Zhimiqi Qi Decoction (Seven-Qi Decoction for Guiding the Lost): Treats all conditions of abdominal pain, alternating cold and heat, excessive crying, and refusal to nurse. These symptoms are caused by the dysfunction of ascending and descending of Yin and Yang Qi, leading to obstruction of the Qi mechanism. This formula is suitable for all such cases. The Qi within the human body, through respiration entering and exiting, is constantly connected with the Yin and Yang Qi of Heaven and Earth. Therefore, when the Six Excesses (Six Pathogenic Factors) invade externally, they induce disease upon contact; this is an inevitable principle. If internal Qi becomes blocked, the connection with Heaven and Earth is severed, ascent fails to ascend, descent fails to descend, and cold and heat arise from this. This formula unblocks and benefits the Zang-Fu organs, with miraculous and infinite efficacy, worthy of deep understanding.

Guang Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Hang Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Huoxiang Ye (Agastachis Herba), Ya Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix cum Gemmis), Peng Ezhu (Curcumae Phaeocaulis Rhizoma), Xiangfu Mi (Cyperi Rhizoma), Fa Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Shang Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gong Dingxiang (Eugeniae Flos), Yizhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), Lao Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Da Hongzao (Jujubae Fructus), Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparated with Honey).
The above ingredients are chopped. Add two bowls of water, decoct until one bowl remains. Mother and infant take together.

Zhugao (Stomach-Assisting Paste): Treats fetal cold drawing inward, weak Stomach Qi, distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, and green milk or stool.

Baidoukou (Cardamomi Albi Fructus), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen, must be roasted and baked, oil removed), Guanjishen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma selected), Guang Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (each 2 liang 5 qian), Gong Dingxiang (Eugeniae Flos) (3 qian), Huoxiang Ye (Agastachis Herba), Yun Fuling (Poria), Biaobai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil), Zhen Qinggui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Xi Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparated with Honey) (each 1 liang), Guang Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 liang 2 qian), Yang Chenshen (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) (2 qian), Huai Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (1 liang 5 qian).
Grind into fine powder, make pills with honey the size of Euryale Seed. Take one pill at a time, dissolved in soup of fried rice.

Jicheng Hangxie Dan (Hangxie Pill of the Collection): (Pronounced "Kang Xie", referring to the sweet dew descended by the Big Dipper at midnight). Treats all fetal toxins in infants, fetal heat, fetal jaundice, red face with closed eyes, thrush, mouth sores, double tongue, wooden tongue, throat closure, tonsillar swelling, high fever throughout the body, yellow-red urine, constipation, measles spots and lymphatic swellings, wandering wind, scabies and tinea, erysipelas and urticaria, phlegm-food wind-heat, swelling of cheeks and face, ten types of fire carbuncles, various wind-induced convulsions. It is highly effective for all these.

This formula is not recorded in ancient books but was received from an unusual source, slightly resembling the ancient Shenxiong Wan. In recent times, skilled practitioners have cleverly modified it by adding and subtracting ingredients, making it a unique divine formula for pediatrics, serving as the main treatment for Sanjiao disorders. Generally, if Zang-Qi flows smoothly, there will be no stagnation. Whether poisoned before pregnancy or infected by pathogens after birth, leading to depression of Middle Qi, the aforementioned symptoms appear. Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) clears Heat of the Upper Jiao; Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) clears Heat of the Lower Jiao; Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) clears Heat of the Middle Jiao, and also utilizes its function of eliminating the old and generating the new, invigorating blood and relieving irritability, guiding the stagnant Fire of the Sanjiao out through the anus. Worrying that bitter-cold properties might cause coagulation and cloying, Bolang (Arecae Semen) and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) are added for their acrid-dispersing nature, acting as assistants to move Qi and benefit phlegm; Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) guide wind-heat from the head and face downward; Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) resolves toxicity and relieves irritability; Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) harmonizes Ying and invigorates blood; Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen) promotes urination, moves through the Qi level to relieve stagnation; Huashi (Talcum) is clear and moistening, suppresses Yang Fire and supports Yin, and guides pathogenic heat out through urine. Used to treat the aforementioned excess syndromes, its effect is as immediate as a drumstick striking a drum. Throughout my life, I have been most cautious about using attacking methods, yet I have used this formula for the longest time, and its efficacy cannot be fully described; it is truly a good prescription for saving the world.

