Pinch the Heart Meridian. Rotate it counter-clockwise. Pinch the Outer Lao Palace (Wailaogong). Push the Three Gates (Sanguan). Tonify the Spleen Earth (Pitu). Move the Eight Trigrams (Bagua). The syndrome of coughing must arise from a cold invasion. The skin and hair are the exterior correspondence of the Lungs. When pathogens first invade the skin and hair, they follow this correspondence to damage the Lungs, thus causing cough. Taking off clothes when it suddenly warms up, encountering wind in sudden heat, or playing in water while sweat is still wet leads to wind-cold invading and causing cough. At the onset, the face is red, lips are crimson, breathing is coarse, and fever occurs; this is wind-cold invasion. Phlegm obstruction causes coughing. If coughing persists for a long time, body fluids are depleted, and the Lung Meridian becomes deficient. The Lung is the canopy of all organs; when lying down, it opens; when sitting, it closes. Sitting provides slight relief, while lying down causes shortness of breath. This is due to excessive purging of Lung Qi and phlegm, named deficiency cough. One should then tonify the Spleen Earth to benefit Lung Qi. Move Earth into Water, borrowing Earth Qi to generate Metal (Lung), so the cough will heal itself.
Coughing continuously due to wind entering the Lungs; if severe, wheezing and urgency occur with persistent fever. Lung damaged by cold leads to frequent coughing; Lung affected by heat causes hoarseness and stagnation. For cold, induce sweating; for heat, clear it. Excess syndromes should be drained, deficiency syndromes should be tonified. Persistent cough may transform into epilepsy. Profuse phlegm may lead to convulsive disorders. Purple-black eye sockets indicate injury. Coughing with blood is difficult to treat. The general method involves separating Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Clear Heat and Tonify Cold in the Lung Meridian. Rub Ershamen. Move the Five Channels. Shuangren Shangma. Pinch Wuzhijie. Pinch Xiangdao point. Rub Tianshu. Anteriorly rub Danzhong. Posteriorly rub Fengmen. Rub both hands simultaneously. Tonify Spleen Earth. Laterally push the Three Gates. Clear Heat and Tonify Cold in the Heart Meridian. Anxian Zoucuomo. Push from Li upwards stopping at Qian. Clear Middle Deficiency. Rub Feishu acupoint. Grasp Hou Chengshan acupoint. Cyan face with wheezing: Clear the Lung Meridian. Fever: Clear Tianhequ. Retrieve the Moon (Laomingyue) slightly. These are the pushing methods for phlegm-wheezing. The prescription uses Ophiopogon Decoction juice, mixed with rock sugar, boiled in the evening, taken hot the next morning. Five doses result in recovery.
If a child's face and eyes are both red, sneezing frequently, with coarse breathing and body heat, this is Shaoyang Cold (Shanghan). Or limbs are cold, screaming with mouth open, or gurgling phlegm with mouth closed. On the first day of Shanghan, the whole body is feverish, head and brain ache, consciousness is confused, and speech is incoherent. The method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Move the Five Channels. Pinch the Heart Meridian. Rub the Outer Lao Palace. Pinch Yangchi. Push the Three Gates. Rub Ershamen. Huangfeng Rudong. On the second day of Shanghan, chest binding and abdominal distension occur, food stagnation and lethargy, internal heat with external cold, and bone pain throughout the body. The method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Move the Five Channels. Clear the Heart Meridian. Push the Three Gates. Laterally push the Tiger's Mouth (Hukou). Tonify Spleen Earth. Feijin Zouqi. On the third day of Shanghan, bone and joint pain throughout the body, unblocking of large and small intestines, and abdominal distension. The method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Move the Five Channels. Clear Heart and Lung. Feijin Zouqi. Shuanglong Baiwei. Chifeng Yaotou. Shuidi Laomingyue. Move Earth into Water. On the fourth day of Shanghan, leg and waist pain, red eyes and thirst, inability to eat, and mental confusion. The method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Rub Shangtianxin. Clear Heart and Liver. Shuangren Shangma. Laomingyue. Push Spleen Earth. Damaguo Tianhe. On the fifth day of Shanghan, transmission through meridians, either constipation or free urination, or hiccuping and cholera-like disorder. The method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Move the Five Channels. Retreat the Six Fu Organs (Tuiliufu). Shuidi Laomingyue. Fenghuang Danchizhan. On the sixth day of Shanghan, Qi and Blood deficiency, inability to eat, waist pain and wheezing, heartache and headache. The method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Tianmen Ru Hukou Zhou. Push the Three Gates. Tonify Spleen Earth. Pinch Yangchi. Chifeng Yaotou. On the seventh day of Shanghan, transmission through the Six Meridians, dispersal to the four limbs, each transmitting through meridians, or dysentery or malaria. Adjust pushing accordingly. The method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Clear Tianhequ. Erlong Xizhu. He Yin Yang. Pinch Sihengwen. Push Spleen Earth. Push the Three Gates. Laterally push Large Intestine. To treat pediatric wind-cold cold with headache, inducing sweat is primary, as wind and cold disperse with sweat. The method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Push the Three Gates. Rub Ershamen. Pinch Yangchi. Huangfeng Rudong. To treat pediatric Yin-Cold, inducing sweat is especially appropriate. After sweating, one must hide deeply and avoid wind, fearing re-invasion due to sweat. The method is the same as above. To treat pediatric grinding teeth, the method should separate Yin and Yang. Move the Eight Trigrams. Push the Three Gates. Tonify Kidney Water.
