The Song of Patterns from the *Shibi Jing* regarding thirty-six types of internal Pan Chang Qi (Intestinal Cramping):
When Pan Chang Qi attacks, it first manifests as curvature of the waist; crying without tears and dry eyes; mouth open, cold feet, and a dark upper lip. (The *Fengsui Jing* states: dry upper lip. Another version says: dry mouth and cold feet.) Sweat beads roll down the forehead.
This is caused by cold qi invading the small intestine, resulting in pain that causes the waist to curve, known as intestinal knotting pain. One should warm the small intestine to stop the pain, then eliminate the accumulated cold in the small intestine for recovery.
The song in the *Fengsui Jing* is identical, with a note stating: It is suitable to administer Yue Tao San (Formula see this section).
The Pattern Song for forty-eight types of Pan Qi from *Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun* (The first four lines are the same as the previous song; the last four lines say): Do not let vomiting and diarrhea damage Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi); once the meridians are fixed, pain makes flexion difficult. If qi flows freely, using mild medication allows three courses of action, harmonizing the body to restore joy.
Another song: When pain is unbearable, the body turns black; the body becomes stiff like a bow, extending backwards. Like evil toxins transmitted while a woman is pregnant, why does the physician not use famous formulas?
In this pattern, qi is in the small intestine, knotted and unable to extend. Only administer Kuan Qi Binglang San (Formula see Fever Section), combined with Bai Dingxiang Gao (Formula see end) and Miaoxiang San together for certain cure.
(Formula see Abdomen Section.) Do not mistakenly take other medicines that cause vomiting and diarrhea damaging Ying and Wei; only harmonize the qi.
Mr. Wang from Handong's treatment for Pan Chang Qi is discussed within the Convulsion section.
Gouteng Gao Formula from Mr. Wang of Handong's *Jiabao* for treating infants and children with Pan Chang Qi:
Ruxiang (Frankincense, ground fine), Moyao (Myrrh), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, processed), Jianghuang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Muguzi (Semen Momordicae) (3 pieces).
Grind the above into powder, make into a paste with refined honey. Each dose is rolled into a pill the size of a soap bean. Dissolve one pill in decoction of Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng Tang), taken three times a day.
Weixiang San from Mr. Wang of Handong's *Jiabao*, treating Pan Chang Qi:
Zhen Awei (Asafoetida, 1 qian), Peng'ezhu (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang).
First dissolve Asafoetida in warm water, soak Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma for one day and night, bake dry, and grind into fine powder. Each dose is 1 zi or half a qian, taken on an empty stomach mixed with decoction of Perillae Folium and rice drink.
Thirty-six types of treatments for Pan Chang Qi pain. Xuanlian Wan Formula:
Xuanlian (Scutellariae Radix), Leiwan (Wormseeds, each 1 fen), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 2 qian, stir-fried).
Grind the above into powder, mix with millet rice flour to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Each dose is ten pills, taken with rice drink.
Yue Tao San from the *Fengsui Jing*, treating pediatric Pan Chang Qi pain:
Yuetao (Prunus mume fruit, shelled, 0.5 liang, stir-fried with a little Caowu [Aconiti Radix], remove Caowu], Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 1 qian, sliced).
Grind the above into fine powder. Each dose is half a qian or one qian, taken with stir-fried Fennel and white wine with green onion.
Binglang Wan from the *Liu Family Collection* for treating pediatric Pan Chang Qi:
Mayi Binglang (Arecae Semen), Dafuzi (Arecae Pericarpium), Hongdan (Cinnabaris, measured with incense spoon).
Take equal parts, grind into powder, form pills with wheat paste the size of large hemp seeds (smaller for children under three years old). Each dose is ten pills. Take with radish decoction for three days, then with Centelli Herba (Dengxincao) decoction for three days, then with Pili Tang (Thunderbolt Decoction) for three days. To make Pili Tang, use ten slices of ginger and one cup of water, heat a scale weight until red, immerse it in the water until boiling stops, remove the weight, and use this water as the decoction for the medicine, called Pili Tang.
Anshixiang Gao from the *Zhuang Family Collection*, regulating Pan Chang Qi, internal hernia, worm pain, external hernia, treating all kinds of heart and abdominal pain.
Anshixiang (Benzoin Resin), Taoren (Persicae Semen, blanched, skin and tip removed, stir-fried with bran until yellow), Peng'ezhu (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma, wrapped in wet paper and baked), Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fructus, flesh taken, sliced, baked and weighed. Above each 0.5 liang), Ganxie (Dry Scorpion, 1 fen), Awei (Asafoetida, 1 qian), Huixiang (Foeniculum Vulgare Fruit, 3 qian, stir-fried).
Of the above seven ingredients, except for Persicae Semen which is ground separately, next take Asafoetida and Benzoin Resin, add a little wine, steam over the spout of a kettle covered with a bowl, dig up earth/sand, put in Persicae Semen and grind together. Grind remaining herbs into powder, mix together, refine honey to make a paste the size of a soap bean. Dissolve in Ginger and Mint decoction, adjust dosage according to child's age.
Kong Family Collection treats pediatric Pan Chang Qi. The cause is that when the mother was pregnant, she either ate too much cold food, or impurities from the fetus entered the child's abdomen. Whenever night falls, yin qi becomes abundant and oppressive, causing stagnation in the infant's abdomen, leading to incessant crying, hence named Pan Chang Qi.
Da Fuzi Jian (Tip of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, not longer than half cun, peeled, processed until cracked, ground to powder), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, one seed, remove heart, membrane, and shell, pound in mortar into paste, wrap in one sheet of bamboo paper, press with bamboo stick until oil is absorbed onto paper, until all oil from Crotonis Fructus is extracted), Banmao (Mylabris, one piece, remove head, legs, and wings, use only flesh, first stir-fried with wheat flour until cooked).
Grind the above three ingredients together for half a day, form pills with wheat paste the size of millet grains. Each dose is five pills, swallow with a little Fennel to borrow its qi, do not use too much. Swallow with Changpu Huixiang Tang (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma and Fennel Decoction), take before bed, allow only one bowel movement. Newly prepared medicine cannot be used immediately; generally usable after about one hundred days of preparation. This medicine improves with age of storage, being best for pediatric Pan Chang Qi.
Ji Family Collection formula for treating pediatric Pan Chang Qi:
Luobozhong (Brassicae Napus Semen, any amount, stir-fried until yellow).
Grind into fine powder. Each dose is half a qian, taken with warm wine, stop after three doses.