Hang Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (9 qian, washed with wine), Jin Zhuang Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (9 qian, steamed with wine), Shi Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (9 qian, stir-fried with wine), Nong Chuanbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (9 qian, stir-fried with wine), Hei Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen, stir-fried, take the finest powder) (6 qian), Bohe Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (4.5 qian), Fen Huashi (Talcum, water-sedimented) (6 qian), Jian Banglang (Arecae Semen) (7.5 qian, washed with child's urine, dried), Chen Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (4.5 qian, stir-fried with bran), Jing Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) (stir-fried, 6 qian).
The above ten ingredients, processed according to the prescription, mixed evenly, dried by baking, ground into extremely fine powder, made into pills with refined honey the size of Euryale Seed. Infants within one month take one pill each; slightly older ones take two pills. All should be taken dissolved in tea. Nursing mothers must strictly avoid greasy food. As soon as slight diarrhea occurs, the medicinal power has acted, and the illness will subside.

If there is no diarrhea, continue taking it. For severe illnesses, take three times daily until cured. This formula is absolutely not harsh or fierce; do not doubt or fear it. However, it is contraindicated for those with fetal cold and fetal weakness presenting with a cyanotic or pale face.

Lima Wan (Six-Ma Pill): Treats fetal convulsions. First use this pill to unblock the meridians, then take Dihuang Wan.

Mingtianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, prepared with ginger), Fa Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Bei Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuan Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Niudanxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile Bulbus), Zhi Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Bei Quanxie (Scorpio) (each 5 qian).
Grind into fine powder, make pills with honey the size of Euryale Seed. Take one pill at a time, taken down with Gouteng Tang (Uncaria Decoction).

Liwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill): Also known as Dihuang Wan from *Jinkui Yaolue* created by Zhang Zhongjing. Originally treats Kidney Water deficiency, dribbling urination, dizziness of head and eyes, soreness and weakness of waist and legs, Yin-deficiency fever, spontaneous sweating and night sweats, emaciation and weakness, mental fatigue. "Strengthen the master of Water to control the Sunlight," this is the formula referred to.

Qian Zhongyang used it to treat infant fetal weakness due to congenital insufficiency, as well as Liver Galactophorous Viscera malnutrition causing white membrane covering the pupil, bloody diarrhea with loss of voice, emaciated body with sores and scabies, Kidney weakness with delayed speech, fontanelle opening and delayed walking.

Xue Lizhai further used it to treat infant Liver channel Blood deficiency and dry-heat, Kidney channel deficiency heat causing thirst, dribbling and retention of urine, phlegm-Qi blocking upward, or wind-pathogen invading, lymphatic swellings and nodules, convulsions of four limbs, twitching of eyes, hemoptysis and hematemesis, dizziness of head and eyes, dry and painful throat, sores in mouth and tongue, or congenital insufficiency leading to fontanelle opening and loss of voice, five delays and five softnesses, Kidney Galactophorous Viscera malnutrition and Liver Galactophorous Viscera malnutrition. For all syndromes of Liver and Kidney insufficiency, this formula is suitable to nourish the source of transformation, and its merits cannot be fully stated.

My commentary: Qian Yi and Xue Ji, the two elders, were able to use this formula to treat congenital insufficiency in infants, which is indeed a mark of profound insight, and I admire them. Unfortunately, children today have physical constitution and Yuan Qi even less than before. In ancient times, Dihuang Wan was considered a tonic, but now it acts more as a cooling agent. This medicine is indeed appropriate for those with Yin deficiency and dryness. However, if the child has fat muscles and a white complexion, with weak Spleen and much phlegm, taking this will certainly cause cloying in the diaphragm and generate other syndromes, causing significant harm. It is not that the formula is bad, but that the congenital endowment nowadays is thinner. Therefore, I have deliberated on its processing method, ensuring that the yin-coagulating nature of Dihuang is slightly closer to yang-warmth, preventing it from being overly cold and frozen, thus avoiding the harm of cloying the diaphragm and damaging the Spleen.

Bawei Dihuang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill): Treats congenital insufficiency.
It is the aforementioned Liwei Dihuang Wan plus Qinghuagui (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 1 liang and Shu Chuanfu (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) 1 liang, treating congenital Mingmen Fire decline. Symptoms include delayed tooth eruption, delayed speech, delayed walking, large fontanelle, Kidney Galactophorous Viscera malnutrition, etc. Or fire decline failing to generate Earth, leading to Spleen Earth deficiency-cold, lack of desire for milk and food, frequent nocturnal enuresis, all indicating congenital insufficiency. Since the Zhou Dynasty, there have been discussions on deficiency diseases of the Kidney; if filled from early childhood, recovery is often possible. Decoct this formula in water, named Bawei Dihuang Tang (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction). The classic states: "Benefit the source of Fire to eliminate Yin shadows." This refers to it. Mothers who are fat and white-complexed should take it together with their infants.
