[Qian] Vomiting immediately after birth in infants is caused by the swallowing of foul and impure substances. The primary treatment is Mugua Wan (Quince Pill). For all newborns, it is urgent to thoroughly clean the mouth; otherwise, upon crying, impurities will be swallowed, leading to various diseases.
[Tian] For vomiting occurring within the first month of life, first use Zhusha Wan (Cinnabar Pill) to purge. If purgation occurs, follow with Zhuchen Jian (Cinnabar and Lead Decoction) to descend the pathogenic qi, allowing impurities to pass naturally without vomiting.
[Qian] Mugua Wan (Quince Pill):
Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Shexiang (Musk), Nifen (Calomel), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Binglang (Areca Seed) (equal parts).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Use wheat paste to form pills the size of small millet grains. Administer one or two pills per dose, taken with Licorice Water (Gancao Shui), at any time.
[Xue] Illnesses affecting newborns often arise because the nursing mother fails to regulate her emotions (Seven Emotions: joy, anger, worry, thought, sadness, fear, fright) or does not moderate her consumption of rich and heavy foods, transmitting the pathology to the infant. One should investigate the cause and treat the mother. The previously mentioned medications may be too harsh for the infant's fragile and tender zang-fu organs; practitioners must exercise caution.
Huoxiang San (Agastache Powder) from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*: Treats persistent vomiting and regurgitation in infants from birth up to half a month old.
Ingredients: Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), Ziwan (Aster Root) (washed to remove roots and soil, 1 fen each), Gancao (Licorice Root) (honey-fried until reddish-brown, 0.5 liang), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (3 fen, heart removed, dried), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) (0.5 fen).
Process the above into a powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct with 1 sheng of water down to 0.5 sheng. Strain the dregs. Warm the liquid and apply dropwise into the mouth using cotton wool.
Infants who do not urinate after birth often suffer because, during gestation, the mother indulged in excessive eating, allowing heat-toxin qi to enter the womb. The fetus ingests this contaminated blood, resulting in abdominal distension and swelling around the umbilicus after birth. If bluish-black discoloration appears around the umbilicus accompanied by "kou cuo" (contracted lips/mouth), the condition is incurable. If there is no bluish-black coloration and the infant can suckle milk, Congru Tang (Scallion and Milk Decoction) is indicated.
Congru Tang (Scallion and Milk Decoction):
Take scallion whites 3-4 cun long, cut them into four sections. Decoct in half a sheng of milk and administer. Another method: use raw scallions, mash them, mix with human milk, place in the infant's mouth, and allow the infant to suckle again. Swallowing will promote urination.
Douchi Gao (Fermented Soybean Paste):
Heidou (Black Soybean) (1 spoon), Tianluo (Field Snail) (19 pieces), Cong (Scallion) (one large handful).
Mash all ingredients thoroughly. Mix with Bajiao Zhi (Banana Juice) and apply as a plaster below the umbilicus.
Commentary: Observing Danxi’s treatment of the son of Commissioner Zheng Lian, who suffered from Lin syndrome (dysuria/painful urinary frequency), reveals that the cause was the father’s ingestion of lower-jiao heating herbs, leaving residual toxins in the womb that remained in the child's Mingmen (Gate of Life). Treatment with Zixue (Purple Snow) and Huangbai end (Phellodendron Bark powder) formed into pills resulted in the passage of approximately one bowl of gravel-like stones, bringing relief. Thus, for the condition of newborn non-urination, it is self-evident that one must examine the etiology and treat accordingly.
