Yu Jiayan said: The category of "Jing Feng" (Startling Wind) was fabricated and discussed recklessly by the ancients, causing untold harm to countless children in later generations. This is because infants are born with insufficient Yin Qi and possess a nature of pure Yang. Heat easily generates within the body; when heat becomes excessive, it generates Wind and Phlegm, which is a common occurrence. However, naming this condition "Jing Feng" and subsequently establishing categories such as the Eight Signs (symptoms associated with Jing Feng) was erroneous. Infants have loose Cou Li (skin pores and interstitial spaces), making them susceptible to Cold Evil. When Cold Evil invades the human body, it first enters the Taiyang Meridian. The Taiyang meridian originates from the inner canthus, ascends to the forehead and intersects at the vertex, then descends through the neck, flanking the spine to reach the waist. Therefore, when diseased, the sinews and vessels become stiff and tense, leading to various names for spasms, jerking, and convulsions. If one recklessly uses mineral drugs (Jin Shi) or musk and borneol for opening orifices and suppressing agitation, it draws the pathogen deep into the Zang-Fu organs, resulting in death in almost every case. This error stems from the claim that "children under eight years old do not suffer from Shang Han" (Cold Damage), thereby creating the category of Jing Feng. In reality, children cannot tolerate Shang Han well; thus, when the pathogen initially transmits to the Taiyang meridian, symptoms such as body stiffness, profuse sweating, tendon tension, and mental cloudiness already appear, indicating an extremely severe condition. If medicine is administered wrongly at this stage, danger follows immediately, leaving no room for waiting until the pathogen transmits meridians before attempting to resolve it. Hence, the statement "children do not suffer from Shang Han" is made. It is unknown that children are prone to external contraction, with Shang Han being the most common. What the world recklessly calls "Jing Feng" is actually this condition. Therefore, for children with Shang Han, it is crucial to achieve recovery within three days; if the disease progresses to transmitting meridians, the child's strength will be insufficient to endure it.

Furthermore, in the category of Shang Han, Gang Jing (Stiff Spasm) presents without sweat, while Rou Jing (Soft Spasm) presents with sweat. Children rarely suffer from Gang Jing but often from Rou Jing. Laypeople see children sweating incessantly and remaining unconscious, and they name it "Man Jing" (Slow Startling Wind). They recklessly use herbs like Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), and Fu Zi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata) to close the Cou Li, preventing Heat Evil from venting outward, which causes great harm, though slightly less than mineral drugs. Thus, whenever treating heat in children, one must carefully examine the deficiency or excess of the Yuan Qi (Original Qi), observe the severity of the external evil, distinguish between Yin and Yang, and determine whether it is exterior or interior. One should thoroughly expel the external evil to the surface, not consolidate the pathogen inside. Zhang Zhongjing originally had Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), but it was discarded. Instead, people focused on Jing Feng, deviating by a hair's breadth and causing immeasurable harm.

Yu Jiayan also said: Children have fragile bodies and timid spirits, unable to tolerate high fever from external contractions, often developing Jing Bing (Spasm Disease). Later generations named it "Jing Feng," proposing baseless theories of Four Signs and Eight Signs. In truth, what is described as the jerking of head shaking and hand moving in Jing Feng refers to the spasm of head shaking and hand moving in Jing Bing; what is called the convulsion of sudden jaw lock and leg cramping in Jing Feng refers to the sudden jaw lock and leg cramping in Jing Bing; and what is termed the opisthotonos in Jing Feng refers to the opisthotonos in Jing Bing. Pediatricians unanimously followed this, and patients' families accepted it passively. Instead of treating the invading external evil, they administered mineral and musk drugs, leading to death in almost every case without realization.

Yu Jiayan further stated: Anyone who treats pediatric Jing Bing but recklessly calls it Jing Feng and lightly uses suppressing drugs will kill the child instantly. This practice should be banned nationwide. Because children cannot tolerate high fever from Shang Han and easily fall into coma, they may not even react to loud noises like gunfire nearby. Relying on the false diagnosis of Jing Feng and using suppressing drugs draws external pathogens deep into the five internal organs, resulting in death every time, with never a single survivor. If the nation does not strictly prohibit this, where will it end?

Yu Jiayan also said: After childbirth, women's blood reservoirs are empty, making them susceptible to external wind. Zhang Zhongjing stated that postpartum blood loss leads to deficiency, profuse sweating, and susceptibility to wind strike. Therefore, later virtuous physicians drove wind from the blood reservoir (primarily referring to the Liver), following established methods. Only incompetent doctors would recklessly use wind-calming drugs. Unlike the term "pediatric Jing Feng," which has caused harm for millennia, even wise men are not immune to this error. I hereby urge a national ban to eradicate the term "Jing Feng" and exclude such practitioners from the medical field. Whenever children suffer from fever and coma, one must select masters of Shang Han treatment and follow meridian protocols for rescue, ensuring nearly 100% success, thereby breaking the life-and-death barrier for children, bringing joy to heaven, earth, and humanity. (Note: Jing [Spasm] is pronounced 'qing', meaning a disease of wind-induced stiffness).

