The clinical manifestations of Manpi Feng (Slow Spleen Wind) include: a bluish complexion, sweating on the forehead, a short tongue, a drooping head, eyes closed and unable to open, shaking the head and sticking out the tongue during sleep, frequent vomiting of foul-smelling fluids, locked jaw with teeth grinding, mild twitching of the hands and feet that cannot be voluntarily controlled, or a cold body or slightly warm body but cold limbs, with a deep and faint pulse. This indicates extreme excess of Yin Qi and extreme deficiency of Stomach Qi; only one or two out of ten can be saved. This condition usually arises after Man Jing Feng (Slow Convulsion Wind), where vomiting and diarrhea damage the Spleen Qi. The disease has progressed to an extreme stage, ultimately returning to deficiency, affecting primarily the Spleen, hence it is called Spleen Wind. At this stage, attempting to dispel wind finds no wind to dispel; attempting to treat convulsions finds no convulsions to treat. It is merely phlegm-fluids stagnating in the Spleen with alternating deficient heat. Those with closed eyes are due to Spleen exhaustion and lack of Qi, causing the spirit and consciousness to be lethargic and phlegm-fluids to coagulate.
However, "Manpi" is also known as "Xu Feng" (Deficient Wind). After vomiting or diarrhea, if a child presents with a sallow complexion, fever due to deficiency, and initially shows symptoms such as head shaking, squinting, lethargy, sweating on the forehead, sticky sweat on the body, and a low, weak, and parched voice, these are signs of Spleen Wind. It does not necessarily result from the transmission of Ji Jing Feng (Acute Convulsion Wind) or Man Jing Feng; this point must be recognized.
Furthermore, why does the description of Manpi Feng mention only the Spleen and not the Stomach? Because the Stomach belongs to the Fu organs and is Yang, unlike the Spleen which is a Zang organ. Therefore, diseases in the Fu organs often resolve spontaneously, while those in the Zang organs require treatment. Children possess pure Yang Qi; disease in the Fu organs is a favorable progression, while in the Zang organs it is unfavorable. Ancient physicians focused on treating the Zang organs, not the Fu organs.
Additionally, the Kidney is a Zang organ often associated with deficiency and should not be treated with purgative methods. If there is pathology in the Kidney, one should only clear the Heart and moisten the Lungs. This is because the Heart and Kidney share a relationship of Water and Fire interaction (Ji Ji), and the Lung and Kidney share a mother-son relationship. Medicines for tonifying the Kidney and various tonic agents should not be used.
Manpi Feng is typically transmitted through vomiting, diarrhea, food accumulation, or dysentery. The symptoms of Manpi Feng change rapidly, and the deficiency progresses quickly. Treatment must follow a gradual and balanced approach; there is no principle of rapid cure. Medications should be mild and gentle to harmonize the Spleen and nourish the Stomach, avoiding excessive dosages. Qian Yi (Qian Shi) created Huang Tu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction) to use Earth to overcome Water, thereby balancing Wood, so that wind stops naturally. This treatment is based on the Spleen Earth as the root.
The general treatment principle involves generating Stomach Qi and restoring Yang. If the patient's eyes are half-open and half-closed, and the hands and feet are not cold, the condition remains in the stage of Man Jing Feng, so Yang-restoring drugs should not be used. Or, if the condition has entered Manpi Feng but Yang Qi has not severely collapsed, sulfur and Aconite preparations should not be used immediately. Once the hands and feet gradually warm up, use Xing Pi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder) and similar formulas for regulation.
Zeng Shirong (Zeng Shi) used Qing Jin Dan (Green Pill Elixir) and Tian Ma Yin (Gastrodia Drink) administered orally, or Liu Zhu San (Six Pillar Powder) and Gu Zhen Tang (Solidify True Decoction).
[Formulas by Qian Yi]
Gua Lou Tang (Trichosanthes Decoction)
Gua Lou (2 qian) Bai Gan Sui (powder, 1 qian)
Stir-fry the above ingredients together over slow fire until scorched yellow, then grind evenly. Take one zi dose each time, mixed with Moschus (She Xiang), Bo He (Mint), and taken with decocted water.
The above Gua Lou Tang is Qian Yi's method for treating Man Jing Feng, suitable for patients with a forceful pulse. This is because damp-phlegm accumulates in the diaphragm, preventing wind-fire from dispersing, leading to coldness of the body. Thus, Gua Lou Tang is used to forcefully remove damp-phlegm, allowing wind-fire to expand, warming the body and stopping convulsions. If the pulse is weak, it should not be used; instead, tonify the Spleen and administer Wen Bai Wan (Warm White Pill) or Qiang Huo Gao (Notopterygium Paste).
