Malaria, whether new or old, is suitable for taking Pingmie Yangpi Wan (Flat Malaria Spleen-Nourishing Pill). This is a secret recipe passed down in my family.
Treatment involves three stages: initial interception, middle harmonization, and final tonification.
Initial treatment method: If the onset has external causes, regardless of wind-cold, summer-heat, or dampness pathogens, Xiangsu San (Fragrant Perilla Powder) plus Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), and Gancao (Licorice Root) are suitable, with additional Changshan (Dichroa Root) and Wumei (Mume Fruit). Take it at wugeng (5-7 AM) on the day of attack; vomiting is beneficial. This is because the act of vomiting contains the meaning of dispersing, and the disease will not recur. If there are internal causes such as undigested food accumulating into phlegm, which transforms into malaria, Pingwei San (Peace the Stomach Powder) plus Changshan (Dichroa Root), Wumei (Mume Fruit), and Binglang (Areca Seed) are suitable. Take it at wugeng on the day of attack; whether through vomiting or purging, the phlegm accumulation will be completely removed, and the disease will not recur. For non-internal and non-external causes, such as Ke Wu (Guest Malevolence) or Zhong E (Sudden Evil), or nightmares leading to malaria, this is called Xie Nue (Evil Malaria). It is suitable to treat with Sixian Wan (Four Holy Pills) plus Jia Chuan Zhangu Dan (Family-Transmitted Ghost-Slaying Cinnabar). The Ying and Wei Qi (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) of the human body circulate in Yang twenty-five times during the day and in Yin twenty-five times at night. Therefore, malaria that occurs during the day has the pathogen in the Yang aspect and is easy to treat; use the previous methods to intercept it. Malaria occurring at night cannot be intercepted directly; use Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) plus Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root), and Taoren (Peach Kernel) to expel the pathogen from the blood, and it will heal itself. If it does not heal, the pathogen must be lifted to the Yang aspect before interception. Lifting is suitable using Chaihu Siwu Tang (Bupleurum Four Substances Decoction) plus Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) and Gegen (Kudzu Root). Interception is suitable using Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) plus Changshan (Dichroa Root), Binglang (Areca Seed), and Wumei (Mume Fruit).
Middle treatment method: As the pathogen gradually strengthens and the healthy Qi gradually declines, the main approach should be nourishing the healthy and eliminating the pathogen through harmonization. Use Chai Ling Tang (Bupleurum and Pinellia Decoction) as the primary formula. This is a sacred formula for harmonization. After taking three doses, add Changshan (Dichroa Root) and Wumei (Mume Fruit) to eliminate the pathogen. Two parts tonifying and one part attacking, with regular regulation until recovery.
If there is more heat than cold, use Chaihu Baihu Tang (Bupleurum and White Tiger Decoction). If there is more cold than heat, use Chaihu Guizhi Tang (Bupleurum and Cinnamon Twig Decoction). After two doses, intermittently use interception medicines.
For more heat, use Changshan (Dichroa Root), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Caoguo (Black Cardamom), and Binglang (Areca Seed), each 1 qian. For more cold, use 1.5 qian of Changshan (Dichroa Root), 0.5 fen of Dingxiang (Clove), and one Wumei (Mume Fruit) as a dose. Soak each in one zhan of wine overnight, and take at wugeng on the day of attack; it works like magic.
Final treatment method: Malaria that persists for a long time is called Lao Nue (Old Malaria). The pathogen is not yet exhausted, but the healthy Qi is already deficient. Focus solely on nourishing the healthy Qi so that when the healthy Qi is sufficient, the pathogen will naturally disappear. Use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) plus Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), and Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) as the primary formula. For poor appetite, remove Dihuang (Rehmannia Root) and add Shenqu (Medicated Leaven). For those with Nuomu (Malaria Mass), add Qingpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), and Jiulei Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell) to the base formula, taken with vinegar.
In children, if malaria persists for a long time and lumps appear on the left or right side of the abdomen, this is called Nuomu (Malaria Mass), also known as Pi (Masses). This condition persists for years after malaria, often accompanied by tidal fever, resembling malaria, with yellow complexion and abdominal distension. It is suitable to eliminate it. An ancestral formula uses Yuechan Wan (Moon Toad Pill). I have now established Xiaopi Wan (Eliminate Masses Pill).
