According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao): The condition of pediatric ascariasis: Ascariasis is one of the nine types of parasites. It is one foot long, or sometimes five or six inches long. It may be triggered by weakness of the fu and zang organs, or by consuming sweet and fatty foods. When active, it causes abdominal pain, swelling and accumulation, moving up and down, with intermittent pain. It can also attack the heart causing cardiac pain, with a tendency to salivate and vomit clear water. If it pierces the heart, death ensues. Upon pulse diagnosis for abdominal pain, the pulse should typically be deep (Chen) or wiry (Xian). If it is instead surging and large (Hong Da), this indicates ascariasis.
According to *Ying Tong Bao Jian*: Pediatric ascariasis pain occurs because children under five years old consume chicken meat which transforms into worms; these worms bite the heart causing pain. Their movement is unpredictable, hence the paroxysmal nature of the pain.
The song from *Shi Bi Jing* regarding the thirty-six conditions, specifically the symptom of ascariasis biting the heart:
It is solely due to previous rough diet, causing worms to breed in the spleen and leading to emaciated skin. A love for sweets and fear of bitterness (according to *Feng Sui Jing*, a fear of eating) leads to frequent pain; when pain strikes, the child cries loudly and the illness persists. Observe the area above the philtrum; the nose, lips, and mouth corners may turn dark. Using dried lacquer (Gan Qi) expels worms and stabilizes pain; once all ascariasis are removed, the pain ceases.
This is caused by spleen heat and overly coarse food, causing food to stagnate in the spleen, failing to digest over time, invading blood and qi to transform into worms. There are several types with different shapes: some resemble horse tails, some resemble hairpins, some resemble melon seeds. Treatment should regulate qi and blood, remove accumulated toxins, and generate muscle tissue; subsequently, expel the worms, stabilize pain, unblock meridians, and calm the five zang organs.
The song from *Feng Sui Jing* is identical. An annotation states: It is suitable to administer *Shi Jun Zi San* (Quinine Seed Powder) to expel worms. (Formula seen in this section. Same as *Ji Shi Jia Chuan*).
According to *Xiao Er Xing Zheng Lun* (Discussion on Infant Forms and Symptoms), forty-eight conditions: The song for ascariasis biting the heart is the same as above. It further states: This condition is closely related to the standard ascariasis condition, "hanging disease" (Diaobing), "coiled intestine" (Panchang), and "spleen qi disease". Only if the philtrum is black is it identified as an ascariasis condition. First regulate qi and rectify正气 (Righteous Qi), then expel the worms. To regulate qi, use *Tiao Wei San* (Regulate Stomach Powder) (Formula seen in the Accumulation Heat section); to expel worms, use *Hui Gan San* (Ascariasis Malnutrition Powder) (Formula seen in this section).

*Zhao Shi Jia Chuan*: Whenever infants suffer from heat-induced persistent vomiting/regurgitation, or restlessness/thirst, drinking excessively, vomiting immediately upon entry, lasting four to five days. Even if vomiting settles slightly, convulsions/epilepsy may occur, or child may reach towards mouth. This is caused by ascariasis attacking the heart. Folk doctors do not understand this, only using anti-emetic and anti-convulsant drugs, which will fail. Also, ascariasis attacks heart upward every two to three days, causing persistent vomiting. Every five to seven days it hangs head down. Thus infant illnesses are obscure, all done by ascariasis. Based on these signs, must use worm-calming drugs first. If ineffective, then use worm-expelling drugs; no case fails. Infants with ascariasis often have red veins in eyes.
