Treating Shanghan (Cold Damage), treating carbuncles and promoting lactation, all involve attacking heat pathogens; therefore, they can be used if there is no interior cold syndrome. If there is interior cold, manifested by high fever without thirst, loose stools instead of constipation, urine not red, a bluish-white complexion, normal white of the eyes, and eyes neither yellow nor red, these are signs of interior cold. Although Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) in the formula warms, it is ultimately used for deficiency-heat syndromes. When human Zang-Fu organs are cold, cold-natured medicines take effect first, while hot-natured medicines may not control it; when Zang-Fu organs are hot, hot-natured medicines take effect first, while cold-natured medicines may not control it. This is the natural course of events. How can one prescribe medicine without distinguishing between exterior/interior and cold/heat? The *Heji Ju Fang* states that for pediatric Shanghan with high fever, this formula (Xingxing San) should be taken first for great efficacy, followed by Qianghuo San. If high fever persists, do not administer laxatives or cooling medicines, lest it be a rash eruption, which would lead to misprescription.
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, leaves removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried), Baifuling (Poria, peel removed), Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1.5 liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 1 zhan of water, add 2 leaves of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), decoct together until 0.3 zhan remains, filter dregs, and take warm. To harmonize Qi, add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and decoct; time is not restricted. Do not use if there is high fever but spontaneous loose stools.
Haicang said: Xingxing San treats Wind-Heat, throat obstruction, Spleen disharmony, Shaoyang thirst, and difficult urination.
Jingjie San treats Measles and smallpox with itching, or Urticaria, with normal bowel movements.
Take a small amount of Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), crush and grind well. Filter through cloth using fresh well water, add a drop of Mahua oil (Sesami Oleum), mix well, and let the child drink. This prevents confusion or coma. Once measles/smallpox have erupted, boil Huangla (Cera Flava) with Qingjiaoshui (Bovis Colla, i.e., Ox Hide Glue) for the child to drink, and the condition will stabilize. Jingjie treats Blood-Wind; "Ma" refers to rashes. Commonly called Wind-pruritus and Urticaria, these erupt on the skin; their pathogenic factors are light and superficial. Using Mahua oil to mix facilitates opening orifices. Taking Huangla boiled with Qingjiaoshua nourishes Blood and regulates Ying and Wei. Once Ying and Wei are smooth, measles/rashes will erupt. The Jingjie Tang in *Zhimi Fang* is Xiaodu Yin (Detoxification Decoction) with added Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba).
Qianghuo San resolves heat and disperses toxicity, treating Wind congestion and impending eruptions of sores/rashes.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, honey-fried), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (equal parts).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 0.3 zhan of water and 3 leaves of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), decoct in a cup until 0.2 zhan remains, take orally at once, adjusting water volume according to age. Analyzing its ingredients, it treats Wind, Cold, fright, phlegm, cools the Spleen, treats Blood-Heat, and penetrates the muscle layer. It treats all conditions caused by excess Heat. However, if the constitution is weak, Spleen/Stomach is deficient, or there is external heat with blueish whites of the eyes (indicating no internal heat), do not use lightly.
Bohe San is suitable when a child first suspects a rash eruption.
Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (1 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 1 zhong of water, 2 Jujubes (Ziziphi Spinosae Fructus), and 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decoct together until 0.6 zhong remains, filter dregs, cool to warm, and take twice or three times daily. This is suitable for children with excessive endowment and severe toxic factors. As the formula states: take it as soon as rash/smallpox is suspected. If sweating occurs after taking it, take Tiao Zhong San. If taking Bohe San results in alternating chills and fever with a slow pulse, administer Tuochi San to warm. Theoretically, this is not a purgative method; taking it for excess patterns may not bring peace, and using it for deficiency patterns is dangerous.
Shensu Yin (Formula seen in Acute Fright section), Renshen Qianghuo San (Formula seen in Acute Fright section).
Qianghuo San: Use temporarily during initial heat, also treats convulsions.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (1.2 qian), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) (each 0.8 qian), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.4 qian), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (0.1 qian).
Add 3 leaves of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), 1 zhong of water, decoct to 0.5 zhong, take anytime. For convulsions and persistent high heat, take temporarily. After decoction, mix with processed Shazhong (Sandarac) and take; it is miraculous for treating convulsions.
Renshen Baidu San treats Wind-Cold injury, plague, Wind-Dampness, dizziness of head and eyes, limb pain, aversion to cold with high fever, stiff neck, and eye pain.
It also treats common wind-induced dizziness and fatigue, body/neck pain from Wind-Phlegm, cough, nasal congestion, heavy voice with chills/fever.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fuling (Poria), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba).
Li's Baidu San treats initial high heat and similar syndromes.
This is the previous Baidu San plus Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Zicao (Lithospermi Radix).
Remove Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma).
If heat is severe, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). In summer, add Xiangru (Elsholtziae Herba). In winter, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba). For diarrhea, add Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma).
Decoct with 1 slice of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and water. Before taking, add 5 teaspoons of Congbai juice (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus).
Zhengqi San
Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (0.35 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba, stems removed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 0.5 qian), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, ginger-processed), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, ginger-processed) (each 1.5 qian).
Cut finely, make one dose. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and 1 Jujube (Ziziphi Spinosae Fructus), decoct with water and take.
Tiaojie San
Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, bran-fried), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, remove rhizome, fry), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed seven times), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (each 0.4 qian), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma), Zisu (Perillae Folium) (each 0.2 qian).
Cut finely, make one dose. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and 1 Jujube (Ziziphi Spinosae Fructus), decoct with water and take. One variation adds Zicao (Lithospermi Radix) and Nuomi (Oryzae Sativae Confractio glutinosi).
Sujie San treats initial high heat of smallpox, headache, lower back pain, abdominal distension/pain, and any severe heat-toxin conditions.
Zisu (Perillae Folium), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Zicao (Lithospermi Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts).
Add 7 stalks of Dengxin (Junci Medulla) and 7 roots of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), decoct with water, and take hot.
Hejie Tang harmonizes the exterior and middle.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (each 1.5 qian), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (1 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 0.7 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (0.8 qian), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian).
Decoct with 1 slice of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and water, and take.
The above seventeen formulas are moderate exterior-releasing agents.
Wang Chaofeng Siwu Jieji Tang
Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix).
Take 4 qian per dose, with 1 zhan of water, decoct to 0.7 zhan, filter dregs, and take. Some say: for pediatric Shanghan/plague, tidal fever, and rash eruptions where symptoms decline after five days and differentiation is difficult, regulate with acrid-cool agents, such as Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to release the muscle layer. Haicang said: This discussion implies an exterior syndrome. If there is internal injury with abdominal mass and no bowel movement causing fever, use food-medicines to remove the mass. If fever persists on the exterior after bowel movement, this Jieji Tang is suitable. Compared to Qianyi's Shengma Gegen Tang, it reduces Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) and adds Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) to address exterior heat.
Fangfeng Cangzhu Tang treats pediatric exterior pathogenic heat, aversion to wind/cold, and unruptured rashes; it releases the exterior and induces eruption.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (each 0.5 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 liang), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 2 liang).