For children whose chronic malaria has developed into Gan Lao (Infantile Malnutrition and Consumption), use Jisheng Wan (Collecting Sages Pill).
For edema after malaria, use Weiling Wan (Stomach and Five Waters Pill).
For diarrhea and dysentery occurring simultaneously after malaria, use Chai Ling Tang (Bupleurum and Pinellia Decoction) plus Binglang (Areca Seed) and Wumei (Mume Fruit). Generally, Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) treats malaria, and Wu Ling San (Five Ingredient Powder with Poria) treats diarrhea and dysentery; Binglang (Areca Seed) and Wumei (Mume Fruit) are essential drugs for treating dysentery and malaria.
Pingmie Yangpi Wan (Flat Malaria Spleen-Nourishing Pill). This is my family's divine recipe for treating malaria.
Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Baifuling (White Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Banxia Qu (Pinellia Medicated Leaven), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, rice-water soaked and fried), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, juice-fried), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Caoguo (Black Cardamom), Changshan (Dichroa Root), Qingpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Lagui (Cinnamon Bark), and Jiulei Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell, butter-fried) in equal parts. Grind these nineteen ingredients into powder. Prepare on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, or on Tianyuede days during the Three Yuan and Eight Festivals, specifically on auspicious days like An, Pu, Hu, Fu, Sheng, Chu, Kai, and Po. Boil with wine and qu paste to make pills, size of hemp seeds. Take with aged rice soup.
Xiaopi Wan (Eliminate Masses Pill) specializes in treating Nuomu (Malaria Mass), Shi Zheng (Food Retention), Tan Pi (Phlegm Masses), and Pi caused by five fluids.
Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome, fish-shaped ones), Ezhu (Curcuma Rhizome, both vinegar-soaked and fried), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit, bran-fried), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, ginger juice-fried), Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit), Qianliu (Chinese Honeylocust Seed), Yeming Sha (Bat Droppings), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, fried), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, fried) each 2 liang; Haizao (Sargassum Thallus, washed) 0.5 liang; Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), Maiya (Barley Sprout), Banxia Qu (Pinellia Medicated Leaven) each 2 qian; Ganchan (Toad Skin, roasted), Jiulei Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell, vinegar-fried) each 3 qian. Grind into powder, boil with wine and flour paste to make pills, size of hemp seeds. Take with rice drink.
Jia Chuan Zhangu Dan (Family-Transmitted Ghost-Slaying Cinnabar) effectively intercepts malaria.
Hudan (Red Lead Oxide, ground), Dutou Dasuan (Single-clove Garlic, mashed into paste). On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month at noon, prepare with sincerity. Mix garlic paste and cinnabar, pound together, and shape into pills by hand according to the patient's age. On the day of attack at wugeng, take facing east with flowing water.
Sixian Wan (Four Holy Pills) is effective for treating malaria.
Shanjiapia (Pangolin Scales, remove membrane, ash-fried mixed), Jigu Changshan (Chicken-bone Dichroa), Wumei (Mume Fruit, pitted and baked), Binglang (Areca Seed) each 1 liang. Grind into powder, make pills with sticky rice paste, size according to patient's age, coat with Hudan (Red Lead Oxide). Take 25-30 pills each time, facing east with warm wine at wugeng on the day of attack.
Chaihu Guizhi Tang (Bupleurum and Cinnamon Twig Decoction) treats malaria with more cold than heat.
Use Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction): Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) 2.5 qian, Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) and Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) each 1 qian, Renshen (Ginseng Root) 1.5 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) 0.5 fen. Combine with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Shaoyao (Peony Root), plus Gualougen (Trichosanthes Root), Muli (Oyster Shell), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, processed), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Dazao (Jujube). Decoct together.
Chaihu Baihu Tang (Bupleurum and White Tiger Decoction) treats malaria with more heat than cold.
Combine Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction). Shigao (Gypsum) 5 qian, Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) 2 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) 1 qian. Add Jingmi (Rice) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and decoct together.
A child aged one and a half suffered from malaria, recurring every two days, persisting for a long time. The child had a yellow, emaciated face, facial edema, and abdominal distension. I treated him with Pingmie Yangpi Wan (Flat Malaria Spleen-Nourishing Pill), and he recovered.
A child suffered from malaria. A doctor prescribed Chai Ling Tang (Bupleurum and Pinellia Decoction). After regulating for two or three days, there was no effect. I treated him with Pingmie Yangpi Wan (Flat Malaria Spleen-Nourishing Pill), and it was effective.
