*Chishi Bingyuan: Pediatric Diarrhea with Thirst Syndrome* states: This is water-grain diarrhea where body fluids are depleted, causing deficiency and dryness in the fu organs, leading to thirst. If urination is smooth, the diarrhea stops, and thirst ceases.
If urination is obstructed, water cannot flow through the small intestine but seeps into the intestines and stomach, so thirst does not cease, nor does the diarrhea. In such cases, the body swells because the spleen qi is weak and cannot control water retention. There will also be eye pain and cataracts because children naturally have heat in the upper jiao; now with diarrhea, the lower jiao becomes deficient, causing upper jiao heat to intensify and harass the liver. Master Mao believes this is caused by food damaging the spleen and stomach. First regulate with Xingpi San (Awaken Spleen Powder) and Yunqi San (Regulate Qi Powder). After one day, use Tiaozhong Yin (Regulate the Middle Infusion) (all three formulas suitable for refusal to nurse), combined with Jia Ruxiang San (Frankincense-Enhanced Powder for diarrhea) and Longxian Gao (Dragon Saliva Paste for thirst) for regulation until recovery. *Qianjin Fang* suggests crushing fresh winter melon juice and drinking it alone.
