Children aged one to ten years old should not wear cotton padding made of new silk floss, nor should their clothes and bedding be dried over fire in winter. They should not eat fruits such as peaches, apricots, or waxberries, nor should they consume roasted, fried, or hot-natured wheat flour foods, as these will cause the child's body to become hot. There are cases where eating meat too soon after a Shanghan (Cold Damage) illness causes the child's body to become hot, or even develops into Guzheng (Bone-steaming fever, a chronic condition characterized by yin deficiency and internal heat). It is appropriate to treat with Shengxi San (Raw Rhinoceros Horn Powder), Ke Xiao Tang (Effectiveness Decoction), Digupi Yin (Cortex Lycii Decoction), Qi Bao San (Seven Treasures Powder), and Jinlian Yinzi (Golden Lotus Drink).
[Zeng's perspective] Guzheng fever presents with a weak and emaciated body, onset in the evening, fever without chills, and cessation only after waking up with thirst and sweating. This is the residual toxin of Gan disease (Infantile malnutrition syndrome) transmitting into Guzheng. There may also be Pi masses (abdominal masses) inside the abdomen with occasional mild pain. Use Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) or San Leng Jian (Curcuma Decoction with Ginger and Jujube) mixed with decoction for administration. Alternatively, use Hua Pi Wan (Mass Dissolving Pill) first to treat Spleen deficiency with retained stagnation, followed by treatment with Chai Hu Yin (Bupleurum Decoction). Still, avoid toxic foods such as chicken, alcohol, mutton, and noodles.
Renshen Shengxi San: Treats pediatric Guzheng with muscle emaciation, red cheeks, dry mouth, tidal fever at dusk (Ribu Chaore), night sweats, vexation and irritability in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), and limb fatigue. It also treats residual toxins remaining after recovery from severe illnesses, or body heat and loss of appetite after eating mutton following a Shanghan illness.
