According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) regarding pediatric toxic swelling: Toxic swelling occurs when wind, heat, and dampness pathogens clash in the skin, causing blood and qi to stagnate and flow sluggishly. This accumulation forms toxicity, resulting in swelling that is red and hot.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang* (Imperial Grace Formulary of the Taiping Era) records: The symptoms of pediatric toxic swelling are not significantly different from wind swelling. It often causes high fever. If the pathogenic toxin is severe and invades the abdomen, it leads to a red complexion, aversion to cold, mental restlessness, vomiting, rapid breathing, and abdominal distension. When such symptoms appear, prompt treatment is required; otherwise, it may be fatal.
*Culun Jing* (Classic of Cranial Fontanelles) treats unexplained swelling on a child's body where the flesh feels red and hot. Formula for Xiaoshi San (Niter Powder):
Xiaoshi (Niter), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Ludou (Mung Bean) (equal parts).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. For each application, take an amount appropriate to the size of the swelling, grind Jundagen (root of *Aristolochia* or similar local herb) to extract juice, mix with the powder, and apply to the swollen area. If there are foul discharges, check for pus points and apply a plaster; sprinkle the powder around the periphery. If Jundagen is unavailable, egg white or roots and leaves of Cheqiancao (Plantain Herb) can be used instead.
Qianjin Fang's Lianqiao Wan (Forsythia Pill) treats children with unexplained alternating chills and fever, who remain physically strong but present with tuberculous lymphadenitis (scrofula) on the neck and body, as well as hard, painless nodules inside the chest, hypochondrium, abdomen, and back. Messengers of the Four Mountains, fulfill my needs. Little demons of carbuncles and sores, vanish at once. Execute swiftly as by imperial decree."