Qing Zhou Bai Wan Zi (Qingzhou White Pills) Treat pediatric convulsion wind and various wind disorders in adults.
Ban Xia (Raw, 7 liang) Nan Xing (Raw, 3 liang) Bai Fu Zi (Raw, 2 liang) Chuan Wu (Raw, 0.5 liang, peeled and umbilicus removed)
Grind into powder. Place in a raw silk bag and wash with well water by agitation. If residue remains, rub by hand to extract further. If dregs remain, grind again, re-enter the silk bag, and wash until complete. Sun-dry by day and dew-expose by night in a porcelain basin. By morning, discard old water, stir with fresh well water, and sun-dry again. Repeat this process: Spring 5 days, Summer 3 days, Autumn 7 days, Winter 10 days. Remove water and dry until the texture resembles jade flakes. Grind finely, mix with rice gruel liquid to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 3-5 pills each time, washed down with Mint tea. For Tan Feng (Paralytic Wind), take with wine. No specific timing.
Yi Gong San (Extraordinary Merit Powder) Warms and harmonizes Qi, treats vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. (Formula see Vomiting and Diarrhea section.)
Wen Bai Wan (Warm White Pill) Treats pediatric Spleen Qi deficiency and exhaustion, diarrhea, emaciation, cold Gan syndrome with loose stools, and Man Jing Feng convulsions resulting from vomiting, diarrhea, or chronic illness.

Grind into powder. Soak Han Shi Mian (Cold Food Flour) in water to make a paste, mix with flour to form pills the size of mung beans. Cultivate in Cold Food Flour paste for seven days, then take out for use. Take 5-7 pills, up to 20-30 pills, on an empty stomach, washed down with Ginger and Rice Drink. Gradually increase the number of pills according to the severity of the condition. (Han Shi Mian refers to noodles cooked on Cold Food Day, taken out and dried for storage.)
Diao Teng Yin Zi (Uncaria Infusion) Treats vomiting and diarrhea, weak Spleen and Stomach Qi, Xu Feng (Deficient Wind) and Man Jing Feng.
Diao Teng (7.5 qian) Chan Ke (Cicada Slough) Fang Feng (De-radicle) Ren Shen (De-radicle) Ma Huang (De-jointed) Bai Jiang Can (Fried yellow) Tian Ma Xie Wei (Fried, de-toxified. Each 0.5 liang) Gan Cao (Roasted) Chuan Xiong (Each 2.5 qian) She Xiang (Moschus, 1 qian, separately ground)

Xing Pi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder) For lethargy and fatigue.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala) Ren Shen (Ginseng) Gan Cao (Licorice) Ju Hong (Tangerine Peel Red Layer) Fu Ling (Poria) Quan Xie (Whole Scorpion. Each 0.5 liang) Ban Xia (Pinellia) Mu Xiang (Costus Root. Each 1 fen) Bai Fu Zi (Pao/Processed, four pieces) Nan Xing (Pao/Processed, two pieces) Chen Cang Mi (Stored Barn Rice, 200 grains. Alternative: omit Bai Zhu and Ban Xia, add 1 qian Lotus Seed. Also acceptable)
Grind into powder. Take 1 qian each time, add half a zhan of water, two slices of ginger, half a date, decoct to 0.2 zhan. Take gradually in small amounts. Do not take all at once, as it will cause vomiting.