A child suffered from malaria. A doctor used interception medicines containing Pidans (Arsenic Cinnabar). After three interceptions, it turned into Gan Nue (Malnutrition Malaria). The father regretted the error of the previous medicine. I treated the malaria with Pingmie Yangpi Wan (Flat Malaria Spleen-Nourishing Pill) and the malnutrition with Jisheng Wan (Collecting Sages Pill). After one month of regulation, he recovered.
A girl first suffered from fright, then malaria. The chronic malaria developed into malnutrition. I regulated her with Jisheng Wan (Collecting Sages Pill), and she stabilized within one month.
A child first suffered from malaria, then fright. I treated him with Diaoyuan Tang (Regulating Origin Decoction) and Hupo Baolong Wan (Amber Embracing Dragon Pill), and he stabilized.
A child suffered from malaria, recurring daily. I used Jia Chuan Zhangu Dan (Family-Transmitted Ghost-Slaying Cinnabar) to intercept it. It stopped for three days, then recurred. I intercepted it again. In total, three interceptions resulted in four or three recurrences. The father asked curiously. At that time, it was June or July, and dates were ripe. I suspected he must have eaten raw dates, causing the cessation and subsequent recurrence. Upon inquiry, this was true. I prohibited them. First, I used Weiling Wan (Stomach and Five Waters Pill) to regulate for three days, then used Zhangu Dan (Ghost-Slaying Cinnabar) to intercept it, and he recovered.
Wang Nanting's youngest son, aged seven, suffered from malaria for three years. Various doctors failed to cure him, so they invited me. Observing his external signs, his complexion was yellowish-white, the mountain root was green, and his abdomen was large and hard. I said, "This is chronic malaria forming masses, where the masses cause tidal fever. One should tonify the spleen and eliminate masses; the malaria heat will naturally subside." Unfortunately, we lacked Jiulei Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell). Wang Nanting obtained it, so I formulated a prescription: Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Qingpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome), Ezhu (Curcuma Rhizome), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), and Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell) ground into powder, made into pills with Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) paste. Take with stir-fried rice decoction, three times a day. After fifty-plus days of regulation, he stabilized.
A seven-year-old girl in the Li household at Lu Chenxiang contracted an external pathogen in the autumn of the Wuxu year, which later transformed into malaria. Due to the use of interception medicines, it transformed into dysentery. By winter, although the dysentery stopped, the malaria recurred. She was invited to visit. Observing her external signs, her collarbones were prominent, muscles were sunken, hair was sparse, eyes were sunken, complexion was yellow, nose was dry, and she had no appetite, eating only lotus seeds. This is an internal injury syndrome of spleen deficiency leading to Gan Lao (Infantile Malnutrition and Consumption). At that time, a Jiangxi doctor named Wan Ding was there, saying it was incurable. I said, "Do not worry, I can cure her. She will recover by spring." I prescribed one course of Jisheng Wan (Collecting Sages Pill). Indeed, she stabilized in February of the following year.
A child suffered from malaria, recurring every other day. According to ancestral instructions, I should have used Weiling Wan (Stomach and Five Waters Pill) to tonify. On the day of attack, I used Zhangu Dan (Ghost-Slaying Cinnabar) to intercept. After half a month of regulation, he was gradually improving. Suddenly, a doctor from Macheng arrived. Seeing the child was not fully recovered, he told the father, "My secret recipe cures it in one dose." The father was confused and did not know what prescription he used. After the first dose, the malaria flared up severely, worse than before. I laughed at the doctor, saying, "Using only a secret recipe wastes all my previous efforts and requires further regulation." The father regretted it, blamed the doctor, and dismissed him. I regulated him for one month, and he recovered.
A child suffered from chronic malaria forming masses. Heat arose from the masses, recurring every three to five days, lasting over ten days once started. It usually occurred during Shen and You hours (3-7 PM), without chills. Fear of cold led to fever, but the fever was not severe. After the episode, there was no thirst or headache. I alternated Xiaopi Wan (Eliminate Masses Pill) and Pingmie Yangpi Wan (Flat Malaria Spleen-Nourishing Pill), and he recovered after half a year.
A child suffered from abdominal distension after malaria. He recovered after taking Jiajian Taqi Wan (Modified Collapsing Qi Pill).