The previous arguments by Mr. Yu to debunk Jing Feng and clarify that the disease is actually Jing Bing were indeed excellent! However, the name "Jing Feng" has been misused for a long time, confusing many. If we do not analyze it clearly and detail the symptoms and treatments, providing a basis for clinicians, how can future generations believe it? I do not shy away from appearing presumptuous and request to clarify this in detail. Jing Bing is not limited to one type; it affects both men and women, not just children. For example, Jing Bing can result from excessive sweating in Taiyang disease, mistaken purgation in wind diseases, mistaken sweating in skin ulcer cases, wind exposure after excessive sweating postpartum, wind exposure after traumatic injuries, deficiency of the exterior failing to resist wind-cold, and excessive blood loss. However, for men and women suffering from this, doctors treat according to the Taiyang and Jueyin meridians. It is unheard of to treat Jing Bing using Jing Feng methods. Only in children is Jing Bing uniquely named and treated as Jing Feng, due to errors transmitted since the Song Dynasty. One person initiated it, and others followed, lacking proper lineage wisdom and relying on subjective speculation, leading them further astray and away from orthodox teachings, even producing absurd claims that Huang Di did not understand pediatrics. Little did they know that the *Nei Jing* (Inner Canon) contains discussions on fever and wind-heat in infants (*Tong Ping Xu Shi Lun*), and notes on the fragility of infants, weak blood and Qi, and the use of fine needles (*Ci Ni Lun*). Although only three chapters, the pulse signs and treatments are clear and reliable. Today's adults were once infants; future general practitioners were once pediatricians. Humans are the same, principles are the same; why divide them? Hence, separating pediatrics is unnecessary. Regrettably, later generations not only divided them but also blatantly ignored classic teachings, obscuring the truth and allowing baseless rumors to spread, betraying classics and sages, a crime beyond forgiveness. Thus, Yu Jiayan's passionate refutation of these errors has historical roots. I am not merely echoing him; I have personal conviction. Having practiced clinically for over forty years and treated tens of thousands of infants, I never mentioned "Jing Feng" nor encountered a single case of true Jing Feng. Occasionally, I encountered Shang Han Jing Bing with coma, which I revived using fire therapy (such as moxibustion) and treated according to meridians, resulting in full recovery. I never used Bao Long Wan (Dragon-Holding Pill) or Su He Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) for suppression or opening orifices. This proves Yu's words are accurate. Some ask: Classics state that wind, cold, and dampness combine to cause Jing Bing. How can infants in swaddling clothes suffer from wind, cold, and dampness? I reply: You think wind, cold, and dampness are rare for infants, but they are actually most common. Poor children live in low, narrow houses with poor windows and thin clothing, sitting or lying in improper places, unable to defend against wind and cold. Wealthy children are overly protected; doors and windows are closed upon birth, avoiding wind and sunlight, wearing heavy layers, causing excessive warmth and slight sweating, making Cou Li loose. Sudden changes in clothing allow wind and cold to enter. Dampness is even harder to avoid. Wet diapers, urine leaks, bathing with fecal contamination, and wrapping sick children too tightly causing sweat accumulation without changing clothes—all contribute to dampness. Infants suffer from these three evils subtly, often undetected by doctors.

Moreover, pediatricians fail to investigate the source of disease, keeping "Jing Feng" in mind. Upon seeing fever and coma, they diagnose Jing Feng and apply rigid methods of opening orifices, suppressing wind, and stopping convulsions to treat unpredictable Shang Han, suppressing exterior pathogens and blocking their exit, leading to fatal toxicity. The dead do not know why, parents do not know why, and doctors do not know why the patient died. This is not solely the fault of later generations; the originators bear responsibility.

The harm of false naming is most cruel. Not only do pediatricians speak of Jing Feng, but patients' families do too, especially women, who are the most confused. Customs have created a world dominated by the concept of Jing Feng. Most shocking is that when children are ill, families do not distinguish between Shang Han, miscellaneous diseases, internal injury, or external contraction, but immediately attribute it to fright. Doctors, pleased with this easy diagnosis, administer wind-calming drugs without verifying if fright is the cause. As pathogens move inward and high fever persists, doctors fail to determine if heat is exterior or interior, deficient or excess, and simply claim "heat generates wind." Families agree, demanding wind-stopping and convulsion-stopping drugs. Doctors comply, families accept blindly, leading to disastrous results contrary to the correct direction. The illness worsens, yet families remain unconcerned. If a competent doctor diagnoses correctly and avoids Jing Feng treatments, families become dissatisfied, seek other doctors, and inevitably face irreversible outcomes and death. Such deaths cannot be blamed solely on doctors; families contribute significantly. Alas, the harm of false naming is indeed this severe!
