One, if an infant has historically suffered from neonatal tetanus (Umbilical Wind), every birth may be obstructed. On the second day after birth, do not wait for symptoms to manifest; first apply this lamp-moxibustion therapy to disperse the pathogen, with nearly 100% efficacy.
Two, newborn infants who cry excessively without nursing, sneeze, yawn, and have loose lips when attempting to suckle are showing early signs of impending neonatal tetanus (Umbilical Wind). Immediately treat with this lamp-moxibustion therapy.
Three, in cases where a child presents with cyanotic or dark facial complexion, neck stiffness with head shaking, hyperextension of the body with face rubbing, cyanotic eyes with angry staring, lateral or vertical gaze deviations, frequent blinking, nuchal rigidity, tongue retraction with visible tendons, whistling sounds with puckered mouth, crying while biting, hand movements resembling counting or pulling, leg jerking, sudden agitation or confusion, loss of spirit and will, provided the demeanor differs from usual: these indicate that prior exterior-interior disharmony is about to develop into convulsions (Jing Syndrome). This lamp-moxibustion therapy is extremely effective.
Four, for tetanus resulting from Cold Damage (Shanghan) presenting with opisthotonos, lateral gaze deviation, and lateral convulsions, as well as for sudden death due to Evil Invasion (Zhong E), Guest Anger (Ke Wu), epilepsy, food stagnation filling the Taiyin Spleen, and all types of closure syndromes caused by Wind, Fire, Phlegm, or Qi obstruction, this lamp-moxibustion therapy is most miraculous.
Five, for dietary injury to the Spleen and Stomach causing abdominal distension with visible subcutaneous veins, on the noon hour of the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Day), apply the full-body lamp-moxibustion regimen. Then, at each bifurcation point of the visible veins, apply one moxa cone per branch; the disease will naturally resolve.
Six, for syndromes of obstruction caused by Wind-Cold and Phlegm-Qi, this lamp-moxibustion possesses miraculous efficacy. After completing the lamp-moxibustion, wait until the infant stops crying, then administer half a pill of Jin Su Dan (Golden Grain Pill) dissolved in Ginger Decoction. After ingestion, wrap the infant in clothing, cover the head and face, and allow them to lie quietly for a moment to restore their spirit and consciousness; the illness will vanish as if it never existed.
One, for children suffering from common colds in any season, presenting with fever and spontaneous sweating, normal bowel and bladder functions, normal lip and tongue appearance, and no thirst, this is a mild Exterior Syndrome. It resolves with dispersing and resolving methods. Fools mistakenly use lamp-moxibustion here, treating a mild condition severely, which brings misfortune.
One, when pathogens have entered the Interior, presenting with fever, red face, thirst, constipation of urine and stool, cracked lips, purple tongue, red eyes, heat in the palms and soles, night fever with irritability, yellow thick tongue coating, flailing limbs, kicking off covers, this indicates Interior Heat Syndrome. It resolves with clearing and draining methods. Lamp-moxibustion must not be used; forcing fire will not drive heat from the interior to the exterior but will instead assist heat and consume Yin fluids, leading to persistent fever. This is especially taboo during the dry seasons of summer and autumn.
One, for children with severe or chronic illnesses presenting with physical frailty, cyanotic-yellow complexion, white and moist lips and tongue, head shaking with lateral gaze, sleeping with eyes open, emaciation, faint voice and breath, spontaneous and night sweats, or all vomiting and diarrhea, pox/measles/carbuncles, chronic malaria/cough, post-hemorrhagic fatigue, mental exhaustion, reduced milk/food intake, deep and fine pulse patterns, and spiritless six pulses: these are all extreme Deficiency Syndromes. Lamp-attack (fire therapy) is strictly contraindicated, fearing excessive ascending dispersion.
One, for all chronic fevers, Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting), and Gan Syndrome (Infantile Malnutrition) presenting with blackish-thin physique and scorched-dry hair, caused by Yin deficiency and Blood weakness with deficient heat: Misusing lamp-moxibustion will worsen the condition. Be cautious!
One, lamp-moxibustion is crucial in pediatrics. However, modern physicians not only fail to understand the fire acupoints but also fail to differentiate Cold, Heat, Excess, and Deficiency. Using it when inappropriate causes great harm. Only by following the aforementioned differentiation methods can its use be appropriate.
Xia Yuzhu stated: At the onset of Umbilical Wind, sucking implies loose lips. If yellow discoloration suddenly appears near the eyebrows at the inner canthi, urgent treatment is needed and is easiest to cure; if the yellow spreads to the nose, treatment remains easy; if it reaches Renzhong (GV26) and Chengjiang (CV24), treatment becomes slightly difficult, but if the mouth is not puckered and there is slight whistling, it is still treatable. Once the lips and mouth lock tightly and the tongue becomes rigid, treatment is futile. Upon seeing yellow at the glabella and nasal tip, apply one moxa cone at Fontanelle (Baihui/Dazhui area depending on context, here likely referring to anterior fontanelle region), one at Renzhong (GV26), one at Chengjiang (CV24), one at Shaoshang (LU11) on both thumbs, six around the umbilicus, one at the umbilical cord stump before separation, and one at the healing site after separation. Total thirteen cones. The wind will cease and the yellow will recede.
My commentary: Among ancient and modern lamp-moxibustion methods, only the aforementioned full-body regimen has meridians and zang-fu distinctions, principles and methods, surpassing all others. However, the number of points is large. While not difficult for experts in haste, those unpracticed may fail to execute it quickly. Therefore, I append Xia’s Umbilical Wind Fire Diagram here to aid in emergencies. This method has been experienced, though it is less comprehensive than the full-body lamp-moxibustion.
