Chao Yuanfang stated: Children have weak *shenqi* (Spirit and Qi), with slight depletion of their spirit and blood-qi, causing their soul to be possessed by evil spirits. The manifestation is that they do not feel other obvious illnesses, but simply present with sallow complexion (withered yellow), frequent loud crying, and a constant foul odor in the mouth. The song "Ghost Possession in Infants" from *Yingtong Baojian* states: "Children with weak qi and declining fate often have their souls possessed by ghosts; their signs are sallow complexion and much weeping on the ground; no need for medicine, seek a master instead." The song on Ghost Qi states: "Ghost Qi resides in the skin, transmitting between organs; edema and emptiness resemble water disease, spasms resemble convulsions; fever makes the whole body dry and stiff, heart and abdomen cramp and pain gather; children also suffer this, medication requires urgent caution."
The *Tujing* prescription for treating ghost possession: Use tiger eyes, claws, and finger bone hairs tied to the child's arm to ward off evil ghosts.
The *Wai Tai Mi Yao · Shen Shi Fang* Wu Xie Wan (Five Evils Pill): Treats evil madness, ghostly bewitchment, delirious speech, frantic running, confusion, and failure to recognize people. This is considered an attack by ghost qi, and the Sha Gui Wan (Ghost-Killing Pill) formula should be used.
Ingredients: Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Realgar (Xiong Huang) [each separately ground], Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Ma Mu Du Gong [a mineral drug], Aralia elata branch (Gui Jian), Akebia fruit (Gui Jiu) [each 5 liang], Adzuki bean (Chi Xiao Dou) [3 liang], Mylabris (Yan Qing) [1 piece], Peach kernel (Tao Ren) [100 pieces, peeled, tips removed, roasted, separately ground].
The above nine ingredients are pounded, sifted, mixed through fine silk gauze, blended evenly, then combined with wax to form pills the size of a bullet, stored in a crimson pouch, and tied to the arm—left side for males, right side for females, and on the head for infants. During preparation, ensure no women or dogs/chickens see it. For administration, mix with honey to form pills the size of a wu-tzu seed. Take three pills per dose, three times daily. Avoid five pungent vegetables and raw blood products.
Chao Yuanfang stated: The character "Zhu" (疰) means to stay or remain, referring to wind pathogens and ghost qi remaining inside the human body. Regardless of age, if blood and qi are deficient and declining, yin and yang lose their control, allowing wind pathogens and ghost qi to invade as guests. They lodge between muscles and linger within viscera. Symptoms may include skin twitching and wandering unpredictably, stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, or body heat and skin swelling. The condition becomes stagnant leading to death, and after death, it transmits to others, hence named "Zhu". Children cannot withstand wind pathogens; illness often arises because the nursing mother, during postpartum recovery, fails to avoid temperature changes, summer heat, or dampness, or due to carrying the child out early and late, causing the child's spirit and soul to be weak and injured by ghost qi.
Qian Jin Fang prescription for treating infant Zhu disease: Mix equal parts of ash from the stove hearth and salt, heat, and apply as a hot compress (moxibustion-like application).
Qian Jin Fang Tai Yi Bei Ji San (Supreme Great Emergency Powder): Mainly treats sudden onset of evil qi invasion, five corpses entering the abdomen, ghost stabs, ghost paralysis, as well as poisoning from Gu and Zhu, hematemesis, hematochezia, sudden heart/abdominal pain and fullness, and cold damage yin-toxin disease after six or seven days.
Ingredients: Realgar (Xiong Huang), Genkwa flower (Yuan Hua), Cinnamon twig (Gui Xin) [each 2 liang], Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Sichuan pepper (Shu Jiao) [each 1 liang], Veratrum (Li Lu), Croton seed (Ba Dou) [each 1 fen], Prepared Aconite root (Fu Zi, roasted, peeled, navel removed) [5 fen], Wild ginger (Ye Ge) [3 fen].
The above nine ingredients: Process Ba Dou separately into a paste/lipid state. Combine the rest, pound, and sift. Mix with the Ba Dou lipid, pound again until uniform, and store tightly in a copper vessel to prevent leakage. In emergencies, administer with water using a measure of "one zi bi" (approx. 0.3-0.6g),可增加至 "half qian bi" (approx. 1.5-3g); reduce dosage for elderly and young. Pain in the head causes epistaxis; pain above the diaphragm causes vomiting; pain below the diaphragm causes diarrhea; pain in limbs causes sweating. This action is like pouring boiling water on snow, effective immediately. Keep secret; do not transmit to the unvirtuous.
Qian Jin Fang prescription for treating contagious Zhu disease, as well as Huoluan (cholera-like disorder) with evil qi invasion, and chronic Ke Wu (fright) in children:
Ingredients: Otter liver (1 piece), Realgar (Xiong Huang), Polystichum setiferum (Mang Cao), Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Akebia fruit (Gui Jiu), Rhinoceros horn (Xi Jiao), Croton seed (Ba Dou) [each 1 liang], Musk (She Xiang) [2 fen], Rhubarb (Da Huang), Bovine calculus (Niu Huang) [each 1 liang], Centipede (Wu Gong) [1 piece].
The above eleven ingredients are powdered and made into honey pills. Take two pills the size of hemp seeds on an empty stomach, increasing to three pills as needed, stopping when the desired effect is achieved.
