There is sound and material expelled, termed "Ou" (vomiting with sound); dry heaving involves no material expulsion. There is material expelled without sound, termed "Tu" (vomiting without sound). "Ou" refers to vomiting accompanied by sound; "Tu" refers to expulsion without sound. Vomiting refers to the ejection of gastric contents.
This arises from disharmony of Stomach Qi. The Foot-Yangming Meridian belongs to the Stomach's network vessels; Yangming Qi should descend to be in harmony. Now, Qi rebels and ascends, thus causing vomiting. Vomiting differs between Cold-Stomach and Heat-Stomach conditions, and varies between Food-Injury and Stomach-Deficiency patterns. Since the diseases are not uniform, treatments also differ. For all types of vomiting that do not cease, it must be due to injury from milk or food. Generally, regulating breastfeeding is the most important measure. For any vomiting, regardless of cold or heat, if prolonged vomiting does not stop, Stomach Deficiency generates Wind, which may develop into Slow Convulsion syndrome. Prevention is necessary. If Slow Spleen Wind syndrome has already formed, and frequent vomiting of foul-smelling substances occurs, this is a sign that Stomach Qi is about to perish.
In summer, when children play in the sun, latent heat resides in the Stomach. Or, if the mother contracts summerheat and nurses the infant while carrying heat, or if excessive spicy and hot foods are consumed, Heat-Vomiting often results. Symptoms include red face and lips, five-palm heat (heat in palms, soles, and chest), few vomit episodes but large volume per episode, and yellowish color of digested milk curds. The method should involve Separating Yin and Yang, Moving Eight Trigrams, Clearing Lung Meridian (from HT gate to transverse crease), Tonifying Spleen Earth, Rubbing External Lao Gong, Heavy rubbing of Gan Li points, Red Phoenix Shaking Head, and Scooping Bright Moon.
In winter, contracting wind-cold, or if the nursing mother suffers from cold transmitting cold via milk to the infant, cold qi enters the Stomach. Or, consuming raw/cold foods, or injuring stored milk, leads to Stomach Deficiency failing to accept food, milk curds failing to digest, preference for warmth and aversion to cold, cold limbs, many vomit episodes but small volume per episode. The method uses Separating Yin and Yang, Moving Eight Trigrams, Pushing Three Gates, Pushing Lung Meridian, Pushing Spleen Earth, Pushing HT gate to transverse crease, and heavy rubbing of Gan Li points.
If expelled with retained food, vomit will be sour and foul, accompanied by aversion to eating, stomach pain, and tidal fever. The method should involve Separating Yin and Yang, Moving Eight Trigrams, Rubbing Zhong Wan, String Pressing and Rubbing Motion, Rubbing Umbilicus and Gui Wei point, and Tonifying Spleen Earth.
Regarding Empty Vomiting: It is caused by Stomach Qi deficiency, unable to retain milk and food, leading to vomiting. The method should involve Separating Yin and Yang, Moving Eight Trigrams, Pushing Three Gates, heavily Tonifying Spleen Earth, Moving Five Meridians, Moving Earth into Water, and pushing from HT gate to transverse crease.