[Cool Blood and Detoxify]
Xijiao Dihuang Tang (for bleeding), Xiaodu Yin (for throat).
Daimao Tang treats epidemic pea-pox and red rashes. Prevents eruption by resolving internally; if erupted, resolves toxicity to prevent severity.
Raw Daimao (Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum), Raw Xijiao (Rhino CeratUs) (each grind thickly in cold water to obtain 2 he of juice).
Stir evenly. Take 0.5 he per dose, take slightly warm. 4-5 times daily is best.
Also treats cases where eruption is slow. Furthermore: if toxins attack inward, appearing purple-black and slow to erupt, use 1 he of thick Daimao water-grind juice, add 1 soap-sized piece of Zhu Xin Xue (Porcinis Cor Sanguis), and mix with thick Zicao decoction (Lithospermi Radix). Take as one dose. Daimao and Xijiao are slightly cold; treating heat-toxin with them is appropriate. Both treat plague/miasma, resolve hundred toxins, unblock vessels, reduce abscesses/swelling. Thus, they resolve accumulated toxins and are suitable.
Xijiao Yinzi resolves heat-toxin, removes Wind-rash.
Xijiao (Rhino CeratUs), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (each 0.5 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (1 liang).

After sores recede, apply thick-ground Xijiao water topically for better effect. Qianyi also attached this formula to treat excessive rashes preventing eye involvement, named Tiaogan San. This formula treats Wind-excess with Qi-stagnation, Heart/Liver Blood-Heat, internal dryness of fluids, constipation, upward excess of toxins, and unresolved exterior heat. Dahuang and Gualou treat internal dryness; Gouteng and Longdancao treat Wind-Blood-Heat; Sangbaipi and Shigao treat Upper Jiao heat; Mahuang and Huangqin dissipate muscle heat; Xijiao and Gancao detoxify. Generally, medication must match the disease; then disease goes and healthy Qi returns. Otherwise, it causes harm. For example, Xijiao San should only be taken if there is multi-day constipation, panting/confusion, irritability, and delirium; otherwise, disease and medicine do not match.
Duoming San treats rashes whether erupted or not; both situations benefit.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Nuomi (Oryzae Sativae Confractio glutinosi), Zicao (Lithospermi Radix), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (2.5 qian).

In winter, abnormal warmth, or spring warmth, or overeating rich/greasy food, or wearing heavy/warm clothes, or tight curtains damaging skin/blood vessels, causing yellow sores and many diseases, it is advisable to take this regularly in advance.
Dusheng San treats pediatric smallpox/measles starting with slight morning heat, severe evening heat, yellow eyes, moving ribs, body heat with cold hands, and severe eruption resembling fright. Also named Niubang Jiangcan San.
Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus) (0.5 liang), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (0.1 fen).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 1 large qian per dose, with 0.6 zhan of water and 2-7 cun of Zicao (Lithospermi Radix), decoct to 0.4 zhan. Take three consecutive doses; smallpox will erupt. Niubangzi expels pus and penetrates muscle; Baijiangcan treats generalized Urticaria and painful sores. Taken as powder with wine, recovery is immediate. Alternatively, decoct with Zicao (Lithospermi Radix) to open orifices; since rash syndromes have no deficiency-cold types, taking this causes immediate eruption.
Jiedu Shudou Tang taken in advance to resolve heat and remove toxin. If erupted, resolves heat-toxin/rash; also treats red/purple dry mouth, high fever, and delirium.
