asked: What about the yellow frothy stools? Qian Yi said: When stomach qi recovers, diarrhea will stop naturally; this is deficient heat. Zhu asked: How was the use of Xiexin Tang by the physician? Qian Yi said: Xiexin Tang contains Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), which is cold in nature. Overconsumption causes diarrhea and damages spleen and stomach yang. After sitting for a long time, other physicians arrived and claimed it was excess heat. Qian Yi stated it was deficient heat. If it were excess heat, why would the condition worsen after purging with Xiexin Tang, presenting with sallow complexion, red malar eminences, five-palm heat, anorexia, and thirst? The physician asked: Since it is deficient heat, why are there yellow frothy stools? Qian Yi smiled and said: The yellow frothy stools are due to the excessive prior consumption of Xiexin Tang. Later, Qian Yi cured him with Huhuanglian Wan (Coptis Chinensis Pill). (Formula see section on Post-illness Emaciation.)