Niang Ru Fang (Breast-Nourishing Formula)
Ren Shen (Ginseng) Mu Xiang (Costus Root) Huo Xiang (Patchouli) Chen Xiang (Agarwood) Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel) Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) Mai Ya (Malt. Equal parts) Ding Xiang (Clove. Half amount)
Cut into small pieces. Take 4 qian each time, add one bowl of water, ten slices of ginger, ten leaves of Zi Su (Perilla), three dates, decoct to half a bowl. After the lactating mother eats milk, she must completely empty her breasts, then take the medicine. Lie supine for a moment to allow the medicine to enter the milk collaterals, then let the infant suck a few mouthfuls. Do not overfeed. This is an excellent method. If vomiting stops for one day, urgently use Ba Xian San to stop wind. After two days, use Xing Pi San. If the aforementioned medicines are ineffective and the condition is critical and worrying, examine the Tai Chong pulse. If not absent, moxa one point: Bai Hui (Convergence Point), located at the midpoint between the anterior/posterior hairlines and the tips of both ears. The *Fang Shu* states it is in the whorl of hair on the vertex, which is imprecise, as some have double vertices or misaligned whorls. Quack doctors following old texts have misled many. After moxibustion, immediately control phlegm-saliva. Use Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi powder, decoct into a thin paste, mix with refined honey and Duo Ming San. After a while, when phlegm-saliva flows down, finely grind Ling Sha (Spirit Cinnabar), mix with rice drink, apply to the mouth gradually, observing the regression of symptoms. If wind is excessive, take Ba Xian San; if lethargic, take Xing Pi San. Frequently reduce breastfeeding. The lactating mother takes Niang Ru medicine. With such regulation, recovery is assured. In rare cases of weak constitution or insufficient Five Elements numbers, even divine healers cannot alter destiny. If phlegm-saliva has moved from the diaphragm but remains in the throat making a sawing sound, medication cannot enter, nor can it be controlled to expel. Use another method to lift it, induce sneezing by insufflating the nose, then take Duo Ming San to prevent recurrence.
Liao Tan Fang (Phlegm-Lifting Formula)
Chuan Wu Jian (Tip of Sichuan Aconite) Bai Fu Jian (Tip of White Asarum. Each seven pieces, peeled, raw use) Xie Shao (Scorpion Tail Tip, seven pieces) Shi Lv (Malachite, a little)
Grind into powder, mix evenly. Dip a soft chicken feather in the medicine, insert into the throat and slowly withdraw. Wipe frequently with a cloth.
The above is Tang's method for treating Man Jing Feng. First use Duo Ming San and Bai Wan Zi to control phlegm-saliva. After phlegm-saliva is expelled once, use Ba Xian and Xing Pi San. Wait a while, let the lactating mother use the Niang Ru method. For critical cases, use moxibustion on Bai Hui and the Liao Tan method. However, Duo Ming San uses Meng Shi (Lapis Lazuli), which is difficult to use for Qi deficiency. It must be taken jointly with Dong Yuan's Yi Huang San. This is acceptable.
[Method by Chen]
To treat Man Jing Feng, first take Xiong Xie San (Ligusticum and Scorpion Powder), use manual techniques to extract cold-phlegm and cold-saliva, so that mental dullness ceases. Then take You Zhu Gao (Oil Drop Ointment), followed by Yi Zhen Tang (Benefit True Decoction) to warm and strengthen Yuan Qi. Frequently take Qian Po San (Front Magnolia Powder) to widen the upper and solidify the lower.
Xiong Xie San (Ligusticum and Scorpion Powder) Treats pediatric brain marrow affected by wind, fontanelle opening, tight swelling of skin/flesh/tendons/muscles, blue veins rising at cranial sutures, pale complexion, abdominal gas sounds, occasional passage of green-white frothy stool, or vomiting of phlegm-saliva, impending Man Jing Feng convulsions, and cold calves.
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum) Bi Bo (Long Pepper. Each 1 liang) Xi Xin (Asarum) Ban Xia (Pinellia, soaked in wine overnight, washed, dried. Each 2 qian) Xie Shao (Scorpion Tail Tip, de-toxified, 1 qian)
Grind into fine powder. For a one-week-old infant, take an amount equivalent to a copper coin, mix with several boils of hot water, slightly warm, take on an empty stomach. If phlegm fills the chest and throat, eyes squint, administer quickly. If eyes stare upward without moving, it is difficult to save. If phlegm-Qi blocks and swallowing is impossible, insert one finger into the infant's throat dimple to manually extract phlegm-saliva. Once Qi flow improves, subsequently use Bu Pi Yi Zhen Tang (Tonify Spleen Benefit True Decoction), or select You Zhu Gao. This formula has saved countless lives over generations.
You Zhu Gao (Oil Drop Ointment) Treats rebellious Qi with vomiting, wind-phlegm causing convulsions.
Shi Ting Li (Pyrite, wax-like selection from sulfur) Hua Shi (Talc. Each 0.5 liang) Hei Fu Zi (Black Aconite, processed, peeled and umbilicus removed) Ban Xia (Pinellia, soaked in wine overnight, washed seven times, dried) Nan Xing (Arisaema, soaked in vinegar overnight, washed seven times, dried. Each 1 qian)
Grind into fine powder. Take 1 qian each time, add half a zhan of cold clear vegetable juice, drop one coin-sized amount of sesame oil, place the medicine on the oil drop. After a moment it sinks, discard the vegetable juice, give to the infant. Swallow with 3-5 mouthfuls of clear vegetable juice. Take on an empty stomach. One hour after taking, provide milk/food.
