Kidney Water (Shen Shui) is located on the lateral side of the little finger, extending from the fingertip to the Yinchi area. It belongs to the Small Intestine and Kidney Water system. Pushing inward constitutes the tonification method (Bu), while pushing outward constitutes the clearing method (Qing). The clearing method is indicated for children with dark yellow urine; the tonification method is indicated for deficiency of Kidney Water. Clearing eliminates heat in the Zang-Fu organs, while tonifying addresses oliguria (shortage of urine).
Liver Wood (Gan Mu) is located on the index finger. The Liver corresponds to Wood in the Five Elements, and Wood generates Fire. Excessive Liver Fire disturbs the body, causing blurred vision and closed eyes. The therapeutic principle should be to clear. Most diseases originate from Fire, and the most balanced state of a person is when the Liver Qi is harmonious. If Liver Fire is excessive, it damages the Spleen; therefore, after reducing heat in the Liver channel, tonifying Spleen Earth is essential.
(It is suitable to clear but not to tonify this point; tonification is detrimental to the patient, so remember this well.)
The Heart point is located on the middle finger. The base of the finger corresponds to the Li position, and the Heart corresponds to Fire in the Five Elements. Whenever Heart Fire is active, manifesting as mouth ulcers, tongue protrusion, redness of the inner and outer canthi of the eyes, and urinary retention, these symptoms are suitable for pushing to clear the Heart. For convulsions due to fright, clearing this point is also appropriate. Pinching the first segment inside the Heart meridian can stop vomiting.
Lung Metal (Fei Jin) is located on the ring finger. The Lung governs Qi. This point stops coughing and resolves phlegm, with a mild nature. Wind-Cold invading the lungs inevitably causes coughing, and injury by Heat also causes coughing. Heat patterns require clearing, Cold patterns also require clearing, but only Deficiency patterns require tonification. Furthermore, tonification should follow clearing. For any pediatric cough with phlegm and wheezing, this point must be pushed; for fright, this point must also be pushed.
"Li" is located below the base of the ring finger (Jiang Zhi). "Qian" is located to the left of the "Er Ren Shang Ma" point. Using my thumb, push from the child's Li Palace to the Qian Palace, drawing a circle. The pressure on Li and Qian should be heavy, while the middle part should be light and empty. For males, use the left hand; for females, the right hand. This method is primarily used after pinching the lung meridian segments for coughs due to wind exposure or vomiting/regurgitation.
"Er Ren" refers to my index and middle fingers. "Shang Ma" refers to: placing the tip of my thumb beside the Shenmen point on the child, and simultaneously placing the tip of my index finger beside the transverse crease at the root of the child's little finger. Pinching here clears and tonifies Kidney Water and treats various Qi disorders of the Small Intestine with excellent efficacy. If only one segment of the transverse crease of Kidney Water is pinched, tidal fever subsides immediately. It also revives Stomach Qi and lifts sinking Qi. Counter-clockwise rotation generates coolness, while clockwise rotation generates heat.
Si Heng Wen (Four Transverse Creases) are located at the transverse creases at the roots of the index, ring, and little fingers. Also known as Xiao Heng Wen (Small Transverse Crease), "small" distinguishes it from the larger crease below. "Four" refers to these four fingers. The pinching method involves using my thumb to pinch the acupoint; press until the depression does not rebound immediately, move the finger slightly, but maintain a count. The number of times corresponds to the counts used in Tu Yun (pushing and rubbing) techniques. This is indicated for heat in the Zang-Fu organs causing deviation of the mouth and eyes, and cracked lips. Pinching this point reduces heat, relieves irritability, and stops abdominal pain.