Bu Pi Yi Zhen Tang (Tonify Spleen Benefit True Decoction) Treats fetal weakness, vomiting milk with clear stool, becoming Yin Epilepsy, rebellious Qi with phlegm-tide, upward staring of eyes, limb twitching. Or caused by Bian Zheng (Transformation Evaporation), Ke Wu (Guest Malevolence), or accidental ingestion of cooling medicines after fright.
Mu Xiang (Costus Root) Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) Ren Shen (Ginseng) Huang Qi (Astragalus) Ding Xiang (Clove) He Zi (Chebula) Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) Hou Po (Magnolia Bark, ginger-processed) Gan Cao (Licorice, roasted) Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg, wrapped in flour, baked) Cao Guo (Black Cardamom) Fu Ling (Poria) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) Ban Xia (Pinellia, soaked in water) Fu Zi (Aconite, processed. Each 0.5 liang) Quan Xie (Whole Scorpion, fried, add one piece per dose)
Cut into small pieces. Take 3 qian each time, add 1.5 zhan of water, one slice of ginger, one date, decoct to 0.6 zhan, slightly warm, take on an empty stomach. After taking, massage the heart and abdomen to assist medicinal power. Wait one hour before providing milk/food. For thirst, add Fu Ling, Ren Shen, Gan Cao; remove Fu Zi, Ding Xiang, Rou Dou Kou. For diarrhea, add Ding Xiang, He Zi Rou (Chebula Flesh). For vomiting, add Ding Xiang, Ban Xia, Chen Pi. For abdominal pain, add Hou Po, Liang Jiang (Galangal). For cough, add Qian Hu (Peucedanum), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra); remove Fu Zi, Guan Gui (Cassia), Cao Guo, Rou Dou Kou. For cold feet, add Fu Zi, Ding Xiang, Hou Po. For aversion to wind and spontaneous sweating, add Huang Qi, Guan Gui. For phlegm wheezing, add Qian Hu, Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria); remove Fu Zi, Ding Xiang, Rou Dou Kou, Cao Guo. For rebellious Qi not descending, add Qian Hu, Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange), Bing Lang (Areca Seed); remove Dang Gui, Fu Zi, Rou Dou Kou. For abdominal distension, add Hou Po, Ding Xiang, Qian Hu, Zhi Ke.
Qian Po San (Front Magnolia Powder) Treats knotting of Qi in heart/abdomen, hiccups/vomiting/diarrhea, abdominal distension/pain, palpitations.
Qian Hu (Peucedanum) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) Ren Shen (Ginseng) Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) Liang Jiang (Galangal) Huo Xiang (Patchouli) Gan Cao (Licorice) Hou Po (Magnolia Bark. Equal parts)
Cut. Take 3 qian each time, add one zhan of water, decoct to 0.7 zhan, slightly warm, take on an empty stomach.
If a child accidentally ingests cooling medicines, or has water-soaked cloth wrung into the mouth, damaging Spleen/Stomach, resulting in diarrhea, abdominal distension, or abdominal rumbling. Child has pale complexion, rarely smiles, looks down rather than up. Fontanelle high and tense, blue veins at cranial sutures, occasional passage of green stool. Child is plump, stool like clear鼻涕 (nasal mucus) or frozen juice. Child blinks frequently, stool is green-white froth, sometimes dry and hard. Among the above five syndromes, sudden vomiting inevitably leads to Yin Epilepsy, commonly known as Man Jing Feng. Although the child's head is hot, eyes are green-white and feet are cold. Or abdominal distension with cold feet. Or diarrhea with cold feet. Or vomiting with cold feet. Or thirst with cold feet. (Head heat, red eyes, phlegm blocking nose/throat/pharynx are all rootless fire rebellion.) Among the above five syndromes, sudden vomiting with convulsions is named Manpi Feng. Quickly administer one dose of Bu Pi Yi Zhen Tang, 3 qian plus one scorpion. If convulsions are due to fright, administer one dose of Qian Po San, 3 qian plus 0.5 qian each of Fu Zi and Qian Hu, decoct together.
The above is Chen Wenzhong's method for treating Man Jing Feng. Its sequence of treatment forms a unique school, thus recorded separately for reference. His medical records state that Xiong Xie San and You Zhu Gao repeatedly achieved efficacy.
